The new 3285 movement is showing all indications of being based on VS and not VR.

Some key identifiers:
The hole in the train bridge for the intermediate wheel is much larger on the VS

The jump click spring must be like the 3186 (and gen 3285) and not the VR's 3185 style. Let's hope it's not as fragile as it looks in that 3285 pic.

VR's unbreakable 3185 jump click, used on all VR GMT movements

VS Datewheel has more pointy teeth, VR's are rounded. VS date jumper is short. VR's is longer. VS has paraflex balance shock absorber. VR has KIF springs. All these VS features are 32xx gen-spec, VR's features are like the 31xx.

These are other indicators but this is enough IMO to conclude this is based on the VS3235. I wonder if they've tagged it with a name yet.

A big advantage to a clone 3285 movement is it should take a gen 3285 dial natively with the friction fit dial underside rims. Interestingly it looks like there are dial feet holes at ~55 and ~25 minutes so maybe you could use an earlier model dial with feet reglued to those locations. You can see what looks like the foot screw hole on the movement edge at ~25 mins.

The meteorite dial is indeed a disappointment - it needs more darker grey and even blackish tones. Kind of hard to justify an instant plunge purchase.

VR was quick about making an oversize date plate for the DJ41. Can we expect one for the EXP42? I don't see why not.
Awesome analysis as always KJ… there are two reasons I think this is based on the VR and not the VS despite your compelling argument:

1) my WeChat guy says that this movement is made by Shanghai movement factory, not Dandong. Furthermore, he says that Dandong (who makes the VS3235) is working on a clone 3285 clone.

2) the paraflex shock setting on the balance bridge looks exactly like the paraflex decoration plate we have on VR3235s. Also, this movement has the same fake hairspring stud that we see on the vr3235 (and newer vr 31xx GMT movements) whereas the VS style is to have a real paraflex shock setting and no fake decorative hairspring stud.

But I have to admit your point about the intermediate wheel size through the train bridge is compelling.

Regardless, a new clone movement is a good problem to have.

Wow! No more shakey hands when adjusting the hour hands anymore! That itself is worth the upgrade! Can't wait til they release this in a standard Pepsi and Batman/Batgirl dial. Guessing the older Clean/C+ dials won't fit into this due to different movement??

You could be right bro. There are a couple other indicators lending credibility to your position. The datewheel anchor latches (two!) are like the VR, not the VS. And the VS doesn't have dial feet holes while the VR does.

It would be a good thing to see two new 3285 clones, competition always makes for better products. It would also be good to see VR moving closer to gen-spec in the ways this movement shows it.

So, the new movement means we might eventually see a NWBIG Explorer 2 from Clean, right? Right? 👀

It would require an additional version of the vr3285 movement with a larger date wheel... but since there's a vr3235 with a large and small date disk for the sub and DJ41, it stands to reason that we might see the same large and small date wheel versions of the vr3285.

This would be amazing, I'm about to order a V3 Panda and a proper Explorer II rep is on my shortlist for my next watch.

Yeah a good explorer II rep with a good dial (for polar having the dial and markers be white not grey like every current rep) would be an instant buy for me.

110%. That's the exact model I'm eyeing.
I've also noticed that I seem to gravitate towards white dials. :ROFLMAO: I want the polar dial Explorer II, I'm about to purchase a CF Daytona Panda, and I have the V7F IWC Portofino 150 years with the white dial and blue hands.
My other rep is a Fifty Fathoms, so the exception to the rule I guess.
