Why wear a replica?

AND, ... there are some of us who'd love to own high end gens but simply can't afford them. AND, there's people like me who's on a budget (damn!) and can't spring for the higher end reps either. From personal experience buying from RWI Trusted Dealers and members, I've found "cheapie" reps that suit both my budget and my objectives; which in themselves are basically simple: "fantasy." When I wear my reps, I know what they are, and if someone asks about them, I answer honestly. (As an aside, my wife bought me a gen. Rolex DJ as a gift; I wore it for three years and NOBODY ever noticed -- except for one guy who himself was a watch collector!) As MMs said, I'm not out to fool anyone. I just enjoy the IDEA of wearing a decent rep of something I'll never, ever own as a gen. It's just a hobby, and I love it. Besides, so far (knock wood), I've had very good luck with the Asian 21j's. They've turned out to be pretty rugged.

1. It is much better spending $300 than $3k to find out you enjoy a watch.
2. Variety is the spice of life.
3. Ill have a hard time telling my daughter "no we can't go to Disneyland because daddy spent $3k on a nice Skyracer" or "daddy can you buy me a car? Sorry baby, daddy just bought a Daytona".
4. I am a man of value, ex: I dont see value in a Panerai for $6 with an eta movement when I can find a quality used gen xyz brand for around $1.5k.

If people don't like reps, then that is fine, it is their opinion but they have no place on this forum.
There are many reasons "why wear a replica": I suspect most of us fall into one or more of the following groups:
1) They want the gen but can't afford it
2) They are into watches, and can have 20 or 30 reps for the price of a gen
3) They are thinking of buying a gen and want to 'test drive' the rep
4) They want to "look flash without spending the cash" and deceive people (not many of them on here, methinks...)
5) They enjoy the process of finding the watch they want, looking at the websites, finding differences from the gen, and generally researching their watch (rather than going to an AD and saying "I'll have that one")
6) They want to learn how autos work, take them apart and fiddle with them, without ruining a £2k+ investment
7) They enjoy the hobby of modding, changing the watch to closer match the gen, or look how they want it
8) They want to exploit child labour in China (not really...)
Any I have missed?

I'm grateful for the rep business, got me to find an interest in different brands, trying new models out etc...
However most rep owners use the same excuses;
1. I can't afford a gen (but I can afford 20 reps)

3. The rep factories are not more criminal than other big companies (yeah right)
4. Nobody can tell the difference between a gen and a rep (my manager could, embarrassing like hell)
I've too got rid off most of my reps and spent the money on buying original vintage sports watches and getting them back to their original state.
Much more awarding, for people who like to fiddle around with watches, hunting for parts....
For me the rep buying is definitely over but I enjoy dropping in to the rep forums to see what brands and models are getting more popular.

Something that crossed my mind today was that there are those that look down on replica watches, yet are more than happy to go out and purchase "reproduction" furniture. Then there's reproduction artwork, prints of famous paintings... To hold replica watches in any other light than these things would be hypocritical.

i have lots of reps and you are right but here is the way i am doing it. i am 52 and my wife is 41, our daughter is 18 months old. when my wife and i are dead and gone our daughter will inherit everything we have and that includes my z series ss gmt2c, m series ss white dial daytona, my wife's z series platinum yacht master plus what ever other rolex's we own by that time. she can keep them or sell them and buy herself a car and go to disneyland. she will already have our home so she will never have to worry about a place to live.
here is my advice, buy reps and find the watches you are truly passionate about. buy gens of them, continue to buy reps of the watches that just catch your eye.

It is not to me tring to fool some one Its just a Watch Thing .You either love them or not.
This is my First Post so dont be cruel.
