I own gen DDs. Easiest way for me to quickly tell is to look at the coronet on the dial. The reps are all flat. The gens are all 3D and the light hits them in a very different way.
*Of course if they use a gen dial then that changes. Not seen many gen faces on reps.
Excellent catch. A couple of the people I work with have gen DayDates, and I've worn custom-plated GMF reps around them. I've deliberately pushed friendly on-the-wrist comparison and inspection to test the quality of the reps, and they've never had any idea that what I was wearing wasn't gen. Anyhow, just did a comparison with the above in mind and you're 100% correct. If you know to look for that, you can catch it.
Gonna get a gen dial now and see if it'll fit.
