Ahmmm. Excuse me guys, have a look at this HYT H1 Iceberg. No, I was not one of the 50 energy sector or housing crash profiteer tycoons who lined up to buy this instead of, oh I don't know, an Audi a6 with premium leather package, and all options maxed out, or the Hasselblad H6d-400 with 3 high end lenses, or... you get the idea, my income bracket instills in me the desire for practicality, with an eye for the upper end of fashionable consumption, but still in the practical category. I need to use it, or at least think of some relatively important task it would assist in. The HYT, aside from its notoriety for moving liquid around in a mechanical watch, fails to impress in its capacity to assist in accomplishing an otherwise difficult task. It's a luxury pure and simple. The less practical, the more appealing to the CEO types who are drawn to its Americana Industrialist motif and the "achieve the impossible" self-congratulatory smugness it conveys.
To me it's a unique piece that seems to lack in a category of aristocratic refinement that many other brands are very shy to stray even slightly from, the obvious concern of setting off the snarky pissyness of its usual clientele (Hublot, AP, are in the HYT camp of brave departures from the expected Cartier/Rolex monotony which like NYC Italian restaurants religiously adhere to the "change nothing" ideology). The HYT goes a step further than the Hublot or AP, and sort of claimed the same niche of unsophisticated luxury that a good steakhouse claims in food service -- everything is high priced, with a $200 martini on the menu for the man with the HYT (I would love to see a woman festoon her signature style with one of these, but odds are I won't) and nothing on the menu with a difficult to pronounce name for the monolingual anglophone. This preemptive genius of removing potential traps which could expose limited sophistication and the sycophantic championing of common sense is the HYT signature style, and also the formula for a successful steakhouse in Manhattan. Bold, obvious, irrefutable, confident... Michael Douglas in Wall Street, or please forgive me for this, Donald ( ∫· ı_ı ( |{ ! ı√ (¬ ) Trump! Do you see what I mean? Although now that I am picturing his gold Versace sofa pillows and water glasses, I think that HYT lacks the needed tackiness to win over the Donald.
This watch is not for everyone
