Haven't "Got It" Yet About Paneri.

So how long does it take before I will "get it" about Paneri? Right now, that crown guard thingy just looks strange to me and completely unnecessary. I've only been at this since Sept. 2009, so maybe I need to give it a few more months.

I'm with you, sorta. I like/love the look of the watch but it doesn't jump out at me like others. I have some gen watches and in hindsight I don't think I could part with $6k for a Panerai over a Breitling or Rolex

I didn't get the Pam thing when I was new, and am still not an afficianado.
However, the Pam MUST be seen in real life to be appreciated and understood. I have two, and they are really better, cooler, and more interesting than the pics convey.
Go to a Get Together and try one. Or just take the plunge and buy a nice one. You'll quickly understand what all the hubub is about.

I have a friend who collects them, gens, and I still don't get it ;) He tried trading me one for a SS sub I had and I told him I just couldn't get into it. I wore it for a week or so even.

Vanatic.

I like PAM for a few reasons.
I was looking for a nice watch, dont want a rolex or something people think was a fake before see it.
So i found PANERAI, movies guys got it (not Sly, but Statham, Brosnan and others). most people never heard of PANERAI.
The watch is big and beautiful and the straps looks great.
So, PLEASE get a Mini-Fiddy 6497 for us125, and then you get it.
And if, somehow, you dont like it, you will sale it in 1 day here, Im sure.
Enjoy PANERAI vanatic.

I appreciate them for what they are and why they are popular. I own exactly "0" of these atm. I have tried them, I have modded them and I have parted with them. Sigh... I too am waiting for it to "take". :)

Vanatic-- I thought PAMs were ugly when I first came on the forum three years ago, but I have to admit that my attitude towards them has changed as I've gotten to know more about them. Whereas before, I thought they were just ugly, I now think they are ugly, silly, and completely ridiculous.

I have long maintained that they look like Fisher Prices' My First Watch. PAMs are silly, silly watches. And for what they are, the gens are the most profoundly overpriced watches out there (yes, beating Rolex by a mile).

So you're not missing anything. PAMs are silly watches.

One caveat. I do like one PAM model-- the 42mm Radiomir dual chrono. Of course, the reason I like this watch is that it looks nothing like a typical PAM. And they don't even make it anymore (at least on the rep side), so that should tell you something.

There is nothing "to get" about them. You either like them or you don't. Myself I can't get enough of them.

I don't think "getting it" for a Pam is any different than "getting it" for a Rolex or any other brand. I am not a Rolex fan. I have 3 Pams. I love Brietling, Tags, IWC and others.

It will always be just personal taste. I have personal preference to certain cars and women too.

I like cars, booze, women, cigars and PAMs but actually not in that order.

I'm with you. I've tried the Luminor and the Radiomir and the mini fiddy and they are just plain Fugly. I will have to say the Radiomir at least looks a little classy and I actually wear them on occasion. And they're actually comfortable.

When I see a Panerai in the wild, which is very seldom, I think "FAKE" much more than seeing a Rolex. With Rolex you're generally not sure, even if you're thinking it.

I'm wearing my 177 today for the first time in a while. It is my first and only PAM. One is enough for me. Looking through the Panerai catalog is like listening to a skipping record. Theres only so many ways you can finish the same. Damn. Watch.

Women tend to like Panerai. It photographs really well. They work into your wardrobe well with the strap versatility, too. Its a nice watch, but not my favorite.

This thread is silly. It's like saying why do you like chocolate over vanilla? I personally like the PAM's for simplicity. I think Rolex's are boring. But why would you care what i think? Buy what you like and enjoy!

I used to think this about Pams and even posted a question similar to yours early on in my hobby. Now I have two Pams.

I said the same thing about Bell & Ross. Now I have one of them.

Morale: Don't even ask. Just buy and appreciate. You'll have your answer once it is on your wrist.

Agreed, this is the beauty of buyingreps, if you don't like it, sell it on. You won't loose much if you toss it if it's unworn/lightly used...;)

Coming from a fan of RADO, I'll take those comments with a grain of salt. Thanks.
