[AWARDED] IWC 7 Days Portuguese 5001 & 5007 Review and Comparison

History of the REP IWC Portuguese 7 Days 5001:

In 2008 the REP Maker came out with the first generation of IWC Portuguese 7 Days (Ref: 5001). This version was not even close to the GEN 5001 as the Sub-dial spacing was too close, sunken date, the No: 4, Movements plate, prints, etc etc etc. After 7 years of waiting, in AUG 2015 ZF and YL join forces to research and developed a new movement which elevates the REP IWC 5001 to another level. They bought GEN and spent many months doing research to make the best IWC 5001 and finally they've succeeded. This blows a lot of people mind on how possible this 7 days movement can be replicated because this movement was built in-house by IWC and have taken watchmaker many years of research and study. Here you go, the year 2015 is the year of IWC and not only the 5001 but also other great IWC rep from ZF and YL. By having this movement repped, it opens up lots of opportunities on IWC model such as Annual Calendar (IW5035).

Comparison ZF and YL 5001

This info is gathered from Forums, users and personal findings online. I will update this table from time to time when new information available. Credit to all contributors.

PM me if you have any info to add regarding this specific IWC 5001 Comparison (ZF and YL)

STRAPS DETAILS : - (Credit to GenTLe (RWG))

Many were asking if Curved End strap can be installed in 5001 like in 5007 model. Yes, they can but you will find a big gap when using curved end strap because 5007 have closer lug holes to the case than 5001. (comparison below, straight vs curved strap) You decide which one best suits you!

ZF & YL NEW MOVEMENT DECORATION (27/11/15)
Comparison of the new movement: - (ZF Estimate End of DEC out) YL already out - called V4. ZF new movement deco is closer to Gen. There are differences between the two new plate if you look closely.

YL movement deco

ZF movement deco

YL movement deco

Sorry, this is YL V5!! (Not V4) - same as everyone, can't keep up with YL anymore.

GEN vs ZF V2 Comparison: -
ZF V2 has removed the centre movement (circled in RED) and improve the whole plate to mimic the Gen.

In Red in what improvement in ZF V2.

This bit of plate is very close to GEN includes the marking.

Top movement compare: -
1) Added IWC marking
2) Correct side with markings
3) Fixed escapement wheel beneath the longitudinal structure of the splint screw (still slightly different than Gen but lots of correction been made)
4) Copper plate fixing similar to Gen

Bottom movement compare: -
1) 3 wheels alignment changed, closer to Gen.
2) Marking on the side similar to Gen.
3) Copper bit fixing plate location similar to Gen.

Rotor Difference :

Fonts Details :
There is two version of Gen 7 Days (5001 - Pre 2014 and 5007 - Post-2014) I won't get into the comparison between the two but what I want to point out was the Fonts of these two was different. Therefore I think ZF and YL are more on the 5001 dial/ fonts.

Black Dial Comparison : (Credit to diaby2afc)
Gen dial - more glossy
Rep dial - more matte
subdials: rep is more reflective

Movement Details :

ETA uses a type of ball bearing automatic disc on the gear structure, the gear structure is currently used by the vast majority of the watch, the durability of this structure is very positive, but not very on gear efficiency. Seiko Magic Lever is a hook jaw which cannot be compared. So - On Gen, more than 10 hours to be worn over to get to the full wind, and REP I guess it takes more than 20 hours of normal wear to fully wind. Power Reserve on REP is actual 72 hrs and Gen is 168 hrs. Movement type engraved on GEN is 51011?but on REP is 61016. Gen beat rate is 21600 and REP beat rate is 28800 (Better!!!). Movements research reference based on Panerai P.3000 case, by China made 23J with left sub-dial for Sec and Right for the PR (Power Reserve indicator), polished to the details to mimic 1:1 Gen.

1. LOGO Comparison - The fonts are doing well from the 3D printing. 3D printing font technique makes the print raised. GEN IWC used 3D printing technique.

11. Movements comparison - Many people not keen on new movements and don't know about it. Today this movement has a name and called Dandong c.61016. because it was produced in Dandong. Movements LOGO, deco/plate and stamp of ZF and YL really good, Shock resistant part on ZF looks a bit different. Note the difference of the Barrel of ZF V2 and new YL V5, ZF did not cover Barrel with the plate but YL did. These are the changes YL did until the latest version they called Version 5 (V5).

Update : 17 April 2016

ZF V3 and YL V6 (5007) model comparison

New comparison and still not perfect yet on both factories. Following are the difference highlighted in "GREEN = better" and "RED = worse" compared to the Gen 5007.

DIAL : -
As a summary, ZF dial looks more on 5007 as fonts had changed however the YL still using the 5001 dial with larger fonts. ZF still crooked "1" and YL no crooked.

29093601783_3ffda696a7_z.jpg

MOVEMENTS : -
Movements deco have room for improvements on both factories. In general, I think ZF done it better than YL overall, however, lack of 3D effects on the movement deco and yellow colour plate at the corner of the movement (Gen is white). YL has done a bit better on engraving the IWC stamp and wordings on the deco plate and also looks more 3D (Especially the 2 barrel wheels area) but the middle small wheel is not connecting the two barrel wheel.

SUMMARY : -
You make your own judgments on which one to purchase as I've pointed out the differences. Hope ZF and YL can refine the following that I've pointed out.

Portuguese 5001 / 5007 steps to silence noisy rotor (DIY)

1) Firstly open the case back with friction ball or base back opener
29607178962_d8cb26a0ee_z.jpg

2) you will see there is a tiny metal plate sticked to the middle of the rotor (Red Arrow)

Got the ZF Tudor black bay - loved it but let it go cause i got the Pelagos coming in. Only thing i would advise is to have the lume job done more agressive, etc. longer lasting lume . . .

Three thumbs up for the consolidation of information and presenting it to the forum in this way. Very informative.
I have been following all the threads involving ZF Boss and the new release of IWC 7 Day Portugese.
It is thrilling to have contact with a factory representative (whether ZF Boss works for ZF or is a relative or consultant it doesnt really matter). What truly matters is the exchange of information that can hopefully improve the process of design and minimize flaws on first release of new products. This can be such a useful tool for all of us, and may lead other Factories to designate a representative to interact with the Rep Forums.

But I do have a concern. Having seen many members get very excited and post into the ZF Boss threads, I can see that all the information and comments can lead to confusion for the factories and ZF Boss. Most members had relevant comments and asked good questions. Some members were insulting and critical. To keep lines of communication open, and to avoid insulting or confusing the Factories Representative, would it make more sense to limit the communication to just a few RWI designated representatives that can have direct communication with ZF Boss and any future factory representative that may want to open lines of communication with the Rep Forums.
I am not suggesting that members comments/questions arent valid or appropriate. Most are right on point, but we may be overloading ZF Boss with unnecessary and irrelevant information that he then needs to translate, and we may be shooting ourselves in the foot by not approaching this with a more defined process.
If the few Admin appointed Mods currently translating the ZF Boss threads were allowed by Admin to have have a closed thread where only they can communicate with ZF boss, we may be more successful in getting our collective message across to the factories better than bombarding with random comments or questions as we are doing now.
I further suggest that all members who want to make suggestions, comments or questions about the IWC Portugese have a specific thread to post into. The appointed Mods would review the thread daily, and pick out what they consider to be the most important and pertinent to the topic and overall community, and they would then relay the questions/comments/suggestions in their private thread with ZF Boss. This would organize and streamline the communication. Wouldn't this be to all of our advantage? Once ZF Boss relays answers or comments back to the Mods, the Mods would then post them back into the members thread for all to see....
There could be a member thread regarding the IWC 5007, and another thread for other ZF products for members to ask questions or relay suggestions. The Mods would review these daily, then relay what they deem most important and pertinent back to ZF Boss.
In business I have learned you cannot develop a product with a large committee. It just doesnt work.....a few are appointed to listen to the voice of the masses, then they alone communicate with Product designers and engineering.

I want to compliment ZF Factory for appointing (directly or indirectly) a representative for the Rep Forums. ZF Boss has told us that the factories do watch what is written on the Rep Forums, but we have to agree that with language differences, cultural differences and all the "unique personalities we have here at RWI, is it in our best interest to have someone post "I think it sucks" into a thread where ZF Boss or his superiors could see it? If the community of RWI does think something "sucks" then the Mods appointed to communicate with ZF Boss in the suggested closed thread can relay our comments in a professional and culturally appropriate way so that we keep the attention of the factories, and hopefully have an impact in creating the best possible results.
We need to keep the attention of the factories and hopefully attract other factories to follow the lead of ZF Boss.
Currently Admin has taken great steps by appointing a few Admins to translate and communicate, but it is in an open forum, and I have seen less than relevant comments posted.
We want the voice of the membership heard and carefully communicated to affect the best possible result for us all.
Just my $.02, but hopefully this is just the beginning of a straight line of communication with other factories, and having our collective voice heard resulting in an almost perfect Super Rep Version 1, and not having to wait for a V7 to get it right....
I am not telling Admin what to do or what not to do. I am voicing a concern that we may be drowning ZF Boss with info and exposing a valuable factory rep to potentially insulting and negative comments, and missing an opportunity to make this first Factory Interaction as successful as we all want it to be. This really could be the start of a new Era in collaboration with the factories, so lets make the most of it, and do whats necessary to be sure the voice of the community is heard, but managing the information flow to assure the best outcome for all RWI members.

Thanks thermalboyz for the excellent information in this thread,i was just about to place an order for an IWC,your photo's showing factory discrepancies has made me study things a little harder, things that i probably wouldnt have spotted without your knowledge, thanks for taking the time to enlighten us all, these dicrepancies may only be minor but to make us all aware also makes the factories to think twice about saying that'll do no one will notice, because eagled eyed people like yourself will notice,so these reps can only get even better as time goes on
Cheers

Additional info that might be useful: Some chinese dude dissected the movement. According to him the movement is a combination of 28xx auto winding mechanism, st2555 body and 775x parts.

The movement is manufactured by Dandong factory and supplies 10000 movements exclusively just to YL and ZF factory.
