I went shopping today and saw a 104, a TT DJ, and a PO on people in my short time out. I automatically thought, okay, gotta be fake. Why am I trained to think that way instead of thinking, wow, nice gen Pam or nice gen Omega?

I figure if I think this way other WISsies might think that of me when I wear my watches, gen or not.

Do you automatically size up the watch as real of rep when you spot one in the wild?

It all depends. I used to think every Rolex, PAM, Breitling, etc. I saw in the wild was a gen.... until I found out about this place.

Definitely a lot more reps out there than we think.

Not on,y can I not tell if anyone's watches are fake. I can't get close enough to them most of the time to even tell what brand they are. Last two people I asked if they were wearing a Daytona/breitling actually had a homage fossil/brand I never heard of.

How to tell if it is a fake "they" are wearing.........

Easy, and it always works , here is how : Remove your watch, put it in your pocket. Now go up to the chap in question and ask for the time. So he tells you the time, good. Now comment on how nice his watch looks. Just "how good it looks", no other words. If he responds, well, it is a Rolex, Omega, Pam, whatever,..... then it is a fake. If it is a gen, all he does is tell you the time, stares at you, and watches you walk away. Gen owners do not advertise their watch brands, and don't trust strangers near them asking for the time. The higher you hold your chin up, the more gen you look. AND, The more gen your watch looks. "YOU" are always the 'dead give-away'. ...........

yeah, happened to me, twice. I said nice Sub. He said huh???? I took a closer look and then I said, ooops never mind, I thought it was a different watch.

I'll do that "hey do you have the time/nice watch trick next time"

I rarely acknowledge the watch I am wearing, rep or gen when being complimented.

Thats because mostly everyone is wearing a rep. These gen prices are getting so out of hand. The last watch i bought was a omega speedmaster. I paid 3200 for that. My most expensive watch i bought was a datejust i paid 3900 for it in 1993. A new datejust 36mm now goes for 6k theres no way i buy that.

In nyc I see so many fake rolexes its hilarious. They say to never judge a book by it's cover but in nyc if you don't look like you can afford a rolex you most likely cant. I am talking about the wanna be thugs/etc. On the same hand I have seen a lot of gen watches as well. I have yet to see some SERIOUS watches but I do see a lot of tags, brets, ebel, etc. I have seen quite a few fairly expensive 20k+ gens on people but it's been fairly rare. My watches rarely get complemented as I don't really have them hanging out for all to view and I prefer the low key way of things. Rep or gen no attention is the best attention for me.

When I see a nice watch I think "hey, that guy has a kickass taste in watches", I don't think to it as gen or rep, might be gen, might be rep, I don't know till I don't have a closer look. I don't consider the way somebody dresses or is groomed a tell.

Sounds like you haven't meet any non WIS gen owners, the vast majority that buys a watch for bragging rights. There's even a saying: "How can you tell how much their watch costs? Wait 5 minutes and they'll tell you"

One way to tell is if the bracelet isn't sized. Most folks with GEN watches dont have it sliding up and down their arm. Rolexes are easier to tell for me. But if you can't get close , there's no way to tell.

Just this evening I went out again and saw a SMP blue wavy dial and couldn't tell if it was real or not. I kept staring at it inconspicuously to see the He valve location and the AR, but couldn't make head or tail from it. I didn't feel like striking up a convo with the guy about his watch.

For those who say they can spot a fake from just fleeting glances, I don't know how you can do it. I need a good close look at the watch before I pass judgement. Generally I am pretty good, but the new super reps such as the PO's, the Pams, I'm lost.

You might know the places which I'm talking about. Once in the Richmond Aberdeen mall food court, I was waiting for food and a mid 20's guy standing next to me was wearing a Graham chrono with a rubber strap. I immediately thought that it's a rep because of the rarity of the watch and the way that kid was dressed.

Another time I was at the BBQ pork place in the Richmond Superstore mall lining up for food (humm a common theme) when an early 30's fellow came in wearing a IWC chrono like the Topgun and I again immediately thought of it as a rep just because you don't see a Chinese dude wear that watch very often.

Now there are a lot of rich folks living here and those might very well be gens but I guess I am one of those who see if the watch matches the wearer and form my first impression by that.

How to tell.........

Having grown up, lived, worked, been, and dealt with folks who would wear all kinds of expensive gens that most guys here only found out about recently, hell, the big tell is the person, always the person. Not his clothes, cars, taste in food or drink. How a person conducts himself is ALWAYS a tell. If you don't know how to size up the wearer, you can't accurately tell. Most gen owners conduct themselves like they really can afford a gen or a couple of gens. They are mostly quite and refined even when drunk. Even in the company of turds. Those who brag about their gens today, will be seen in a pawnshop hacking their watches the next day or month. They never deserved them anyway. It is the person first, the watch comes after that. Would you buy a genuine Gold Sub from a guy playing loud rap in a purple low rider for half the price even if everyone around you would vouch for the guy. No never. Most "REAL" gens are with the nicest people around. And that includes that real nice rapper neighbor I have. He never fails to wave, each and every time. Always.

That's exactly right cause when you buy a high end watch like rolex they size it for you on the spot. You don't leave a rolex dealer with a watch that doesn't fit perfect.

Sent from my iPad cause I'm to lazy to sit at a computer.

I've meet a few people who like to wear their watches really loose. I have this friend, it pisses me off every time I see his damn gen Tag, I kid you not, he was sitting at the table with me and his watch head went on the inside of his wrist  Offered to resize his bracelet few times but he likes it like that :picard: I swear next time he gets drunk at a party I know the perfect prank, I'll steal two, hell I think I can get away with three links from his bracelet :hehehe:
