Led Zeppelin recorded 'Supershow'

On this day in 1969, we performed 'Dazed and Confused' with what seemed to be a pretty experienced production team, as the camera angles appeared interesting at the time. They also used some dry ice, which was quite vibey, and we were just part of a number of artists that were to appear on this show - some of whom had not yet recorded and were due to arrive at the building.
There was definitely a timeslot for us to do another number, especially as the other artists hadn't arrived, and I suggested to the director that maybe it would be a good opportunity to do 'Communication Breakdown' as a second number, but they declined the offer and said it wasn’t necessary!

LED ZEPPELIN RECORDED THE BBC SESSIONS AT MAIDA VALE, LONDON
tumblr_m13vj7uyCB1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

This was a show that had been done for the BBC World Service, for the ‘Alexis Korner: Rhythm and Blues Champion’ show. Alexis Korner was considered to be one of the pioneers of establishing blues and changing the jazz venues to R&B, alongside the influential blues visionary Cyril Davis on harmonica. As there was, presumably, a blues requisite to the show, we performed the blues standards ‘Can’t Quit You Baby’, ‘You Shook Me’ and ‘Sunshine Woman’ - which was the result of a jam in the studio during that session. There was also the mischievous inclusion of ‘What Is and What Should Never Be’ which was to be recorded literally one month later, on the 19th April in 1969. The brief on that session was for 15 minutes airtime and that’s how we dealt with it.

Yeah, I sure miss mine, wife sold it in a garage sale. Can't hold it against her but man it's always great to hear the "noise" on a turntable.

I learned a lot about the band today......my son phoned this morning asking me to collect him and his mates from a soccer game at 5pm. I was waiting for over an hour.

Fortunately I had the boxset (that I mentioned Zo) in the car which came with a 40 page information booklet.

I read it twice!

I love this quote from Robert Plant, "When people talk about how good other guitarists are, they are talking about how they play within accepted structures of contemporary guitar playing, which Pagey plays miles outside to. He plays from somewhere else. I like to think of it as...a little left of heaven."

You know B, Robert has been quoted waxing poetic about his partner on occasion...I think this is the best one on record...

Led Zeppelin appeared on the BBC's 'How Late It Is' programme

tumblr_m17kvn7vUv1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

On this day in 1969, Led Zeppelin appeared on 'How Late It Is' - a BBC programme recorded at Lime Grove Studios. This was a pilot for an arts discussion programme directed by Tony Palmer. We supplied the musical slot and played 'Communication Breakdown' live. There were no interviews with us. The programme established itself and developed with more emphasis on music of the day. During the course of its run it had interviews with the likes of Eric Burdon, John Lennon, Yoko Ono and The Nice, amongst others. Unfortunately the BBC tape of Led Zeppelin no longer exists. This was a pilot programme.

Michael Winner's film 'Scream For Help' was released

Today sees the 1985 release of 'Scream For Help', a Michael Winner film. John Paul Jones had been drafted in to do the soundtrack and he asked me to play on it. We wrote 'Crack Back' and ‘Spaghetti Junction' and both pieces appeared in the film and soundtrack album.

I jammed with The Reputations in New York

tumblr_m1b9ikXNwX1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

In 1991, I had been in New York to have discussions with David Coverdale about joining forces for an album. I know I went to the China Club during that stay in New York and apparently had a jam with a band called The Reputations. David was staying at the Plaza Hotel and it was really apparent how the hotel had been over-gilded and tarted up from its stately past in its latest refurbishment.

I worked with The Rolling Stones in New York

the-rolling-stones-one-hit-to-the-body-cbs.jpg

On this day in 1986, 'One Hit (To the Body)' was released on The Rolling Stones’ Dirty Work album. Ronnie Wood had got in touch with me while I was staying at the Plaza Hotel in New York and invited me to come to the studio and lay down some guitar on a track of Keith’s. I was really up for this idea as I had done some studio work before on a track playing with Keith at Ronnie’s studio at The Wick in Richmond, England.
Actually, the session was not for Keith’s album, it was The Rolling Stones’ and I overdubbed a number of solos over the track. I think it worked out pretty good. Keith kindly sent me a magnum of champagne after the session.

LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED IN LYON, FRANCE

tumblr_m1gxih6m7S1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

By this point in time, the French had become quite passionate about seeing their music for free and we had cut the French tour short due to nil security at the concerts and a fighting rabble inside the building. However, we’d been cajoled into playing this as our last date of the French tour. It was so chaotic getting into the building and, although the audience were really enthusiastic, the whole of this episode had left such a sour taste that we didn’t play in France again with Led Zeppelin until Paris in the 1980 tour.

Page and Plant appeared on TFI Friday

ppmarch-1.png

A live broadcast from the Riverside Studios for Chris Evans' show 'TFI Friday', where Robert Plant and I had an interview with Chris and performed 'Rock and Roll' and 'Most High' as part of the promotion for 'Walking into Clarksdale'. I liked Chris and his show very much, he definitely had the best show on TV at that time.

Zo, that clip just made my day. TFI Friday was the highlight of British TV back then, for me anyway.

I remember seeing that show broadcast live and I'd completely forgotten it. Hard to believe it was 14 years ago.

Thanks MrZ.....I thoroughly enjoyed that.
