The friends I have that went to top grad schools for their MBA worked hard and sacrificed those years of their lives
The campus at Yale and Harvard when I visited both were filled of these types. mommy and daddy weren't paying the way anymore but even if they were none of the students had jobs so no one seemed to have expendable income

Undergrad seemed so much different
And I think schools where students still work are different but the top business graduate schools are all about busting your butt to get to the top of the class and land a 6 figure job in short time and be set for life because of a couple of years of sacrifice
Unlike undergrad where people care what you drive and wear in these MBA programs where you rank in the class seemed paramount
My 2 friends who now both work on Wall Street and get yearly bonus many times my yearly salary would have never spent even $300 on a watch during those hard years
Now they could buy most any gen they want

Gen 3570.50 Moonwatch.
I don't care what school you go to, if you wear a Rolex ( rep or gen), you're just gonna look like a pompous ass if you're in your 20's.

I tend to agree, the only exception might be a vintage piece.

I suspect that this will be an environment where you'll have at least a couple of serious watch enthusiasts, and who are naturally competitive and will surely be eyeing any fancy watch that you might have, so the call out risk will be much higher than amongst the general population. I would suggest a TC Submariner with a gen insert.

Any other mods necessary to get me by?

This is a prestigeous business school, it'll be full of pompous asses. But I do like the idea of a gen Speedmaster Pro, I don't think I would mark the accomplishment of being admitted to a competitive professional program by buying a rep, irrespective of how accurate it is.

I dont consider this a celebration watch. More of a "keep up with the Jones" / "I have done well" watch.

I too went to a top business school ... the guys there are pretty clued up about watches, so while you will fool them if they arent on the forums youll always feel a bit on the outside, so if you can afford it Id buy a gen, so why not start now if funds allow.

This is what I am afraid of... I dont really want to buy gen now. Rather wait to celebrate after i am done.

The friends I have that went to top grad schools for their MBA worked hard and sacrificed those years of their lives

I expect I will do the same. But I still like my watches ;)

I bought a REALLY old Omega from the 1950s or 1960s... I got a great deal on it like 150 quid (was an ebay risk) but showed it to a guy at work who is a big watch collector (we are talking vintage rollies and the like) and he thought it was an awesome catch.... Cant beat a good classic!

I suggest you invest in a new IPhone and if you still need a watch spend $330 on a Mondaine with the same clock face Apple thought enough of to pay millions to use. They are reliable and sporty while being dressy enough for any occassion, not too common, and ooze Euro taste. When you get out of school and get some money together you can buy a tailored suit and a classic Rolex Explorer I or IWC and keep the Mondaine for weekends. I've never seen a top businessman wear a Sub or other dive watch at work- on a yacht or golf course, yes, but never in the boardroom.

Really, I don't think anyone cares what kind of watch you wear. Wear whatever floats your boat. But if you hang around with those types that need to keep up with Jones and are the status types, then you'd better just wear a gen, because those are the people you will be hanging around with.

You need to get noticed. You need to be outstanding. You need first impressions. Wear a clock, Panerai or even AP. Rep is <$500

there is a lot of good advice here. The mondaine is nice, never noticed it before...It is simple, but i love the open case back.

Unfortunately, not in this environment...

This is a really cool idea. I am looking now. Any suggestions for models to keep an eye out for?

I disagree with a lot of the advice here. There will be some watch enthusiasts there, but still not very many and very unlikely that any will be able to call out one of the high end reps. Your basic black sub will be pretty common, and no one will think twice about you wearing it or wonder if it's face. Pams are still popular, if you have big enough arms/wrists to pull one off there's nothing wrong with one. A top B school is probably one of the few places where you can wear a high end watch and it won't attract much attention, even from people who know watches.
Has this ever gotten you into a tough position? Did your pre-school industry job make your current watch collection believable?

Personally, and IF this is a serious question (FIVE THOUSAND!!!???) you can buy what you want, but where's the interesting and engaging story?

A moonwatch would be a BRILLIANT choice provided it meant something to you, that you could speak about - it made perfect sense to me because from the youngest age I followed the space race, watched Armstrong land on the moon in real time and joined the Royal Australian Airforce to get even a tiny piece of the action - therefore a moonwatch makes sense. See what I mean?

Youre young and hip - I am old and replacement hip

:D

but again, if I had my time over and was attending a school which attempts to provide me with high-level skills to do something that ACTUALLY matters in the world of work, I wouldn't buy a replica unless there was a really compelling story to it - for example:

"I built this one as a homage to Albert Einstein who changed the world with the power of his mind ... it impressed me at the time and when I read up on Longines, discovered they were a brand renowned for accuracy and reliability blah blah blah"

EinsteinLonginesAntiq_LRG.jpg

Or..... something like: "I bought and had restored, one of these because it was Humphrey Bogart's preferred timepiece and used in a number of his films including Casablanca. Casablanca's story really resonates with me because of the ideals displayed of: courage against great odds and; the notion that knowing what's right and doing what's right don't always coincide.... the film itself is remarkable to me because it was not only a smash hit all over the world, it was made in six and a half days, on a very modest budget - showing that quality storytelling doesn't have to always be wrapped in 50 million dollar advertising budgets, or need 3D glasses." BTW It and the great dictator (Chaplin's greatest film) were both made during wartime. Chaplin wore an IWC for anyone who's interested.

These stories relate loosely to my own history by the way ... I just took far too long to get to what really mattered to me - I hope you find what matters a LOT earlier than I did!

I can just see a lecturer asking you about your Bogie or Einstein rep ... and you saying "Time matters to me and the history surrounding my watch reminds me to make the most of mine."

Or you could buy a rep from China and tell that story

:)

I went to a top five B school and had a gen sub (many years ago). I don't recall anyone ever noticing or caring about watches at all. Mostly it was drinking and talking about business ideas.
