Going gen Panerai, is it worth it?

I did Gen on 562. Ordered my first 564 rep to see how it goes.

IMO I'd get a gen 086 or 089 which have anthracite dials and are stunningly beautiful ! The reps are really far from good on these two.

The Anthracite Gen dials are about a million times better than the rep dials. Lots of great reasons to buy a gen Pam. View attachment 100068

I'd choose a gen if I was going for a precious metal case, a uniquely finished dial, working PR on the face, in-house movement. For now I'd go gen on a 233.

I don't see the point in getting a gen of a Panerai. A 5712 I understand. I would buy a gen if I want to give it to someone down the line or if it'll go up in value or if there isn't a good rep. But you do you

If PAM can't always authenticate their own watch there is no reason to go gen.
Movements are decorated ETA. (Except that time they did the Brooklyn Bridge and did nothing)
They are a fashion watch brand Ala Hublot more than a real watch brand to me.
There is history sure but it means nothing now.

From price/quality point of view, there is no reason to buy a genuine Pam, other than those special models where reps fail. But it is all down to you, if you want to have a gen, buy one. I bought a genuine IWC 5009-01 even though the rep is very good. But the decision was not made by comparing flaws of the rep to genuine.

Totally agree and that’s why I got two gen Pams in precious metal and highly sought after special edition. If you find them second handed in pristine condition, there is no reason not to go gen. First owner take the financial hit.
Believe me, gen is gen. You can still notice the difference right away in your hands. Usually cg lever shape and imprint are the biggest tell for Luminor models. Several Panerai model reps are so well made and those on someone else’s wrist is different story though.

The crystal on the Gen 422 commands respect- from across a room you can still read it clear as day- and it gleams with quality- even outside a boutique. I say go for it- or get a Gen Pam with the 8 Day movement.
Maybe order the 422 rep and try out if you can wear a 47mm as a daily before committing to the Gen. I find that every 3/4 days I rotate from 36mm to 44mm. With winter here I migrate towards smaller, under the cuff sizes. And my height/wrist size, 47mm would be just silly for me for daily wear. 40-42mm seems to be the sweet spot for me as far as gen-everyday wear is concerned. (47mm would be just a fun watch to wear on an evening out- but not get the daily wear attention the price warrants.)

I'll throw in a new little bit. I've had a gen PAM104 for over 15 years. It was my first large purchase with my first large bonus! I don't remember exactly how much I paid... but it was retail and in the $7k range (young and money burning a hole in my pocket). Since the popularity has grown, I just checked a Black Friday sale at watchmaxx and you could pick one up at $5200!!

I wouldn't buy gen now for the fact that the brand has somewhat been diluted and I don't think the large volume models will gain value so I'd go rep and buy more!

I feel like Panerai used to be for watch guys "in the know"... now I think anyone that wants to spend $7-9k on a watch has many Rolex alternatives. In my 20s... seemed like everybody and their brother had a black and SS submariner in my industry.... thus PAM104 for me.

If you have your heart set on a 422, look at a 423 -- it has the power reserve function on the dial and is essentially the same watch albeit harder to rep. Plus the price difference is negligible ...

I'm not knowledgeable on Pam reps. But I guess rep on left cuz the hand colors differ from numbers.

If you’re going for gen, get the one with anthracite dial.. The reps can’t replicate the sunburst effect good enough in my opinion..
