I'm with you on that one; I see zero difference. They can try to justify it all they want, but in the end they are driving a counterfeit cobra. I'm not seeing how we're always made out to be the bad guys.

I have a patient who has spent over £30K renovating a 1957 Speedster that he originally shipped over from The States costing God-knows-how much in parts and labour (I'm guessing the final bill will be £100K+). It's taken him two years and he's still some way from getting it roadworthy.

Clearly it is a labour of love and I respect him for it. But even he says he's fine with people driving £20K replica Speedsters running on Toyota MR2 engines. It's just not for him. No inner hatred. No 'counterfeit' ranting.

For me there isn't a massive distinction between vintage cars and vintage watches. Both the Speedster and Submariner, for instance, are timeless, classic designs. With an original Sub (like a 5513 or 1680) you get the intrinsic value, the history and that warm satisfying feeling you get with a gen. But I defy anyone to wear it as a daily beater, especially a Red 1680 or 1665; just like you wouldn't use a '57 Speedster as a daily commuter wagon.

With a high quality vintage rep you get 'the look', a reliable movement/engine (like the MR2!) and the added bonus of not having to worry about extra dings or scratches. You also get to modify it without worrying about intrinsic value. So the two don't necessarily run contrary to oneanother.

Having said that replication with a view to resale as authentic is just plain wrong and perpetrators should be suitably punished. That's wear the lines get blurred, as much as it must be tempting for people to try...

Buit to DRIVE not show and park & polish. I am a huge fan of the clone, restomod classic car. My grail is a 1967 Corvette Stingray, Cortez Silver/Red leather body on a C4 or C5 chassis and power train. No tuning, no valve lashing,no SHIT but oil changes, get in, turn the key and drive anywhere, any weather....thats my grail. All for about 1/3 the price of the numbers matching original car. No brainer...

I want to DRIVE em, HARD...not collect them.

This is precisely the reason I love my reps. I'll wear them daily and proudly and not worry for one second if it gets a scratch (well, kinda).

I have a few gens, and you know what, they sit in a safe because I'm paranoid!! I get 100x the satisfaction of a good quality rep that gets wrist time than an expensive gen sitting in a box.

They're very edgy and defensive these people aren't they. I wouldn't want to get stuck in a lift with any of them.

I really cant see a competition business taking place.
It's two sides of the same coin.
Watch lovers.
A good number of us in here own loads of gens as well.
And I bet you 10 to 1 a lot of them have reps too, even most of them wouldn't admit it.
Tolerance is always the key.

Exactly jelly

They are lying if they say they never bought a cheap canal street rep, if they had the gen they would buy the rep just for shits and giggles to see how close it is. I own numerous gen tags and a gen omega among other gens I wont stop buying gens nor reps nor watches in general becasue i love watches. It all comes down to watches there a forum about watches and were a forum about watches they discuss movements and prices we discuss movement and prices.
Many of them don't know that many of US are members of GEN forums. I started out on a gen forum. A member for alittle over a year only had 32 posts i already have 150+ here and its only been two months. I spend more time on   ANYWAYS

we have so much in common its a shame that we get "bashed or ... looked down upon by gen owners." we can't even call a rep a rep on there either!

I know that if i found another man wearing a watch I looked to see what he was wearing perhaps something rare which shows an interest in watches and quite possibly stike up a conversation with them. and i know they do the same thing, they check out other mens watches in hopes of striking a conversation about watches

please excuse this post its all over the place

I'd say so, stubborn and unwilling to learn and compromise. Forget about it guys! We have better things to do than attempt to teach the unteachable.

I've given up on Gen forums now. In fact the only watch forum I bother with now is this one. So much less bullshit and pretentiousness here.

The hell with 'em.

If there were really no discussion to be had, then why is this thread 10 pages long?

Has anyone else noticed that this thread is steadily attracting new members who see nothing wrong with fakes? Do we want them romping round sales corner in future? It probably is worth being aware of what's out there, and the point is proved that they are getting steadily more accurate. They will only get more so in future. But we can't turn this forum into a guide on how to spot fakes of 1000s of different models, and it will only attract unwelcome visitors. All in all this is probably a good reason not to discuss them round here in future. That's the policy at another forum I visit, and it works well enough.

Unbelievable:picard:

I'm happy Here in our Fake world feck em:asshat:

Well, as I see even peadophilia has been associated with replica owners by the number n single-gen-owning wannabe in the www.1_gen_each_to_impress_a_girl.sos , let me add this post and then I'll get it over with that nonsense.
I am a friendly, positive talkative guy, I try to be tolerant with fundamentalists and idiots too, but what I really can't stand is an ugly lousy nerd who thinks dividing into instalments the payment for a 2nd hand Rolex (or showing off your replica, same thing) will turn him into a pussy magnet or a Johnny Depp.
Sry, it won't happen.
You might attract a wrecthed self interested girl, but you'll still be the ugly, paying, supporting character for her. You will pay for her dinner and jewels while she longs for somebody else. So don't leave her alone for too long, because a better sexier looking guy with whatever watch, more and better watches than you have, a replica, maybe no watch at all will stare at her the way she likes and have her easily, giving her in 2 hours what you will never be able to give her in a lifetime.
Don't ground your social life on what you have. Normally it doesn't work and you'll be soon out-cooled by somebody who has more, but if it does you will only have replicas of friends and lovers.

-----

Now, many of us in RWI are all but beggars, I know of some wealthy guys in here.

I own quite a few gens, most of them are rare vintage pieces. A few of my friends in here are aware of my collection, altho I normally keep a low profile.
((btw, whoever quoted me, my "some watch" is well beyond $20k, it's approaching $80k with papers atm, 4x wtf :realmad:
sheesh dont go around downgrading my watches ))

Well, I hardly ever felt like joining a gen forum, let alone wannabes one haha.
Now you see why.
I am not talking of 100% of them, only a part, surely the louder ones tho.
"Vasa inania multum strepunt", empty vases sound louder.
What you witness most of the times is angry 1-gen-wannabes trying to find their social self confidence on the basis of a 2nd hand Rolex or Omega bought on 5 years spreading (and possibly a franken, they know crap).
They are the scammers' favourite chickens.
They refuse to learn about replicas and all they do is exchanging "kudos" with one another, pretending to be members of some non existing Executive Club they would never be allowed in.
A whole life spent desperately trying to imitate those jet set guys they will never be alike...

They are replicas of successful people.

Over and out.

No big speech here..........I just like the genuine folk that frequent this fine place.

Where else would you find such great and open people other than a site like this. Such a mixture of personalties, nationalities, etc.

Everything just falls into place in the nicest possible way.

^That sums up my experience with WUS. Pretentious is an understatement. It's not as bad in some of the lower-priced areas though...
