Getting a dog......suggestions?

Here's my German Sheperd puppy, I say German Sheperd!

Look at those ears! I love how they have to grow into them....mine was like that too way back when, all ears and paws:

Now she's all grown up but still a big baby:

Huskies are great with kids and give them a lot of fun/workouts too, since they're so active. The come to regard the humans immediately around them as their "pack" and become very watchful/protective of the young ones. They are a bit of a handful though when it comes to training...

Walks on rainy night, shit in the garden, dog hair in your Corn Flakes and in the car. Tripping over dog feeding bowls, muddy paw prints all over the house. :thumbsup:

Tell them they can have any pet they want provided it goes in a tank or cage.

I have your current front runner!

He's a male Lab called Ben - he just turned 4 years old. He's pretty well behaved and is just brilliant with our youngest son (who's now 7 but was obviously only 3 when we got Ben at first). They play together outside and although Ben can get a bit boisterous he is always more gentle with my son than with me when I'm playing with him - it's amazing but he just knows.

The only thing is he goes crazy when he sees a cat, squirrel, fox or deer - all of which we see at least one of daily! :facepalm:

(In the second pic, he was returning at speed after a fruitless deer chase!)

Anyway, here he is...

Well the ball is well and truly rolling. We're going to view a Black Lab puppy tomorrow evening. I'm so excited....like being a kid again!

I get to see both parents. £50 deposit secures him and he'll be ready for his new home mid December. Are there any important questions I need to ask?

Here's Jake. Our two year old has used him as a pony, punching bag, step stool, and pillow. Jake's been nothing but gentle with him since he was a baby. He's an awesome family dog. I can't recommend a golden enough!

Labs are great. My family includes a golden lab and two black labs (sons of the Golen bitch) among three mor street dogs.

Labs and border collies are smart, but street born dogs with no specific breed are even smarter IMHO.

Anyway, for me (and my wife agrees) the labs, specially the black ones, are perfect. We have a 1yo boy and the dogs are great with him.

I was going to get a stafordshire bull terrier. They look like pit bulls but are nothing like them. They were bred to be exatly the opposite of a pit fighter. Their breed standard states they must be friendly with children. *It has been said that "No breed is more loving with its family"

I'd read the ACC article on them too.

I ended up getting a pappilon cross. He is great. Doesn't bark, he's hypoalergentic, and he's smarter than a whip, but he's tiny. *

Dont do it!! Slobbering shedding shredding their-ass-to-your-face-licking flea toting beasts! Your going to be the one to walk them in the rain, the reason you can't go out of town or stay out later than 7pm (walks!) the reason you cant set motion detectors in your house, they snore and slobber on everything you own! They cost an arm and a leg, and they die and break your heart!

they're cute, but do you want to LIVE with one? Alright then.. Just don't ask me to take care of the beast when you want to go out of town- the answer is no!

Lab are a great choice, my 12 years old buddy went away this august but my head is full of the best souvenir. He was 4 when we had our first daughter and 6 when we had the second.

But before the summer came I went to order a new baby, I didn't wanted to get another lab as my vet told me that in taking the same specie, we try to find the same behavior and dogs are like humans, they're all different, so we might end up deceived.
Our lab, Praslin, was big, 61cm and 50kgs, that was taking a lot of space on our bed, in the car, etc..., and a lot of sh!t in the garden. So we wanted to go smaller and Gustave arrived in July, just to bad the 2 dogs stayed together only a little over 3 weeks.

There are countless dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted. The majority of them are the most loyal, lovable and misunderstood breed, the Pit Bull. Give them a try, you will be amazed and instantly will be a fan. I have rescued 5 pits, Sweet Pea is my latest (look to the left ) Whichever breed you choose, pay a visit to the local shelter. Best of luck

Well gals-n-fellas, I thought I would add my .02c in here - we got a rescued Greyhound a few years ago and he has added so much to our lives it's crazy - and just to dispel any myths, there is barely a Greyhound on the planet that bites. Ours is so gentle he as confronted by a rotweiller when we first got him and he just stood there .... no reaction ... not fear, just no reaction ... the rotty ended up just wandering off (which we were very grateful for!)

He is fast of course but more importantly, children and toddlers are all over him without even a hint of aggression whatsoever. he has ZERO interest in other dogs, cats, rabbits, chicken, birds or anything else other than being a BIG couch potato and getting cuddles from mum and dad - he loves his walks every day and to add to the myth-dispellings, does NOT need constant walking/exercise. They are sprinters (and how!!) not marathon runners. But I admit, it is near-impossible to not walk him daily because he loves it so much.

He's a good mate and a great addition to our household. We babysit other's dogs and there is never a problem - he is so deferential that he lets our two cats (also rescues and came to the household much later) eat from his bowl while he is!
