Last Call: A Race For The Americas!
Contest Ended Feb 3, 2010 at Midnight EST. Winner Announced. Watch order placed.
In order to get ahead of the Chinese New Year, this competition ended 2/3/10. We have a zillion entries already, and many are world-class.
Entries posted after Midnight EST Feb 3, 2010 were not be eligible.
Originally, the purpose of this post was to jump-start posting activity from South American snail racers and others in the Americas. Clearly, though, the race has gone beyond the original vision and as such I am adding a prize and expanding the concept. This was due, in part, because of PM's from many members who were concerned about the thread's veracity and very existence.
Too many of you were left out, including our friends in Norway where snails get stuck on the ice as a tongue to a frozen lightpost, and France because Frenchmen keep adding garlic and butter to them.
To wit, here are the new rules of the 12-day race:
So, on to the prize, which of course is a watch, since this is the new, more seriously watch-focused RWI:
This is a 44mm Homage watch from Tat at Getat Watch Company, a Trusted Dealer I met over at RWG 1.1 while RWI was down. Kind of a well-deserved Homage to RWG 1.1 within an Homage prize.
Note: He is a trusted dealer at RWG 1.1, but Tat is not here at RWI. Many of you have asked for a link, so with that said, here is the site (Mods, let me know if that is not OK and I will remove) http://www.siswatch727.com/index.do

On the last evening of this contest, pedecter asked me to assist him in choosing a winner for this contest. He as much as admitted that the reason was that, despite his insistence to the contrary, he really had gone gay for all you guys, and as such, could not be trusted to impartially choose a winner.
Of course, I was honored to be able to participate (even though it apparently meant that I'd gone all lesbian and would not be similarly biased). I even thought that I might be an ideal jury, having not checked into this thread until tonight, so I had no preconceived favorites as yet. Mind you, as soon as I took my first peek into the thread, I realized that judging would be no simple task. For one thing, you are, as you know, but far too modest to admit, a fantastically creative and original panel of entrants. And perhaps more importantly, I was completely baffled for at least the first twenty posts or so as to exactly what you were actually supposed to come up with (after post twenty, I decided that it didn't really matter).
So after careful perusal of all of the entries, here are the results.
Third Runner Up: acharria, post #42, for using the color scheme to suck up to the admins and mods (although I have no idea where ped's posts went, and can't help him there) and for his continuous commitment to safety with the emphasis on helmet use (mind you, helmets tend to be a lot more helpful if they're actually worn during the race).

Second Runner Up: avenger007 for post #82, not so much for his bionic snail, but more for the poster of the stoned snail beneath it. It's important to remember what can happen when a well-raised snail starts hanging out with the wrong crowd.

First Runner Up (and entrant who will assume the Grand Prize if, for any reason, the chosen winner is unable to fulfill his duties as Grand Prize winner, or if he, you know, gets stripped of his crown because it is later discovered that he posed nude for Penthouse in his misguided youth): JellyJoe's post #6, in which he depicts the construction of his frankensnail. This was an early favorite of mine, and remained unbeatable for most of the thread. I like a man who comparison shops.

Grand Prize winner: theLoveofBotham's entries in posts #81 and #85 took the prize owing to the original design, the ridiculously talented graphics display, impeccable grammar (hey, it was ped who said that I use that as a criterion), and the simple fact that it left me sufficiently in suspense that I, in fact, wanted to see what Prototype Version Three would be.

A very special thank you must also go out to acharria, for the Original Snail that inspired all of this madness.
Congratulations to all of the winners!

To wit, here are the new rules of the 12-day race:
- The "race" is to the best post in the thread. See how it's judged below (Item #8 in the list)
- Your entry can be any transportation modality, not limited to snails. Indigenous species/vehicles are preferred.
- Enter as often as you wish, even though that doesn't help my post count.
- You can post in the thread, but only posts with pictures or graphics will be entered. No pics = it didn't happen.
- Aphorismistic posts are disqualified unless the post is pre-qualified. That process takes 14 days.
- Offer not valid in Rhode Island. Nothing is valid in Rhode Island.
- New Hampshire is close to Rhode Island. Just so you know.
- Entries judged on originality, humor and a credible race-winning scenario. And grammar, of course.
- My decision is final as to which post wins, but I can't win. Damn.
- Entry deadline is 5:00 PM EST Friday, February 12, 2010
- Prize will be ordered to your specs (your choice of strap) on Feb 14th, Valentine's Day. Because I love you guys. But not in a gay way. Unless you are gay, and in that case, I'm OK with that.
- Prize includes the item and shipping. Customs, if any, that's on you.
