What utter bullshit! I have clients who dress in Costco jeans, Haynes tees and Fila sneakers yet wear 40k watches. In fact one of them wears a Nautilus and that same guy drives a 40yo F250 most days. Why? Because he can.
Hell, there is a 22yo trainee manager at a local Burger King who wears a gold PP Calatrava that belonged to his grandad. I have met a Maccas drive thru cashier who had on his great uncle's D^D issue sub.

Also if you think you tell wealth by the clothes people wear and the cars they drive you have never been around the truly wealthy. People like that don't have to make a statement. I have one client who kept getting tossed out of the yard that was overhauling his 14 million dollar Princess MY because he looked like a local bum. Same guy recently had his early Lear Jet totally refurbished, new paint, interior, glass cockpit and new uprated engines. The plane has a special pouch just inside the door for his flipflops . . . Clothes mean jack shit, how you conduct and hold yourself is what shows.

Truer words were never spoken. Many people I know with the whole package the OP describes (clothes, cars, watches) are trying too hard to show it off and rarely can afford the lifestyle they are trying to portray. I know a few less than bright people who sold their homes so they could buy very nice luxury cars and toys and now living in apartments. Who is more fake than that? Enjoy the designs of the watches, they are rarely worth the dealer markup. And as for Costco, great company but don't expect them to always take stuff back. They ended that with electronics because people abused it. I doubt they would blink twice doing the same with watches worth thousands because their owners are too cheap to pay maintenance for them.

+1 boss. Real money (old money) don't brag about it and flash off. I have a customer I met a couple of years ago he drives an S class lives in a crazy house has more money than God and wears jeans and a tee shirt most of the time and wears a beat up old as sin omega.

In the region where my wife grew up, a farmer who has made some money might buy a nice silo (like a Harvestore) but never a $60K pickup.

If a farm family is away for a month or two during the long winters, they were in Hawaii or someplace hot, but didn't brag about it afterward.

Something to be said for humility. Some of those farmers have an impressive balance sheet.

Exceptions not the rule. I lived in that world for 30 years.
I am retired from the Music Industry and there is no other industry where people who have so much FU money dress down However you are making the exceptions. (How many burger flippers inherit $30,000 watches?) People who own personal Airplanes don't dress up to fly to the Bahamas for the weekend. and BTW they buy a lot of Gens there as they are a lot less expensive from ADs there.

One thing for sure is when you drill deeper into these people's lives who wear $30,000 watches the reveals of their wealth become very clear. They first of all have a LOT of expensive watches, They have a beater car for most treks into the wild but rock their $100K cars other times. Their homes are not 3000SF family of four houses. Their third home on the beach at Venice Beach may be....Anyone who drops $30K for a watch has dropped a lot more for other things before the watch in their lives, I know wealthy CHEAP people. They will never think a watch is with even $3000, Watches are a part of lifestyle and usually the LAST thing wealthy people Spend a fortune on after their homes and cars.

Someone who is wealthy and shops at discount stores and drives old Pick up trucks is not likely to ever think its a good value to buy a $1,000 watch. You have to drill deeper into someone's lifestyle then you can bet their watch is the real thing....or not.

If I see a 20 something with a $10,000 watch driving a Scion, its a good bet the watch is fake. 20 somethings care first about cars then places to live and toys well before thinking about a watch that may impress someone. Even with young suddenly wealthy musicians. They don;t run to the Jewelry store. They run to the high end car lots. Then create their seduction caves and THEN maybe buy some jewelry. Mostly to attract the opposite sex.

People in their 30s are too family oriented to deal with $30,000 watches unless they were wealthy before. If I see a family of four in a mini Van and the dad is wearing a Smurf two things come to mind. 1. They inherited a watch the would not be wearing at Wal Mart,,,,or its a fake. Now what is the likelihood of someone inheriting a Smurf? The numbers of wealthy people who can buy a $30,000 watch is very very very very small.

IF I was driving a 10 year old Honda Civic i would not be wearing a $5000 watch. Gen or Rep.

Really interesting thread here, not much to add, except @King: it's Breitling, not Brietling... and Hublot, not Hulblot

Thanks I am always making those errors.....

Didn't know the regular price point at Costco was $5K .... most importantly isn't Costco considered "Grey Market" just in case King721 that means not an AD for the brand. Does Costco now offer lifetime service guarantee on their Grey Market time pieces?

Just curious ........

YEs and they admit it and offer lifetime service or refund policy on the watch BECAUSE they admit they are not ADs. I had this confrimed with an email they sent me.

I would say the avg age of the forum is 24 years old or younger.....IF fact I thin anyone over 30 would be in the minority or a Mod.Which kind of proves my point and suggestion that people walk the watch they are rocking in other areas of their life lest they be secretly laughed at if not blatantly called out.. Never would have thought this idea would have lit a flame fest and a sophomoric tit for tat.

Reveals a lot of about the "hobby" and the people who participate in the "hobby" The people who make out the best are the TDs,

To those who said I should sell my watches. I won't do that since I discovered it is illegal as hell. Not worth taking the chance for a couple hundred dollars. I am learning about the upside and downside of the rep world and different rep sites have a different aura. The ones that discuss Gens seem to have older people and less Mother jokes...

57, with a few gens and 16 reps, I make a conscious effort NOT to mislead anyone. I wear and own them for my own pleasure. IMO, the rolexes of the world have made their own beds by charging $5k-$10k and up for what are really nice $800 watches. [emoji50]
