Getting a dog......suggestions?

Golden was our first choice. My parents have one and the kids consider him theirs too. That's why, at the moment, we're going for black. They don't want the same.

Ok - so the one behind is the original and the one in front is the replica - not a 1:1 but still a very nice job .... colour's a bit off though

Hehe yeah, I'd look just the little dickins with him in my truck. I think perhaps I should throw away my jeans and replace them with a nice tight pair of cycling shorts with a matching pink singlet and leather cap. Then I could skip from tank to tank when I'm fueling.
Here's Jack........he's an Australian Shepherd X, we got him from the Humaine Society........dogs rescued from shelters always appreciate what you've done for them by giving them a loving home.
This was back when I was on the road for about a month at a time, the lawns tend to grow a tad in that time........and check out the crystal clear photography skills (Jack's the one on the right).

Sorry I missed this thread. I would like to comment as a veterinarian if I may.
If the "purebred" thing is not important to you, then may I suggest a mixed breed dog that closely resembles the type of dog you would like (I am guessing that is black lab). Few reasons for this:
1. hybrid vigor - mixed breed dogs tend to have less genetic problems than purebreds (eg. hip dysplasia is a problem in Labs)
2. Less expensive to purchase (even free)
3. Your local shelter will be able to show you several examples that you can interact with before deciding. Believe it or not, that can be important.
Whatever route you go, ensure your family knows and understands the huge responsibility it is to properly look after a dog. Too often the shine wears off after a length of time and the dog gets neglected to a certain degree. That being said, a dog can become and integral and important part of any family and can teach your kids lots about sharing and responsibility.
