With the money people spend on reps.. I often wonder if they didn't buy their collection they could probably afford a used Sub or something..

Does anyone consider this?

As you become more familiar here you will begin to notice reps are just the tip of the iceberg for many members.

What do you mean? As in they have gens too?

For me I don't have the job to fund gen watches so I have no choice lol

i personally like having a few different rep option vs 1 or 2 gens.
if i really like the rep of a watch and the gen is affordable, i may get it.
im lovin the speedmaster moon watch. i may end up trying to find a gen of this at a decent price.

mainly because the reps cant get the sub dials right and its a major tell.
ill give this some wrist time and keep an eye out for a good deal on a gen. ive seen them go as low as $1200.

if the gen is like 10 grand.. im ok with rockin a rep of that. i do ok money-wise but im in no position to be spending 10 grand on a watch.

haha i have a friend like that. drives a lambo. has a few different subs and a hublot with a diamond bezel and a cartier santos i believe. i think his diamond bezel is tacky as hell but money dont buy taste.

he can get a sweet deal on a gen sub though. said to let him know whenever i wanted one.
doubt ill ever buy a sub.. if i did itll def be pre-owned and i just dont think that watch is worth the asking price.

Wearing a Glycine Airman 18 right now. . . But I do know what you mean, a Gen of the watches that are repped; Yes, I would. In fact I went looking for a used seamaster 300m pro when I was also looking at the Glycine. However, the prices were all higher than the Glycine. But, if it is a watch I like, then of course I would wear a gen. If I don't like it, then no I would not wear it.

Most watches aren't worth the asking price, especially now. Major brands have went from screwing us to down right bending us over and expecting us to just smile. It really is outrageous what they ask for a watch in many cases, infact it's insulting really. I mean how could any watch made of SS be worth anywhere near 10 grand?? It's not, it's all about the status and has nothing to do with the value.

Rolex used to be a favored brand of mine, however I haven't purchased a new one in a very long time. Why?? The price is a F'ing joke. Yes the watch is nice but it ain't that F'ing nice, it's not 10 grand nice, F that, it's insane.

completely agree. the good thing about buying a rolex vs most other luxury brands is it will at least hold value better.
omegas do ok too but nothing holds value like a rolex so i guess in a way... its worth it if you want it to be a investment.
if you plan on keeping the watch until you die though, there are many other watches id rather have.

i really would love a gen Uboat U1001. its by far my fav watch in a price range i could live with (3-5k used) but i bet the resale value on those later will be shit.

Personally Omega has p*ssed me off, nearly to the extent of Rolex...

SMP 300m (auto) back in the day were £2-£3k and now the ceramic and liquid metal versions have come out and they have doubled in price... Sure the coaxial movement is nice but it aint made of gold...

Would still own one tho ;)

Words can't describe the satisfaction of buying a GEN with your hard earned money.

My answer is YES for a non GEN owner. After that it doesn't really matter I feel.

Oh yes Omega is in the same boat for sure. With their no discount boutiques, give me a F'ing break. I have owned their watches for so long and bought many of them I almost feel betrayed by the brand and now that they went price insane I don't even look their way anymore.

Not everyone here (including myself) buys reps because they can't afford the gen equivalent. I have a simple rule and don't purchase a rep (or own a rep collection) if I couldn't conceivably afford the gen equivalent. Like your friend, there are people on here who also drive lambos and have gen collections worth more then what other people earn in 5years.

Personally, I enjoy researching watches and then sourcing gen and aftermarket/rep parts to build franken watches. For me it's a hobby and I wouldn't spend £6k on a gen Rollie when I can build a super franken (that's practically gen for all intensive purposes) for much less money.

I blow the money i save on cocaine and hookers.

yep. me too. i find it very satisfying to know all about the watches im buying.
i also only buy watches that i could pass off as gen. something i would probably buy and could afford. this is the main reason why i stay away from hublots and APs..
i really do like the datograph a. lange but idk that i could pull off a 30k watch.. its a beauty though...

I have a great job and can afford most gens (within reason). I do own several gens but get more enjoyment out of building watches than just buying them. I know several guys on RWI who are doctors, lawyers, presidents of large corporations etc. Its just a love for the hobby.

One of my friends here has a collection of some very nice pieces. One of his watches is being auctioned off for $150k USD. Now that's out of my price range. Lol

I do have both gen and rep. To some level, I would go for a gen when I can but I still want a bunch of rep to rotate daily. I save the gen for weekend and special occasions.

I think it's nice to own a few gens for special occasions, but the rep is just too fun with variety of choice to match with your outfit. Plus, for a daily beater gen is not a good idea anyway unless you don't care about the scratches.
