Just got into VERY Prestigious Business School - What watch to wear?

At b.school, you might need a low profile watch that's simple and ready for any occasions, be it play or work/interview.

I think PAM380 and a few straps for different occasions (a nice dressy gator for formal event, an ammo/nice tan leather for daily beater wear) would be just fine. It's nice and pretty accurate yet still simple and humble.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck with the school ;)

Can't go wrong mate.. Even ur lecturers will notice cos they wanna know what time to end the lesson

Which prestigious business school did Mr. Flavor Flav attend? He certainly epitomizes understated class and sophistication, don't you agree?

Get a Tudor rep.
My Prince Oysterdate screams sophisticated business school.

I think a simple Pam, either a 380, 111 or 104 is a good choice. You can dress them up or down in a matter of seconds (springbars FTW!) and they make a statement without being too flashy. Also, they are one of the few brands that are repped so well that there is arguably no justification for spending 20x as much for the gen. No one will be able to call one out, especially not if you put it on a good aftermarket strap (or use the rubber, which i like).

I will comment that I got my MBA about two years ago (never did get the great job to go with the title, I have pretty much lost hope on that count. . . but, thats another story) and I wore an Asian Market Citizen. It fit in quite well.

No one was wearing the over-sized watches that are popular with the WUS, Action Hero, and Rapper crowd(I consider 40mm+ to be over-sized). You should be looking for understated. As have been commented here, people chould be paying attention to you and not your toys.

Shoot for a simple white case with a simple dial in about 37mm-39mm; essentially, a normal, normal sized, watch. Leave the Pams for clubbing, they will look silly in Business School.

Ony one person wore a rolex, he was the head of the department and taught the capstone class (and I will admit, his class was great, I also did my systems dynamics project with him). He wore an oyster-date, not one of the big ones.

One of the students wore an Omega, it was a large watch, almost 40mm, and it looked silly on him (when he wasn't in the room some of the girls in the program commented on it and laughed about it once). I asked him about it and he told me it was a gift from his father.

Business school is not a WUS show and the watches worn (and almost everyone did wear a watch) were almost all <$400 gens.

I think as 45acp says if you wear a super rep then almost no one will be able to call you out but if any of them are into watches and some of them will be, status and wealth etc, then they may take an interest in yours esp if they have the same brand, and youre not gonna feel comfortable when that happens and so just for peace of mind Id wear a gen, even a Raymond Weil of used Tag for $5-600.

Worse thing in the world is to be called out where you then have to see these people every day. You can explain the great value and sense of reps as its a business school but theyll always think youre just cheap and fake. Not worth the risk for me.

I would go with a Steinhart. They have really nice watches with great build quality at great prices. I have an Apollon Chrono and I love it! I will be getting a Navi B-Chrono instead of an IWC rep.

Since it is a gen, you never have to be worried about being called out. Look at their Pilot watches and Pilot Chronos.

I hope this helps....

Hey guys, I gust got into a world renowned business school. It was not easy. Hard work, good recommendations and a bit of luck.

Now... the most important question! What watch do I wear on my first day?

I am in my mid-late 20s. I have done alight, but have not made a tremendous amount of money. I could afford a gen under 5k, but we are talking reps here!

Comments please!

First of all, Big Congratz mate!

The choices out there are staggering....

Let's start with, what type of watches appeal to you? Do want all SS? Gold? Sporty? Big? Thin?

For a business professional, I would go with a Rolex Explorer I. It can be worn with basically any attire from a tuxedo all the way down to Bermuda shorts and still look classy.

It's also a classic style which never goes out of fashion, so money well spent in my humble opinion.

Personally, I love subs, but they are probably the most repped watch on the market. So an Explorer I should set you aside from the crowd.

Omega deville, or Planet ocean if you got the wrist for it. Id say hell no for watches like Pams, brietlings, hublots and AP's they get too much attention, rolex also can come across as too pretentious.
IWC is also a good option.

Now that I think about it, a Milgauss would be a nice choice. Not too big, not too expensive, but distinctive.

If you can't afford to just wear a rep proudly and openly as a hobbyist or collector, or if you just want to impress fellow students with something that is not really you, I think you

A) have the wrong approach to both reps and school, and
B) should just wear a gen Tissot or even Bulova. Unpretentious yet elegant, functional, and ...honest.

The watch of choice should be your last concern in business school. Young, pretentious students are only boasting their families' achievements, not their own. If you are nervous about fitting in (you shouldn't) wearing a rep you can't pull off will only make you more uncomfortable. And this is you with yourself, regardless of what others perceive.

The best advice I read somewhere in this forum is that it's the man that makes the watch, not the other way around. If you can pull it off, you can wear anything because its you, or else you can look insecure and out of place regardless of what you are wearing. Don't expect a watch to give you the confidence you don't already have: a timepiece will only reinforce whatever you are already projecting of yourself. Be it pretentiousness, unease, ...or confidence.

In the end nobody cares what watch you wear. There might be one watch geek at school who will ask you about your watches. The other rich kids that wear high end watches aren't watch hobbiests. They just wear them and will probably not notice what you are wearing.

I think you are putting too much thought into this. What are you going to do, wear only one watch for 2 years? I don't thnk you need to give up reps. Just go to school, get the feel for the place and where a watch appropriate to the situation.

Don't get a moonwatch, speedy pros are just about struggling to keep low key enough to be still known as a 'respectable' wis watch, we don't want them becoming more and more ubiquitous like a sub or a pam, i.e. fashion item by business types ;) ...no offense intended!

The new white or black dial explorer II or explorer I are pretty good. The recent ebel discovery chrono offer from toro is worth looking into. Can't go too far wrong with a TC sub with gen insert. None of those guys will tell the difference.

I went to an Ivy League law school and no few were pompous. Most people there on financial aid and student loans and don't recall anyone having a high end watch...maybe a couple of tags. My roommate had sub that his dad gave him before he passed away. That was about it for nice watches. I would go for something that is understated. A submariner would work. So would a planet ocean. Stay away from the big blingy watches.
