I am a frugal person. I also enjoy quality items.

REPs allow me to enjoy the best of both worlds. The thought of knowing that instead of trading $6k in my right hand for a gen timepiece in my left, I can obtain a near identical copy and keep $5700+... makes me feel like a winner in the transaction.

The process that leads up to product delivery is also quite pleasurable... Beginning with a large selection, I will narrow my choices down to a few. I will spend the next several weeks to months mentally battling why this watch should be ordered next vs. another... Eventually the order is placed. Anticipation for delivery creates suspense. When will it arrive? 5-days? 2-months? Will it be seized by customs?

Then FINALLY. She arrives... In all her glory.

2-weeks later, the cycle begins again.

Many years ago I bought loads of reps from George, Josh, Trusty, Davidsen... (see my forum join date) . Almost got screwed looking for MBWs Taiwans best...
All reps looked like shit, broke eventually, and the ones I didn't throw away I sold for almost nothing.
People aren't that stupid, the ones you don't want to know to figure out you wear a rep (and have a fake personality) will be a WIS and judge you (like your boss, or business account associate)... you will eventually be found out in an embarrising way.
If customs doesn't get you first

My happiest day was when my 12 slot watch box was empty of fakes and by hard saving I started to fill it with gens instead (Speedmaster, Panerai , GMT Rolex, Daytonas...)
My kids will get them eventually, to wear or trade in with great increased value
(Imagine what they would think finding a watchbox full of fakes)

What I mean by this post guys is; sell and throw away your reps, buy a nice gen you'll treasure! You'll feel a lot better, trust me.

AND to answer the post question, No I don't wear a fake so that I don't support child labour in China or the thai/chinese mob. You guys do.

Who says we don't have gens? Anyways, you sound way too full of yourself. Nothing wrong with owning a rep.

First I'll start with this "Imitation is the sincerest flattery" C.C.Colton (1780 -1832)
now my answer to the question. Why a rep because I like the look but can't justify the cost, I'm Rolex sub nut the first one I Had was back in the eighties (god what a pile of cr*p) I'd buy a sub look a like in fact I nearly bought a $360 Invicta a while back but thought WHY when I can get the sub model I really like for under $200. So untill a main stream watch manufacturer brings out a watch that has the look and feel of a sub I'll stick with reps plus I hate quartz I've 3 2 Limits and a Rrotary (the gold plating wore off after only a year:realmad:) and all cost me around $200 each

A pair of (gen) Nikes is enough for supporting child labour in China, just knock it off.

Half of us in here have more gens than reps, it doesnt make any difference.
Wtf, how come you get it up your ass and not into your head?

I think of reps at this point as a "test drive" that i can keep. I live where I would have to travel two states away to visit the nearest Panerai dealer and a full state away to even see a Breitling. It would cost me more in gas for a round "lookie loo" trip than a rep does, plus I get to wear it around and see if it is me and something I would ever consider dropping the cash on. Consequently, VERY few people even know more brands than Omega or Rolex around here, so wearing any other rep only results in a "neat watch" comment. Gotta love Montana...nobody really cares anyhow. I'm also still on the young side and want to be positive what I am willing to save up my hard earned cash for (used gen 42mm breitling superocean is on the short list, something from Panerai is on the wish list thanks to the rep growing on me)

This shall be my first post. I think my love for watches led me to buy replicas (which also led me here :) ) since I cannot really afford a real one now without busting my ass at the moment, what better way to induldge in my love for watches by getting a rep. Besides, they almost look the same, in my time in wearing reps, nobody knows, unless I tell them. Plus, it is exciting to mod a watch to have it 99% close to the gen. The sastifaction!

ok guys no offense... just buy 10 more reps, break a plexi, drill the lugholes, upgrade the movement, buy more dials, replace cannon pin, relume and relume again, loose stuff in customs, get more pins from davidsen, and return your movements to Josh, get scammed from thai dealers.....
2-3 years later you'll realise like me how much you've spent on all that... and it's all wortless pieces of junk that (if you're lucky) you can only sell on the rep forums.
in 2007 I bought a gen rolex 1675 for 2 grand, now selling for 5000USD.
My reps for the same amount are gone and worthless.

My only reason for posting is for you guys shoudn't spend you hard earned cash on rep garbage (like I did), save and buy some genuine stuff you could treasure for yourself and your family for the rest of your life.

see you guys on the gen forums

I used to think that, but people will judge the overall finish of the watch and see its a rep. That's the key! The rep factories will never have the time to accomplish that.

I just dont understand this whole wearing a watch for image thing. I wear a watch because I like the watch, and not necessarily always because I like the way it looks. What someone else thinks of my watch is the last thing I could possibly care about. I'd gladly wear a rolex replica with the words fake in place of rolex on the dial as long as I liked the watch. If someone thinks and/or cares that what I'm wearing is fake, then I have no desire to communicate with that person, as they've already shown they make a big deal over pointless trivial bs.

Make sure you didnt buy a franken for 2 grands har har subtle irony that'd be.
And remember you are on a rep forum, as long as it'll last...

Hence the fact that this is a true "hobby" for most of us - not a true attempt at replacing a gen with a rep. Every hobby you need to spend money. If you paint you buy brushes, paint, canvases, etc... . And for what? After all, you can only sell your crappy art to your family for way less than the supplies. Or scuba diving - wow! - pay to get certified, buy a bunch of expensive stuff...and for what again? After all, you can only resell your beaten and saltwater eaten equipment for pennies on the dollar on fleabay........

I'm guessing you wouldn't "break a plexi, drill the lugholes, upgrade the movement, buy more dials, replace cannon pin, relume and relume again, loose stuff in customs, get more pins from davidsen" for your gen (hopefully none of us would). So - you're talking apples and oranges.

Sounds to me like you were one of those trying to get the gen, but settling for the rep in it's place - of course you were never happy. So, enjoy your gen and gen fora - but get back to reps for the right reason and just enjoy yourself.

It is so much fun having projects.
My Gen SMP is in my box.
It just sits.
Sit.
Sit.
Sit.
Sit.
And it does not like it.
Not one little bit.

Panman, I see your point. And honestly I am in the same boat as you. 2 years ago I bought close to $6k in reps... But that was over 20 watches. To me it was worth the "fun" of wearing different watches. It gave me the chance to test drive watches that were "close" to the real thing. Now I know what watches I do not like and the ones I love! My Omega rep convinced me to buy a gen Speedmaster. Now I am selling most of my reps for a gen Panerai. I will still own panerai reps, because now I want to tinker and make my own Franken...

It is great you have gens now, but do not judge or stereotype those who own reps.

Apart from the few guys who just want to brag about their watches calling their reps gens (and I dont see em very often in here), this is a hobby: file there, drill here, replace those hands, find a good strap, wth need new endlinks, relume that dial etc etc...
Just like tin soldiers, some love to paint them, others will buy them cos they look cool and build collections.
Some people enjoy their hobbies.
Some dont and end up criticizing other peoples fun.
My personal suggestion is to try and find your own personal source of fun where it is waiting for you. From there on you can even share. Try to live along with your own emotions instead of borrowing them.
