I thought I’d do a few watch reviews after spending a considerable amount of time reading and learning from this site, which has proven to be invaluable to me. It’s given me something to do over the past few months and led me my first batch of purchases.
As is my approach to most things, I believe we should leave things better than we find them and contributing back to the site and to others who find themselves in similar, yet predictable, predicaments about, “should I or shouldn’t I buy that first/next watch?” So, I’ll provide my reviews as I add to my small collection and hopefully help someone else in their journey. I have a simple rating scale that works for my own watch preferences and I’ll say this in no uncertain terms: I am not an expert in any Gen and can not adequately discern the subtleties between most Reps and Gens. I’ll leave that to others.
Because of this, I am intentionally not including comparisons to Gens in my reviews and ratings. I am absolutely comfortable with Reps that aren’t perfect. Instead, I would prioritize fit and finish, original design intent, wearability, and the overall value proposition of the Reps I purchase. These are just my collecting priorities…to each their own. Oh, to date, I am not a diving watch fan. I suppose that could change, but I really prefer the higher end sports watches, generally on stainless steel and/or rubber.
Also, since a few of my purchases were made from DHGate, YMMV!
Some background: I’ve been a thirty year gen Rolex DJ wearer…it’s been a wonderful watch and I really never thought I would need/want another watch…it was also a sentimental gift from my spouse, so it has a well deserved and earned place at the top of my favorites. Three years ago, I added an Apple Watch and that’s been my daily driver for the past few years…I viewed that as a great technology enhancement to my lifestyle and, at least until I discovered this site…, I didn’t know what I was missing!
My first purchase (AT Ryder Cup) was from Andrew at Trusty and it went very well…I have since made an additional Trusty purchase for a family member and I wouldn’t hesitate to use Andrew again for something he can best execute. That said, I think DHGate can provide a “preview” model in some cases, where a watch might be tested, or trialed by someone thinking about either a higher quality Rep or Gen. This dual Rep model works for me…others should and hopefully enjoy their own philosophies!
I had been a little hesitant to use a non TD source, hoping that the value proposition would make up for the possible quality issues and, as of right now, my four other orders have all met my expectations.
Finally, I’ll link my reviews here for each watch and add them to each respective manufacturer section of the site.
And remember: “One Rep, everyone knows the rules!”
