I don't know one watch enthusiast that can't spot a Rolex. I know people who are clueless about watches , and even they know Rolex.

I had people in past who did not have a clue about watches came up to me and ask me if my orient ray was a rolex submeriner? Thats how recognized rolex's "boring" shape and style is.

I was never a huge fan of rolex but like many things, a seed is planted and it grows into full blown obsession. To say rolex is boring is like saying a Ferrari is mundane. I understand, to each his own but the name is known by everyone around the world. And Welder...really?

To the OP. Have you ever tried a Submariner on your wrist? If not yet then you should do yourself a favor. Go to the AD and slap one on and see if you hate it.

I have a Gen Sub that is now 12 years old. I would NEVER sell it. Ever ever.

It's my favorite watch. It feels so comfy and smooth on my wrist and is classy and understated at the same time.

Timeless elegance.

It seems the OP needs some years on his belt and become more wise.

You will understand one day little one.

When I first really took an interest in watches, I felt the same way largely, like a Rolex was a cliche you could wear on your wrist. But I think they've grown on me a bit, some of the Dayotonas are gorgeous and I wouldn't say no to a good Datejust/Daydate either.

But all that being said, the vast majority of Subs/DSSDs can actually induce bouts of uncontrollable narcolepsy when I look at them for too long. Just not my cup of tea, no matter how much I try and force it.

To each his own.

This.

"Taste" isn't a measurable thing. You can't say that someone does/doesn't have taste because they like/dislike a certain watch brand or design.

Their taste in watches or anything else is simply that - "their" taste.

Buy and wear what you want. I love rolex because no matter where watch trends are in twenty years I know my Sub will still be a relevant watch to wear.

This guy on the other hand...

I was at the Rolex AD last week to try and haggle down the price of a Sub-C(unsuccessful) The AD asked me what other watches I own and I said PAM and AP.. She was not familiar with the brand Audemars Piguet.

Yes, and that for me is the biggest problem with Rolex.

When I see a Rolex on somebody's arm, the first thing that comes to mind is: "It's probably a fake".
And alot of people think this way.

Their popularity and recognisabilaty is also their biggest problem.
There are so many reps and bad fakes around and that makes it hard to keep credibility for the person wearing it.

I like the look of the watches, they are nice, but it's one of the things that makes it a turn off for me.

You must live in a really shitty part of town if you think everyone is wearing a fake Rolex.

Rolex are quality and function with quite a few different designs to appeal to many different types of people. They don't follow the latest trends, which usually end up an embarrassment a year later.

What I don't understand is Panerai. You've got two basic watch styles, the luminor and and the marina or whatever the one with the ugly crown guard is. Then you put in 50 different dials and turn the crown guard upside down or backwards and call it a new model. Most of the hand winds are iterations of a very inexpensive ETA 6497 hand wind or an ETA 7750/53 and you then sell a $300 watch for $7,000.

And you wonder why it's so easy to replicate a 99.9% Chinese copy? To me, that whole brand is bizarre. Biver or whatever the president of Panerai's name is, must be laughing all the way to the bank.

And don't get me started on those ugly Hu Blow and U-boat abominations.

Well put.

How can anyone call this ugly?

No one knows either some stranger use super rep or a gen.

But i can approximate it by looking at their class.
the way they talk, dress, think, behavior, and manner.

I completely agree that Rolex is most recognized brand in watches industry.
But personally i prefer a low profile watches like pam, ap, iwc, patekphilippe,
which only those who know, knows :)
not because of Rolex is fugly, no. Rolex sub is damn good looking watch.

in my opinion, panerai is the most ugly watch ever. its so simple that even a 3 years old kid can draw the dial.

however, when time change, i start to like panerai, now i buy them.

rolex is beautiful, especially the YM2, sub and gmt

A rolex sub is a timeless piece, The design hasn't changed much because it hasn't had to. when i first got into this hobby i vowed not to own a rolex but that soon changed. As soon as i bought my sub-c i fell in love and now own three.

They are my go to watches in my box and hardly anything else get's a look in. Sits perfectly on my wrist. They look great with jeans and t-shirt or a dinner suit or even shorts and vest in the summer.

You wear the watch the watch doesn't wear you. Taste is personal, I like Panerai a a lot but they are too damn big. Hublot, AP, Patek, are all nice too. But let's face it, Casio's are where it's at.

I think, i have to put some history in here for all the Rolex HATERS, wearing Panerai.

The original Panerai design and the case shape wich is the base of all PAMs since 1936 is designed by Rolex, started with a order by the nautic instruments producer Guiseppe Panerai for the italian marines in 1935.

Until 1956 ALL PAM watches where 100% Rolex, branded Panerai.

So you are wearing a watch that was designed and defined by ROLEX, dummy! ;)

True, but I believe the debate is about case and brand identity/style rather than sub-contracting.
Even Rolex in its early days did not produce its own cases, nor movements!

i'm with you, i also think Rolex is plain in apperance, but with its worldwide famous brand recognition, wearing it as a beater is my only reason to choose it, lol
