How crappy is an asian copy ETA movement?

Asian auto's are good movements,

Edit: as Pugwash pointed out in a previous post, the movements supplied are most likely not ETA, instead are asian copies of a ETA and if this is the case than asian movements have been proven reliable by the proliferation of the copied ETA's we all own.

If you want a Genuine ETA I suggest you buy a movement from a reliable watch part supplier IE Otto Frei.

I bought the "beginmariner" from Josh which has the asian ETA in it and to tell you the truth, it runs like a charm. Had my local jeweler friend crack it open and it looks real good inside, he said its well put together. We've been buying these reps for years and this movement could be a winner.

Asian ETA

I'll tell you this,I was strictly a Swiss Eta buyer If it wasn't Swiss I wouldn't even look at it. Used to be if it was Asian powered the quality of the case and band seem to reflect that. Not anymore though. I have bought a few reps with Asian movements from Wacko (Stan) and the overall quality is outstanding. They also seem to be as accurate as my best swiss powered reps. As far as longevity we will see.

I famously have no fear of Asian movements, but if a movement ever breaks down, I have to write the watch off as you simply can't get spares for them. If you need to repair a watch, you'd better hope it's an ETA.

Yes, but it's not an ETA movement.

I have always wondered about the authenticiy of the ETA's and now this price drop confirms that only a select few of the supplied movements are ETA's IE the swiss chronograph's.

I think the fear of asian movements is the lack quality control when assembling the movement, debries left in the movement ETC.

Once serviced properly any movement should be reliable.

...I'm glad that he is doing a review. That will be interesting. I have heard that the Asian's are harder to get serviced. I can understand why getting parts might be difficult, but would'nt disassembling and oiling be the same, whether ETA or the copied movement?

...also I've been told that ETA has a factory in Asia, is this true or false. And if they do then would'nt the movements assembled there be considered ETA, or Asian ETA?.....Please if someone can clarify this for me, my mind is really getting twisted on this... :?

As far as the asian 21 jewel movements they are available new at Otto Frei for under $20.00.

To my knowledge for a movemnt to be considered swiss it has to be 51% swiss parts and assembled in Switzerland.

as far as repairs go,I found old korean guy who is a wiz at fixing any movements. He'll swap parts from his "junk pile" to get them to work. He took a dead asian Pam Regatta from me and made a manual wind and it runs better than ever before!!

All the reps touted as ETA movements (apart from a very select few from years ago) had ETA movements. This is the first time in recent history that dealers have tried to mislead us over ETAness. These Asian ETA copies don't have ETA stamps on them so they're easy to spot.

...well I have had to check the movements in my watches.

The movement below is stamped ETA 2824-2 and has all ETA markings on it... It is goldplated, and I've been told that gold plated movements are from Asia. So I guess I can assume from this that :

1. It is either an Asian copy of the ETA 2824-2

or

2. It is a genuine ETA 2824-2 movement

or

3. Some parts of it are genuine and some are not.

Swapping the movements is a very simple process, swapping from asian 21 jewel to Eta 2824-2 for instance would also require a different dial also. I have swapped out a few in my own watches, IE my Breitling Seawolf has Gen. ETA 2824 from O. Frei. I will Probably do the same with my incoming PO.

As some others have pointed out why couldn't they just as easily reproduce the ETA stamp's. How do we know for a fact that any of the currently offered movement are indeed ETA.

For that matter are the Hybrids with a ETA baseplates relly Swiss since they where not assmbled by swiss technicians.
Yet they still have the ETA stamp.

A genuine ETA movement is already cleaned, oiled and lubed properly are they not?

@ Cybee, A movement being gold in color doesn't signify it being an Asian copy.
