Maybe I asked it wrong but now knowing what you know do you think that most Rolex Watches you see are Replicas now.

Dunno'. I think the newer reps have the correct tone, marker color, etc;. Like BMW and Thinkbachs suggest, most people don't know or care. Bigdeal also makes a point; if it has "a name" that's all they need to know. Hell, for some, that's all they care about.

Profile the person (always fun!). If they are wearing Armani, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana... Tailored, fit and presumably capable of leaving a contrail of money behind them, then they might very well be wearing the gen. Or they are that pompous ass we mentioned at the beginning of this thread.

If the person looks as if they buy clothes at Target or Walmart, we could assume they are wearing a rep. Or they might just be Warren Buffett...

BMW,

Yes... and no. All the things listed in his Noobfactory DSSD post are pretty much what he does for that price. He does grease the seals but he suggests you have the watch pressure tested afterwards. Pearl mod is another $30.

However, the watch is still what it is, a replica watch mass produced in a particular "factory" in China. All the inconsistencies found in that specific product remain aside from BK's enhancements. Your still going to find dings and scratches; stuff you will have to fix on your own. If he strove to make true 1:1 watches, he couldn't keep any to sell and/or he would charge considerably more for all the work that would entail. For what he actually does, his watches are excellent and a real value.

You also have to consider that all the accolades and renown drive up the expectation for new people like you and me. when you step up to this level of rep you might find it more difficult to accept the "reality". All this is from my personal experience and, thankfully, BK is very easy to work with. I hope I have learned my "noob" lesson.

Have you ever tried spotting tells on the wrist, its incredibly difficult and most people don't know the tell for every watch made.

Its hilarious when a post gets put on the gen forums of a new "fake" for sale and the first 6-10 posts are people saying its a scam the seller is using pics of a gen.

A few years ago when the Big Bangs came out even the CEO of Hublot (JC Biver) said the rep was actually a picture of a genuine being used to try to sell poor quality fakes and that you wouldnt get the watch depicted.

I was searching on a Gen site today to see what they were saying about the release of the DSSD and I found a post from June 10. A member asked why he could not find the serial number on his DSSD. Another member asked him if the Release Valve wording was etched or not and he said etched. The guy asking the question knew what he was talking about, the tread ended up ending and know one told the guy he bought a Replica. A top end Replica I bet would fool 60% of Gen owners.

its a real shame when people sell people a fake when they pretend its genuine - no different to stealing

if people know they are buying a rep, theres no real problem

we are just humble hobby addicts!

I think you're are being very Generous to the other 40%. I know a lot of guys with gen watches, and most I've encountered don't even know what model rolex they have, let alone what the tiny "tells" are on a quality fake. example: I was talking to a guy at work who has a gen sub about watches, showing him mine, etc... He wasn't wearing it at the time, and I'd forgotten what his rolex looked like. I asked him what model he had. He replied "mine is an oyster perpetual".

Not intended to be a dig at gen owners at all, but owning one does not mean you are interested in watches, or consider them a "hobby". Most I've met really don't care, just looked in the display case at the jeweler, Picked the one they liked and were done with it. I'd be willing to bet that none I've ever met even spent 10 minutes reading a watch forum, let alone a rep watch forum...

I own a gen meteorite I bought after watching "Meteorite Men" on the discovery channel. I could certainly never tell it from a fake. I just don't care enough to spent the time to learn how...

Disclaimer-of course there are gen watch enthusiasts out there, I'm not talking about them, and I bet they account for a very small percentage of the gen wearing public...

I'd put it at around 90%.

How can you tell if a watch is fake ? You can't. But when I see someone dressed like crap, the watch is not sized, but sliding all over their arm and they are driving a Chevette, it's probably a fake. It's a total package. Most people with nice watches have an all around high end taste in clothing, shoes , cars etc. That's just the reality of life.

There's a truly guy wealthy guy around where I live who wears football jerseys or singlets and thongs (you call them flip flops or slippers probably). He also wears a seiko and drives a beaten up toyota hilux from the early 90's. You wouldn't pick this for obscenely rich if saw him at the local shops.

Appearances are not always an accurate tell.

(for any QLD'rs reading I'm referring to one of the heirs to the Raptis fortune)

When I was in college I had this guy walk into my high end fitness equipment store because he wanted to buy his daughter a treadmill because she started track. He had on work boots with concrete on them and jeans, he bought about $20,000 dollars worth of equipment. Like you said you cannot tell a book by its cover.

interesting thread.
I think that the biggest tell of all replicas is the owner. I mean, it all depends about who are you and what people know about you. If you have a 1,500$ salary most of people that know about that will obviously suspect that you have a rep instead of a 8.000$ watch; same the opposite, if you have a more solid financial income even a cheaper replica on your wrist will fool most of the people.......
Of course people don't need to know how much your salary is to have an idea about your financial situation (car, house, clothes, lifestyle......)

@ johnnydeepsea - i think you should get yourself a ploprof (v2 of course).

From browsing the forums it seems the the peeps who like DSSDs generally speaking also go for ploprofs. The difference is the ploprof is very VERY accurate. I rate the v2 as hands down my most accurate rep.

Not to put anyone down but I saw a thread were they ask what other reps you would own and every one said nothing else no clothes no fake chains nothing. But wearing a Replica watch does not phase them. I personally was not always able to buy a Gen Rolex so I saved up to buy Gen Tag Heuer watches I never thought about wearing a Replica and did not know they were so good now. I don't know but it would bum me wearing a Replica. I personally would buy the cheaper Tag.

So I am wondering why are people so against fake clothes but not watches. I do not mean to call people out I would really like to know.

There are several threads on here about people buying rep clothing, shoes, wallets, and pens. I don't think many people have an aversion to buying other types of reps.

I agree I think most DSSD owners researched their watch. But I think they would have them next to each other unless they have been here

Though I doubt the person behind you in line at the grocery store, at the next table in the restaurant, or at the bar next to you really know that much about your background... In the end who cares anyway...

Thats what makes markets. Rather than bum me, I quite like the feeling of wearing a replica...

If I was "in to" clothes, and the replicas were of similar quality to the replica watches we discuss here, I'd be all over them!! But since I'm not, I get most of my clothes at Sam's Club(or Target if I'm feeling adventurous lol)

I agree I think most DSSD owners researched their watch. But I think they would have them next to each other unless they have been here

Obviously you researched yours, and continue to even after purchase, but, and I'm really just asking here, do you really think that "most" did? I wouldn't have thought so. I think enthusiast forums like this one really make it seem like most people care about the topic being discussed, but in reality, very few in the real world actually do....

no-one cares about watches.....( except us :) ) but really add up all the membership of all the gen and rep fora and what do you get? 1-2million? topps? so out of like six billion on the planet and lets just say 2 million watch lovers there is like no chance anyone on the street knows or cares about your watch. but you. so enjoy it.

Guys in my industry make $2k-$8k a week, and we are all in dirty carharts, steel toed boots, and bib overalls. We drive pick-up trucks and old SUVs, We get looked down on by waiters that make, in a month, what some of us make in a couple days, and sales people that just want to get us out of the store, so they can move on to the woman with the big sunglasses, and the big ass coach purse, until they see the black AmEx, or Visa in our wallets. Just reiterating the point "book's cover" point.

I don't buy Rolex (or any other reps) for the name. I buy them for the style (don't really care if no one believes it). I don't tell people outside of the forum "I bought a new Rolex", I say "I got another watch". If someone asks if my watch is real I say "Well, it's a real watch". I don't buy homages, because I found this site first, not an homage site.
