so, how do you know if the mechanism is dead? i just received my watch and i think i got a doa. the seconds dial was not moving, so i tinkered with the crown to change the time and date. that went fine, then i tried to carefully wind it a few turns and nothing.

should the watch have arrived with a moving seconds hand? how many "swirls" does it take to get the second hand to move?

$#!^, not on my first rep!

BTW: the rotor appears to be turning in BOTH directions! shouldn't it only move in one direction? it spins freely counter clockwise, but i can still watch it rotate clockwise. all the gears appear to be rotating when i wind.

The rotor will move in both directions. You should get the second hand to begin moving after a few shakes of the watch. I personally don't 'wind' auto watches. I shake them in my hand 10-20 times then set the time and wear. This should get it rolling, if not... There may be a problem.

Super lumed watches are great. But, when the lume on the hands doesn't match the indices, it's quite annoying and really defeats the point of super luming in the first place
