It all depends. I've gone from having 3 PAMs, to none at all, then now if you see my other thread, 6 and all different and each very unique in its own way. PAMs have an allure for me.

Yet, I also have a gen Moonie which I wear very often and a BK/WM0 Sub v3 on the way which will also get a lot of wrist time. I love the PAMs for their straps and the ability to change up my outfit.

You love'em or don't, they are here to stay for sometime to come. Diversity at the end of the day makes life more interesting :)

So how long does it take before I will "get it" about Paneri? Right now, that crown guard thingy just looks strange to me and completely unnecessary. I've only been at this since Sept. 2009, so maybe I need to give it a few more months.

Maybe a crossover Panerai/Rolex might interest you?

Well, to be technical, all vintage Panerai's are originally manufactured by Rolex, just that Panerai slapped on their name on the dial and later created and patented the technology of the sandwich radium lumed dials. So yes, loving vintage Panerai means you love Rolex :D

These days though, Panerai is a completely different beast from Rolex, and even the vintage pieces. Part of the reason why I don't have a single contemporary Panerai in my collection and don't plan to, I still love the classic vintage pieces.

I'd never heard of Panerai 'till I found this forum. My first rep: a DSN 112. I love the simplicity and the aesthetics of them--including the crown guard. I now have 4, though two are frankens I've made by combining bits. I completely agree with the person who recommended getting a $125 'Mini Fiddy' to get the taste (though I had to do a major job on the CG). I also agree with Seanf that the originals are grossly overpriced. The reason being that they use the same old ETA as everyone else. Thus most of the genuine watches out there are overpriced, if you ask me. If I were to buy a genuine, it would have to be one where the movement is 'in house'. A Jaeger le Coultre or something.

i think the appeal of the panerai lies in the old world charm it has, it looks like a rock solid watch that could double up as a weapon of sorts, got this totally manly feel to it .... personally i wouldn't plonk the money for a gen for the reason it uses a really inexpensive movement on really cheap 316 steel, the vendome group is just really milking it to the last drop

Yeah I have to say it took me a while before I decided to order one, but now I really like them. They are a Man's watch without a doubt, what I mean by that is you can't have girly wrists and get away with wearing a PAM, unlike the way you can with a Rolex. They are not popular so it's makes them even more unique to me. Breitlings use to be my favorites, but now its PAM and Omega's.

Hong Kong is Pam crazy, cant believe I didnt notice them before finding this site.
Only the Italians can make things that are poorly enginered(comparatively speaking) and convince poeple that the product is superior.
Im hooked, about the only gen i would drop the cash on. Oh, like Vintage Tags the value has exploded in the last few years. The average price of existing pieces have gone up 20% a year. At least that what my PAM crazy mate tells me. Can one of our resident guru's confirm or debunk this??

some good repartee in this thread.
i too was completely oblivious of Pams before joining this forum and had a hard time seeing the appeal of the huge simplistic dials. i really like the bezel design of the watches i have and the traditional Pams just have a thin metal ring. when i looked at the Submersible designs that have a more substantial bezel with some details i definitely saw the appeal. just got a Pam 186 Arktos GMT for xmas and i can't get the thing off my wrist.
i'll be adding to my collection thread soon once i get some decent pics happening.

You speak as a man with experience. ;)

Let's just say if my two choices were: (a) wear a Luminor for the rest of my life; or (b) have sex with a transsexual Mexican midget prostitute named Juanita, then I'd be saying "Ole!!!"
