Would you be more into Quartz if they had a sweeping second hand?

I love mechanical movements, but prefer to pick up a watch and go without have to reset the time and date (hence my dislike of DW).
And accuracy to gen is low IMO also as I am more towards the overall look of a watch vs how close it is to gen, most lower end watches just don't have very good design to me.

That would be the perfect movement for that rep. But now the question is back, who can we go to to experiment with a new movement in a rep?
Yeah, I'm just sitting here, ready to send my cash to a TD who can supply me with a good quality GS rep with a smooth sweep quartz movement

and how would you tell the difference in this case....?
I was sleepwalking when i posted that! I just notice watches out in the wild and that long, janky tick of the second hand is an immediate turnoff.

this quartz op speaks of would be pretty much perfect, especially if you had the tools to change the battery yourself.

there is something super cool about flicking your wrist and seeing your watch start ticking though :)

Check out the Seiko spring drive, sweep second hand, mechanical movement regulated by a quartz feedback 'brake' mechanism. When you see one of these...it is mesmerizing!

Great thread, bigplayer! Thank you for that.
I answered with a resounding yes: I would look closer at many watches had they sweeping hands as a Quartz.
However: there is and always will be a special something about mechanical watches, craftsmanship, analogue technology etc...

absolutely, I completely agree. Mechanical watches will definitely always have a place in a market, rep or gen. But I think the place would be a lot less if both markets were able to utilize the sweeping hand quartz like the precisionist series does. It blows my mind that the precisionist has been out 5 years, and in 5 years batteries have only gotten better, yet bulova is the only watch company currently using the technology. I REALLY wish citizen would throw it in their ECOdrives since they own the tech.

I started out with Quartz, as probably many here have. I have always disliked having my watches die after a few years, and very seldom would I be motivated to get them replaced. Instead I took it as an opportunity to get another watch each time (Fossil was always my brand of choice). But that all changed when I got a Fossil about 3 years ago that was just too big, confusing dial, hybrid chrono with rotating bezel that is just very cringe worthy, and found out it needed 3 batteries if it ever died. That really turned me off from Quartz, I grew very unsatisfied, and thus began my journey into something better, and I converted into analog automatic watches. Long story short, several Seiko's and many reps later, I am in love with the sweeping hand, and prefer it over ticking anyday.

Recently I decided to give Quartz another chance, and picked up a few on sale on Amazon. Picked up a Tommy Hilfiger, a Timex, and my prized jewel of my Quartz collection a Bulova Accutron II Alpha in rose gold (I like to call it the Green Ranger watch). I'm loving the accuracy and being able to just put on and go with Quartz, I've really missed that. I have a huge watch box with a slot for 4 watches to wind, but very rarely use it. Now that I am seriously into watches and have a watch guy, I'll be taking my Quartz watches to get new batteries when they die. Sweeping second hands are a thing of beauty to see, coupled with a beautiful dial and case, it's watch nirvana. If they can make Quartz do that and prevent them from ever dying, I would definitely pick up a few more.

Great topic :).

I'd be more than in for quartz super reps with gliding second hands!

Fun fact: when I started my replica watch quest I'd originally been looking for quartz watches only. Simply because they seemed more convenient for me. No mechanical defects, no worries about setting the time if you don't use it for more than two days and not to forget: the low price!

I'd find it interesting if we could replace more complex movements (like chronos for example) with quartz movement. Recently I was looking at a Nautilus SS Chrono that had a quartz movement. And I just thought to myself: what a pity it doesn't have a gliding seconds hand on the sub dial. If it would have one then it would be absolutely worthy to make a super rep out of it.

I don't frown upon quartz at all but I wouldnt spend the amount that a quartz tag or breitling would cost. which is just a complete rip off.

As I understand, Breiting use an ETA thermocompemsated superquartz movement - accurate to +/- 12 spy.

I have one in my Sinn UX and I set all my automatics to it. (Yes, I do dive, deep and a lot)

I get the grab and go ease of a quartz but it only takes a 30 seconds to set the time on my mechanical/automatic watches.

If the quartz sweep like the Bulova Precisionist, I would not buy any more mechanical watches :hehehe:

My world just imploded!! I love to brag to everyone how awesome a mechanical watch is, but getting it serviced every few years is definitely more annoying than changing a battery every couple! I'm going to pretend I never found out about this.

The complicated movement of an automatic is what appeals to me more than it's sweeping motion

I am all ready buying quartz reps. Mainly because in a chrono you have 2 choices. A quartz or a time bomb, oh sorry, 7750. So give me a quartz with sweeping seconds and I'm happy like a pig in mud...

Like everyone today I have lots of electronic gadgets. I can get the time from my cell phone, and I always have that with me.
No the watch obsession for me is all about having a tiny machine on my wrist. It's a mechanism with springs and gears.

My dad was a watchmaker. It was the early sixties and some of my earliest memories are of crawling on the floor looking for watch parts. I never learned the skill from him, but I do remember him taking watches apart cleaning and repairing them. So for me mechanical watches are a connection with my past. A past that predates the semiconductor and the ubiquity of streaming information.

A fine watch is like the pinnacle of machine technology just before electronic gadgets took over the world.
