Why Reps

Nawadays i think that would be more interesting to ask WHY GEN? I mean, for a very reasonable amount of money yesterday i ordered a DSSD from BK; a watch that maybe it's 90% as original so.....why the gen? I don't need to feel important because of the piece i have on my wirst. Why should i have to pay Rolex 9k + $ for something that i know worth much less and that i can get for a fraction of that amount?
All this without considering that i'm the kind of person that like to change often.....why buy something so expensive that i might get bored about after 6 months? I'd rather spend that money for a nice caribbean holiday with my wife and kid! So OP feel free to answer: WHY GEN?

PS: i can afford the wach i want without having to save......i just don't care about gen.

Edit: just realized got late into the party....:(

well gen is a gen my friend , but i would spend 10k on a watch only if i had a nice house , 2 nice cars, and at least 1million in the bank .
not like that looser saving my quarters and getting a second job at the gas station to save for his dssd. im sure he lives in an apartment and pays 850$ a month for it .

the gifted rolex is probably some POS 1960's DJ that was his grandfathers that was probably a retirement or 30 year gift to his grandfather. Anyone could buy one at pawn shop for cheap but for some reason you feel you are better.

Have people ever thought that buying a few 100 dollar rep might be a test run. I have no clue why some gen owners feel like a god and people are below them since they don't have a gen rolex.

Just like most of the guys on gen forums, just one big circle jerk full of douchbags. Somewhere were this guy needs to go back too.

yes, gen is a gen, but $9000 are $9000 and can be much better used than using them on a watch that only differs from a rep in price. Ok, i agree that if you are a real fan in watches and you're a millionnaire you won't buy replicas.......but i think that this is 10% of cases......most of people just want to have a gen because makes them feel "more"....and they save their quarters to do it....

"I still did not hear a answer to why you buy a Rolex Rep?" Hmmmmm, let me think.... Ohhhhh yeah, thats easy.... Grrrrr, becuase I can afford to buy 30 watches for the price of your one watch, and make it so close to real that jacka$$es like "GENOWNER" can't tell the difference.... Man this guy doesn't have a clue, he's probably sitting his parents basement playing world of warcraft rubbing lotion on his sores, do us all a favor buddy find the nearist freeway and go play in it.... At least our real gen members know how to conduct themselves, take note Mr. I got it as a gift and I have no clue what the F is going on....... Sorry guys, I have no patience for someone that asks dumba$$ questions like this idiot.... Now lets get back to enjoying the watches....

I'm late to the party, fun read...

$10k that has to be spent on watches... Reps all the way, though at this point I'd be hard pressed to find 10k worth of reps that I like and don't already have...

I still did not hear a answer to why you buy a Rolex Rep? You want to pass it off as real! So you are paying for a name painted on a piece of junk. At least when you are spending money on a Gen you are getting value for the money.

You sir are a douche, plain and simple. We don't go on the Rolex Forum telling them how stupid they are to buy genuine, but I think they are.

In the last couple of years I have had a genuine DJ, two 14060m's, as well a Submariner. I sold all those as the economy went south and don't think I'll be buying genuine again.

In the last few months I have bought several replicas (what you refer to as fakes).

As far as a piece of junk you really need to take a look at a few of these.

Rolex has 904 SS, Rep has 316, NOT a huge difference.

Rolex makes in-house movements, they haven't always and have out sourced a LOT of movements in the past. I buy all my reps with ETA automatice movements.

Rolex has Sapphire crystals, ditto reps.

Rolex has 100% fit & finish score, my reps have 98% fit & finish score, the other 2% takes a real expert and a loupe to spot.

In short I'm getting 95% to 98% of the same thing a genuine buyer gets from his AD at around 5% of the price. EX: Black Ceramic Sub, Rep: $370 (real good one), Gen: $7400.

So instead of having two or three gens, paying a lot for a homeowner's jewelry rider (at one time over $1000/yr), worrying about scratches, theft..etc......

I can have a lot of reps, enjoy them and if something happens guess what? I don't give a shit and will buy another.

Watch your ass on here. I guarantee you a lot of us have a LOT more experience with genuine Rolex watches than you have. Believe it or don't.

Iyou can buy a perfect replica for $600 and after it is no longer cool you could throw it in a draw.

this is why I buy reps... I have a few gens but after wearing them for awhile they then to end up in the closet... When I think about selling to get new pieces, this alwasy comes to mind - depreciated value and I feel like I'm about to waste $$$$ again! So now I rather get a good reps that will last and when it's time for a change I don't feel so bad.

All and all it's still an expensive hobby...

really doesn't matter how or where he got the damn rolie :) but I really really understand coldis point- hitting him with his own medicine, that's probably stronger on him than anything meaningful, we could come up with.
everytime we get one of those guys here, that owns a gen, and that hate rep watches and rep collectors, and who think they speak on the behalf of all gen owners, it seems to me that their main concern isn't honestly the brands interesst, but rather that the sad little man, who finally got his gen, feels robbed of the status that comes with it, and that we, as rep collectors, are decreasing their accomplishment, of owning a gen.
if they would only stop for a second, they would see that, that is not what rep collecting is about.

I have a number of gens including a gen Rolex. (Which I purchased myself BTW) Yet I still buy reps and enjoy them. Why? Because I love watches! Plain and simple. Why spends thousands on something you can pay a few hundred dollars for and enjoy just the same?

The reason most rep owners want to have the "best reps" is not to pass it off as a gen but to just have the satisfaction that they have got a bloody good bargain!! :)

+1

Like it was stated before, 99.99% of people don't give a damn about what you are wearing on your arm... mainly only you.

Short story:

I was tie shopping and I saw a man wearing what I recognized as a Brietling watch (I am no expert, but I do know Breitling, I have 4 GENS); anyhow, I was racking my eyesight, neck, and shoulder muscles trying to follow his arm to identify the "type" of Breitling he was wearing, i.e. Super Avenger, Superocean, Skyland Avenger, etc., so I could strike up a conversation and display my "RWI knowledge."

I suddenly caught myself staring at his arm/hand every move he made... after the gentleman caught me staring , and looked at me as if I were trying to make a pass at him, I uttered, "errr, nice watch?!?" :biglaugh:

This was months ago and to this very day, I could not tell you if he was wearing a REP or a GEN... And I honestly don't care, I just simply noted that he had on a nice watch; a nice Breitling watch.

From a fellow GEN owner (Rolex and several other models); I don't know about everyone, but I like REPS because I can wear them a few times and sell them and get something else... I'm not stuck with it. I have my GENS and I feel guilty when I don't wear them and I refuse to sell them - between a rock and a hard place. REPS gives me variety - a little spice in life!

I think the guy was a jerk and had no respect. I do think their is a place for gens you have to admit the quality is their. another thing is when you put it on you have the satisfaction that you worked hard to buy your watch and that it will last the rest of your life. just my 2 cents

Yes a gen Rolex will last the rest of your life, as well as that of your son's, but it will cost you at least $100 a year for the services.

Here's a question: Why wouldn't some of these reps (not 21j Asian models!) last just as long? I'm sure we can get a local to service the ETA movements, and the SS and crystal will wear as long as a genuine Rolex.

Don't see these higher quality reps as throw-away models, not like a few years ago...........

in short: i think that those who really like watches enjoy rep too and maybe more; those who love what a watch represent (brand) hate reps. that's it.

Excellent point. More simply said..........

Most rep buyers love watches for what they are (cool, easy on the wallet, easily replaced),
Most gen buyers love watches for what they represent (status, wealth, accomplishment).

Jerk for sure, clueless even more so... as has been stated multiple times before already, having an genuine expensive watch doesn't make you more interesting, smarter, better looking, and/or certainly not richer than anyone else.(poorer after spending the dough)

No question there is a place for gen's and without a doubt the quality is there. If there is a problem they stand behind them too.

To each his own. I believe you when you say that looking at your Gen gives you satisfaction, because looking at my rep(s) gives me a similar satisfaction. You see a symbol of accomplishment, I see a symbol of "sticking it to the system".

In some ways, we are both wrong though, It's not really an accomplishment (show me someone who couldn't come up with the credit to buy a 5k watch), and "the system" could give a rats ass what watch I am wearing today...(new DJ for the record)

But mostly we are both right, since we are both happy, and that's what matters...

Excellent point. More simply said..........

I don't think that's really fair to generalize that broadly. I'm sure if this was a gen forum it would go something like this:

Most gen buyers love watches for what they are (precision mechanical wonders, made to exacting standards without regard to cost)
Most rep buyers love watches for what they'd like to represent (status, wealth, accomplishment, without regard to the quality)

Bottom line for me, people like what they like for a whole host of reasons. Nobody should really feel the need to either defend their personal preferences, or put someone else down for theirs...
