You don't source actual gen Pam movements, but gen Unitas/ETA 6497. These can be found here and there on Ebay or watch parts suppliers.

It may be worth it with close caseback models but it can be a "deco" problem with clear casebacks.

I’m looking to do a custom build of a hand-wound PAM 210 with a famous builder — from Ukraine :) — and am considering having it made with a closed caseback (gen 210 is clear).

Given this scenario of a closed caseback franken, would it change your perspective about using a gen Unitas/ETA 6497? I’d be ok with spending the extra money, if it is worth it from a reliability / repairability perspective. But, I don’t want to waste extra money just so I can say that “this has a gen 6497 movement.”

Thanks.

I'm sure everyone has different experiences, but in my opinion, a good movement is one that has been serviced and correctly assembled in a case. There are exceptions to everything, but just as you can buy a bad ETA rebuilt from parts, or just a tired one, you can also accidentally get a wonderful ST that will serve for many years, with proper care. Of course, all things being equal, a factory new ETA is better, but in my opinion, this is negated by an incorrect appearance, in the case of a transparent CB, and a low frequency, in the case of a second hand.
In the case of the 210, I would leave the decorated Chinese one. Or I would go with the PAM380, if I have a Swiss one, in which I am confident, despite the frequency.

Super great info and perspective, thank you!

Based on this, now I’m thinking maybe I just call it a fantasy build franken: on top a 210 sandwich dial without sub seconds and on the bottom a closed 380 CB with a reliable, serviced unfinished movement.

and for the .0001% chance a Paneristi calls me out , I’ll just say i got a 380 and modded it with a 210 dial. Which, now that I think about it, is pretty much what I’d be doing here.

If a sandwich is important to you, then you can choose PAM380, PAM292, for example. They are also not very common, but at one time quite a few of them were sold, there is a chance to find them.

And do you choose 210 based on the absence of a second hand, purely stylistically, or because you have a certain caseset for it?

I am choosing the PAM 210 based on style, yes. I have a PAM 111 Noob (Luminor/Sandwich/sub seconds) and want these as a matching/complimentary minimalist Panerai set. :) I know that a PAM 112 would probably match better, but I just like the complete minimalism of the 210 for the Radiomor case.

And, remember, I'm working on a this as custom build and I'm not sure if I can source a replica decorated movement. If I CAN get one, I'll probably do it.

But, if I can't I'm thinking to settle for a closed CB like the 380 but keep the 210 dial. And, in doing so, If I understand correctly, I'' likely get a more reliable / easy to sources parts for watch. Does that make sense?

Another suggestion is to custom make a 210 dial and swap out with a rep PAM 183. It is much easier to source a rep 183.
