Winding my new DSN

3 days ago I got my new Panerai 203a rep from DSN with his "swiss" movement, and I wound it up carefully, and did so the next day, as this is my practice and have never had an issue with my self wind reps.

Just tried to wind it again and there is a resistence in the wind mechanism that feels as if I try further that it will break. I sent word to DSN about this, and would like to know if anyone has experience with this issue and how to deal with it.

Thank you, HB

It's ok now, just needed to "unwind"

Re: Issue with my new DSN

I would pop the case back off and see if there is something obviously wrong with the movement.

Failing that, I would find a decent watchsmith locally to take a look at it. 6497s aren't complicated movements and any competent watch repair place should be able to fix it.

I would ask DSN for a discount on your next watch or a partial refund. I would never risk sending a watch back to CN for a 6497 movement problem.

Good luck!

Hooligan is right, any watchsmith can work on it, do not risk to send it back.

I had this exact symptom on a used 113 I purchased. I took the case back off and slowly released all the tension in the mainspring, then wound it up again and it has been working great ever since. The only other 6497 problem I had was a loose set lever screw, preventing the stem from working properly.

I agree with the others, I would not send it back. Heck you are in Vegas, watch capital. Surely they have some decent watchmakers there. :D

Re: Issue with my new DSN

Thank you guys for the advice. When the watch has run out, I'll try again carefully, and failing that, remove the case to see whats what. (like I know), or if there is an obstruction.

If its still running then you can just let it run out until it stops and then try re-winding it,,,, worked for me when I had a similar problem with a swiss 6497 that I was winding everyday and one day wouldnt let me wind it, but it was still running since it still had some PR on it.

Re: Issue with my new DSN

After two days the watch ran out of gas, and I carefully attempted to wind it, and it wound like a charm as if nothing was wrong at all. Good to hear others experience with this as it was alarming due to this never happening before. My confidence is restored.

i have once had a screw fell out into the movement. - blocking the whole mechanism.

other then that...these movements are pretty much bulletproof. thats why i love them.

Re: Issue with my new DSN

These 6497s are bulletproof, and the 2 way postage for a 6497 to CN is more than the value of the movement itself.

I've had similar issues when a metal filing (released during CG filing) dropped into my 6497 and apparently got stuck some time later. A gentle whack of the movement restored the capacity to wind.
