Whole lotta love for Penguins goalie Brent Johnson’s Led Zeppelin-inspired mask

03-us-blog-avatar-40x40_000143.jpg
By Greg Wyshynski

Mask art can be a window into a goaltender's soul. That established, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Brent Johnson's soul is a funny-smelling van from the 1970s that shakes every time Robert Plant yelps.

David Arrigo
The brilliant David Arrigo has designed yet another Led Zeppelin-inspired mask for Johnson, the sixth one he'll have worn in the NHL. Two more and he can wear a different mask for every minute of "Stairway."
Here are The Zoso Mask; The Physical Graffiti Mask; The Zeppelin Mask; The Winter Classic Mask; The Collage; and the reverse angle on this mask.

I played at Western Spring Stadium, Auckland, NZ with Led Zeppelin

tumblr_lzxiphDlM11qmle2jo1_500.jpg

On this day in 1972, I played with Led Zeppelin at the Western Spring Stadium - a natural amphitheatre in Auckland.
As a rule, in the early 70s, bands were not going to New Zealand following Australia because of the cost involved. I was really up for it as my memories were rich following the February 1967 Roy Orbison, Yardbirds and The Walker Brothers Tour of Australia and New Zealand.
During that '67 tour in Auckland, a certain Clive Coulson was the singer in the opening band called The Mods and he was later to become road manager for Led Zeppelin two years later, in 1969.

Page and Plant played Katowice, Poland

tumblr_lzz4u0elsK1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

In 1998, Page and Plant played Katowice in Poland, nine years after the Berlin Wall came down. It had been said that the Mayor was a "Rock & Roll Mayor" and he would like to see us after the show.
When I met him he began to explain how the music kept them going and the attitude of the Soviet authorities at that time, whereby a group of four friends would club the money together to buy a record from a clandestine source. It would cost one month's pay and then the one who bought it would play it and hide it, then he would pass it onto one of the other friends who would play it and hide it etc, etc. If they were discovered they would go to jail.
Well times had changed - Katowice had a rocking Mayor and had a serious enthusiasm for rock music. It was a memorable evening.

I recorded at Headley Grange with Led Zeppelin

tumblr_m00ysmapx31qmle2jo1_500.jpg

On this day in 1974 at Headley Grange with Led Zeppelin, I had recorded 'Drop Down Mama' (which became 'Custard Pie'), 'Everybody Makes It Through' ('In the Light') and 'Swan Song', parts 1 and 2. 'Swan Song' was an ambitious piece that I had prepared in my home studio with a number of sections and orchestrated overdubs and we laid down two contrasting sections of it. It never made it any further than this at the time, but the song title was chosen as the name for the forthcoming label that would see the release of 'Physical Graffiti'.
Swan Song was to be reworked, some years later, with Paul Rodgers who supplied some inspired lyrics and it became 'Midnight Moonlight'.

Bad Company was signed under the Swan Song label, which was owned by Led Zeppelin. So in essence, Zeppelin was Bad Company's record company.
"The Firm" came to life after Jimmy had played The Arms Tour concerts along with Paul Rogers after Steve Winwood (who was Jimmy's lead vocalist ATM) left the tour.

On this day in 1970 I performed at the K.B. Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark, with Led Zeppelin. We were prepared to play as "The Nobs" because an irate relative of the Zeppelin airship family, Eva Von Zeppelin, threatened to sue us if we used their name in her home country.

I WATCHED JEFF BUCKLEY IN MELBOURNE
tumblr_m04ol1RigO1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

Jeff Buckley was something of an etherial spirit: a musical magician whose ‘Grace’ album showcased a unique talent. His name was on the lips of all musos from the release of that album and for the next two years.
I had heard him sing a couple of songs at a distance on the Other Stage at Glastonbury, where Page and Plant were headlining: you could feel him, it was extraordinary. I had listened intently to ‘Grace’ whilst I was on tour and made a point to see him at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne on this day in 1996. His level of communication through the dynamics of his music, vocals, lyrics, guitar playing and reportif built to something of a spiritual communion. I know those that witnessed him would agree. That night after the show he had invited me to work with him on his next album. Unfortunately, I never saw him again but he left a tantalising legacy.

LONDON (AP) — With a little help from Led Zeppelin, the widow of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun has donated more than 26 million pounds ($41 million) to Oxford University to fund humanities scholarships for graduate students.
On Wednesday the university announced the Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Program, which will initially fund 15 annual international scholarships for the study of subjects including literature, history, music, art history, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies and archaeology.
That will rise to at least 35 scholarships a year.
The university said the donation is one of the biggest in its 900-year history.
Mica Ertegun said her husband, who died in 2006, had loved the arts. She said the enriching potential of the arts and humanities was especially important "in these times, when there is so much strife in the world."
The son of a Turkish diplomat, Ahmet Ertegun helped shape the careers of musicians including Ray Charles, Eric Clapton and the rock band Led Zeppelin, which he signed to Atlantic in the 1960s after hearing a demo.
The Oxford program grew from Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion concert, which raised money for the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund. It pays for scholarships in Britain, the United States and Turkey.
Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones said he was "very proud" that the concert had led to the new program.

Death Wish II was released

1010382.jpg

Around July 1981, I was contacted by director Michael Winner to view a rough cut of his latest film, Death Wish II; the second film in what was to become a popular series of cult thrillers. When I viewed this film the required music sections had been identified; it was ninety minutes long and would need forty-five minutes of music, from pieces barely a few seconds in length through to the longest piece; a chase section lasting five minutes and fifty seconds. Michael asked me if I would like to compose the soundtrack. At this time I had my own studio, The Sol, and saw this as being an exciting challenge.
Although the songs with vocals were only set to appear in the film for a matter of seconds, I had recorded full versions of them anyway. It was just as well I did, a three quarters of the way through this writing, recording and transfer process, it was put to me that the record label, Atlantic, wanted an album. So now there was a multitude of sonic vignettes in mono for the film and stereo album for Atlantic, which is how I ended up recording my first soundtrack and soundtrack album.

This was recorded on 3rd March and broadcast on 9th March.

Page and Plant gave me an incredible opportunity to play some foreign locations. Istanbul qualified as one of the most exotic. The Hagia Sophia Mosque is an architectural triumph. The souk, a bee-hive of hustle bustle and barter. I remember being backstage at the Bostanci Gösteri Merkezi about to play the show when a lengthy power cut ensued. It crossed my mind that there might be the possibility of unrest with the atmosphere of humidity, anticipation and excitement. Eventually the power resumed and we could do the show to a really enthusiastic audience. The only blemish was recurring thoughts of the film ‘Midnight Express’

The only way to play this material on the radio was via these sort of programmes and, although we were promoting the awful 'Goodnight Sweet Josephine', this was still a vehicle where you could pass 'Think About It', 'White Summer' and 'Dazed and Confused' under the pop-dominated radar. 'Think About It' was to be covered later by Aerosmith.

Interview:
"... Led Zeppelin has electrified blues (and rock as well, since the final quarter of an hour was devoted to a medley of old themes hurled against the rock scene with a wild-eyed crowd and made to kneel in prayer, one of the worshipers of the god page) to the bottom of his old bones and does something else, a language so different from what it originally was that the question of authenticity does not even arise. What was human became mechanical, but this particular machine has a pretty terrifying power of those to whom it speaks, comparable only to that of another set that does not make sense, the Iron Butterfly (already the name ... ): the power to make its listeners giddy sense of the term. Page, who I asked after the show what he thought, looked surprised, as if this problem he had never occurred to me, as if it was not surprising to see a boy of fifteen years to roll to his feet and worship, pray. Pray for Jimmy Page! The latter he had he put his boot in the face, the kid would have said thank you and licked the blood from his lips touched by God. "It feels fantastic to make people so happy," he said. Happy? Perhaps, after all ...
Led Zeppelin was huge and ominous, as the red sky projectors, crackling furnace in which the gods were twisted-puppets of the great decline. "
