That is just too funny. I'd feel sick to my stomach if I bought that for $1k, let alone $4-6k.

i really like panerai. the design and the overall feel is great. but i will never go for a gen. it's insulting that the company would be so opportunistic...

Eeeew! Rough Panerai, rough. What were you thinking?

Then again don't forget that a 16610 used to cost Rolex about 5 to 6 hundred dollars to make and then sold for 5-6k

Yes, but at the very least, it was a in house movement.

And COSC this thing in the Pam isn't even COSC! Chances are the rep keeps better time too.

This is an epic fail on Panerai's end. They are slapping the buyer/loyal enthusiast in the face.

Exactly! Guess who buys these LE specials? Yup, the loyal collector that's who. Just the kinda folk to be upset by a MVT like that. Anyone seen what's in the 360?

Interesting. Some 3 weeks ago I decided to get a Swiss 6497 for my base 202a Pre-V build as all other parts were rather expensive (FGD dial, heavily modified 111J case etc) and I decided I'd go for a real deal and make this one a special one. Got this 6497 from Tourby at 300$, with all mods done (polished H3, properly removed seconds).

Assembled it all early last week and have been wearing it for the past 5 days. Here are some key things I noticed to date, comparing it with my previous build with the high-beat plat movement I got from Josh for 110$:

1. Gen ETA as a little bit smoother to wind - but just a little bit. Unless you know which once you are winding, it feels almost identical.
2. Gen ETA's noise level is again identical to that of the rep movement. Not to noisy but not quiet either. No difference on this one whatsoever
3. Accuracy - better on Josh's movement OTB. Had to open open the CB twice to adjust the beat and now got it to about +/- 15 seconds per day which is fine by my standard. Never had to adjust anything on rep movement.
4. Power reserve - gen ETA runs out of steam in 51 hours on full wind. Rep one goes on to 56 hours, beating the gen movement, so you get almost 10% more power reserve for 30% of the gen price tag.

Well I am kind of thinking the only thing I am unsure of is how long will the rep movement last but other than this, it beats the heck out of the gen article and I wil probably just buy another 2-3 from Josh and keep them in stock should any of my other reps die in the coming years.

Thats a stunning movement, i've seen them for sale on ebay, I would love to drop that into my 005k, then again if i done that my rep would prob be worth more than the Gen 318:biglaugh:

Thats a stunning movement,

Honestly even the look of the gen movement is not all that much better than the rep. May be I am missing something here but I held them side-by-side and studies under a proper magnifier and I cant find what is it than makes the Gen one 3X times more expensive. Now having to look at the gen grade I am thinking that I have over-spent on my 202a as it is a closed-back anyways and may be I should have bought a cheaper (e.g. identical to the gen PAM in question), lower grade ETA from the same source, such as this one....would have made a lot more sense!

I have always maintained that Panerai watches are a rip off and told my friends who bought gens they were nuts. I firmly believe that had Sylvester Stallone not latched onto Panerai when he did then (manual) Pams would be no more than $500 - $600.
The guys at Paneristi will defend Panerai as they have more money than brains and hate to think they have had the piss taken out of them.

This was actually lifted from a Paneristi post.

This question was posed to Angelo Bonati in a Horomundi Forums interview, October 2007.

Angelo's answer:

"In the beginning, we had to bring value to the simple movements we purchased from ETA. At the same time, we realized that imitation watches were starting to emerge. So, we opened up the caseback to show that the caliber had been rhodium plated to a very high level of finish. Then, we kept this type of decoration when we once again improved the quality of the movement. In 2004, we changed to a movement decorated with Geneva stripes and with swan-neck regulator, which was an even more refined movement."

and, in 2011, we.............well, we now know what they did when they thought no one was looking anymore.

Wow, that's disappointing. After seeing the average some PAM models were going for at Southerby's, I was contemplating getting into gen PAM's. Now I'm going to have to re-think that.
