Your Opinion on Fantasy Watches

Man a whole lotta over-analyzing going on here and I have to say I don't care what other's might think of my watch choices or whether they like them or not the great thing about collecting watches is we are all governed by individual tastes. Simply put some people like more accurate reps some don't mind wearing fantasy reps. At the end of the day all of them are a fantasy anyway, and just reps of the gen watches most of us would like to own. I don't think (at least I hope not) that any of us get to the "stage" were we think that the rep on our arm is as good as the real thing cause the fact is no matter how much money we spent on it or how much it's modded it will always fall just a little short.

Let's see....

The whole idea of counterfeit watches is to make other people think that you have the real thing. Otherwise, if you were such the lover of good quality, inexpensive mechanical timepieces, you wouldn't care about the accuracy of the piece.

So, if you have a fantasy watch, you can't really be accurate relative to the real thing. As such, why bother with a fantasy watch.

Huh? How so?

Because people are aware of why they buy rep watches. They aren't fooling anyone other than themselves, and deep down inside they know that whether or not they project that.

My Dad was a plumber...

Good deal.

By the way, just in case you got the wrong end of the stick, it's not my dad who is the shrink. It's my mum.

As a complete aside, your response reminded me of that old joke they tell in Med School, of this story:

"A boy is rushed into the ER by his doctor dad, and tells the staff he cannot treat him because it's against the Hypocratic Oath to do so. He's wheeled into the operating theatre, when suddenly the surgeon exclaims, I can't operate on this kid! He's my son!".

Usually there's a stir amongst the Med School students and they're all looking at each other trying to figure out the puzzle. Could it be his step-dad, his long lost biological father, etc. etc.

No, the answer is simple. The surgeon is his mother...you'd be surprised how many brainiac male Med School students never guess that.

Of course, I did. :)

So which is it? A.? or B.?

This is one of those, "And just how long have you been beating your wife?" questions, where you are condemned before you answer, isn't it? :)

This is a MUCH better reply than the convoluted one I gave. And it reflects my thinking on the topic completely.

Because just as you fantasize that your rep is the real thing, so do we fantasize that our fantasy is the real brand.

Yeah, MKO8...We're all denizens of 'Fantasyland'...
To quote one Marley, B. (sorry, no Donne) "...you can fool some people sometimes, but you can't fool all the people all the time..."
As much as I've tried, I've yet to fool myself with any McRepster.
And I'm not even m'own harshest critic!

Ok...I'm the son of a plumber (who by happenstance of biology had a penis) and a Dermatologist (who, thankfully, didn't).
I used the word 'plumber' for the connotations.
So the femogistics were unnecessary...
Anyway, A.? or B.?

Don't worry. I'm sure you didn't mention your mother because it was much more humble to mention the plumber not the doc, not because I think you couldn't conceive of a woman being a doctor.

Anyway, A.? or B.?

C.

Let's move on.

C...Good call!
And to get back on topic, my mate back in Aus. just paid AU$400 to have his gen. 112 'unbranded'
To me at least, that is cool.

To return to the subject of Fantasy watches, I don't like them. Not at all.

... unless of course they're damned nice. :D

This is my GMT-Master II. Rolex never made this one, but they should have.

It's like Faux Chronos. I don't like them either. Apart from when the watch is nice.

Or when there is no way I want to slap down real cash on a joke.

I wish that last one were a fantasy watch.

I agree. It reminds me of the one and only blue-eyed person I ever met, who wore brown contact lenses (she sometimes wore green too).

There's a reverse psychology there that very few people would follow, and is all the more impressive for having tried it. ;)

Inside joke, TTK.

Like the one about the Pre-Med School student who raised his hand in physics lecture.

"Why do we have to learn all this physics stuff, since we won't ever use it to save patients' lives?"

Professor stops in his tracks, the whole class hold their breath, and the Professor looks severely at the student.

"Because Physics saves lives"

"How does it save lives??"

"It keeps the idiots out of Med School"

Ta-dum.

Every replica watch I own, I consider a fantasy watch, for obvious reasons. I am guilty of not reading this entire thread, so if this has been said already, excuse my laziness. I never thought anyone would give a crap until I joined this forum and witnessed first hand how anal collectors can be. Nothing wrong with that. In fact I learned (and still am learning) a ton about watches from those who are very particular. Only thing i really don't care for is a faux chrono in the form of, day, date, GMT. For some reason it turns me off.
