Why the big price difference?

I have started to look at Rolex again, thinking I would get my self a nice Explorer II, black dial. By-Tors review of this watch really makes me want to have one today.

I have previously dealed with a trusted dealer at RG. Before you flame me for talking about other dealers not being trusted here on RWI, I just want to ask you what you think of this:

The TD at RG has got an Explorer at 255 USD. This dealer has been fantastic before, I have dealt with him on many occasions.

I now want to start dealing with TD´s from RWI instead since I do frequent this forum a lot more than RG, and I think this is the best place to be. This also goes for the trusted dealers. So, after some researching I found a TD at RWI I´d like to deal with. They have got the same watch at 200 USD.

Upon asking about the price difference when talking to the TD at RG (didn´t mention who was the cheaper dealer of course), the answer I got was:
"If someone can sell this watch at 55 USD cheaper than me, than you can be sure that the movement is not new. I only sell 100% new Swiss movements".

Now, is there any truth at all in this? I have read that they all get the watches from the same factory more or less? I really want to start dealing with this RWI dealer, but at the same time I can´t stop thinking about the cheaper price...could it be a bad deal after all. Should I go with the TD at RG instead...(or even a TD at RWI selling at a higher price)...

On the other hand, why pay 55 USD more for the same watch?

So my question is: Price differences this big between dealers, are they normally just an example of different price strategies, or can it actually be a difference in quality between the watches?

Is that okay to do, I mean - I didn´t want to show links to a non-trusted dealer at RWI, but perhaps that is okay? Just dont´t want to do something wrong here :)

considering it's common to see different versions of the same watch so the only way we know for sure there is no confusion it's best if you post links.

it's okay. :)

EDIT: I personally would like to know who is stating they guarantee SWISS...

It's ok to show your links as long as you make it plain that it is not a trusted dealer.

The only dealer who can guarantee new Swiss ETA is Robert/T4D as he fits his own MVTs in gen ETA watches, the rest of them could be anything from rebuilt ETAs to a franken half clone/half ETA as we have seen recently. Unless the dealer fits his own MVTs he is relying on what the maker tells him and they lie!

Me too, but really I don´t believe that much in guaranteed Swiss, it´s just that all watches I have got from this dealer has been really really good. So when she states that her movements are new (be it a clone or gen) compared to the cheaper ones, it makes me start to think....what if..

On the other hand, RWI is my place to be nowadays, that goes for the TD´s as well. So, Silix seems to be a good dealer. Question is, will this watch at that price give me what I expect.

I have perhaps payed too much all the time up until I found Silix

not the same model... kings is the newer version with the engraved rehaut.

Thanks for the info. Now I have to find a TD at RWI who can get me the same watch :)

yes and i do not recommend the silix version as it has the incorrect hands too.

good luck on the hunt and remember what col. said... take what dealers say with a grain of salt when it comes to swiss movements.

EDIT: if you want to be very accurate by the way (i used to be really into the exp II)... have a modder sand off the rehaut engraving and install a gen crown. You got yourself a super-rep.

Now Silix tells me that they have the old version on stock, but that they can get the new one with the engraved rehaut. How can I spot the incorrect hands?

Thanks, of course I want to be as accurate as possible :)
By "sand off", you mean remove it totally? Shouldn´t it be there?

Could be me lost in translation...

T dial is a tritium lumed dial. check out below the 6 marker.... instead of "Swiss Made" it says, "Swiss-T < 25"

I said to sand off (yes remove it totally) the rehaut engraving because it's never aligned and doesn't look that great anyways.

Stick with the black dial too.

I´m learning a lot here. But, if you sand off the engraving, doesn´t it scream "rep" then? I mean the gen has the engraving? Or not?

Thanks! Okay, the engraving is probably something I´d get rid of then, and the crown. Well, change the crown of course :)

So far Sweden has been a good country for rep collecting. Three watches has been shipped from China and arrived at my door after seven days. No problems at all with customs.

Switzerland though, that´s another story!
