Why are Quartz not recommended?

I wonder if the OP is referring to the fact that many quartz reps are looked down upon because they cut corners elsewhere besides the movement. There are certain reps that use the same case, xtal, etc but many get other downgraded parts as well.

He also might be talking about how people look down upon certain gen quartz models. For example buying a Tag quartz for more than a grand. It doesn't make sense when the movement is probably worth 50 bucks. Seems like you are just paying for a brand name then.

Quartz watches in general are great though. I always know I can grab my quartz, solar, atomic G-shocks and head out the door quickly. They also take a beating

Great discussion. If I want a cheap rep that will serve me for few years, is a quartz more likely to serve my purpose I am looking to buy a cheap Rado Jubile. Thanks for your opinion.

This is why I love this forum! So much good info and feedback. Which quartz reps would be considerd the best??? It would be nice to have a list of top 5 or 10 of he best quartz reps. Judging purely on close to gen looks...

It would be a great starting point for those who want a nice rep but can't afford to spend 300+. Seen some quartz under $100 but question is how nice do they look? Or close to gen so that an average person couldn't tell the difference??? Most watch reviews on this site deal with the higher end reps and not much about best bang for buck watches.

I would be very interested in this also. Also, if there was no second hand, a quartz watch without a sweep would still look good! I know there a gen Pateks that don't have second hands..

I have a friend who bought a Rollie Sub rep in Thailand or someplace and wore it for a month or so and then wrecked the movement. I suspect he stripped it setting the time when the date was about to change. I didn't know but he then borrowed the similar watch he had given his son and managed to strip it too. He had a Big Birthday so I bought him a Rollie Day-Date rep and it lasted 2 weeks before he wrecked that too. Moral: some people are just born for quartz watches. He is one of them. I was told to never set the time backwards on a mechanical watch and always set the date to the day before the actual date, then set the time forward until the date changes to the right date and then set the time for a.m. or p.m. I'm not sure in analog quartz watches work the same way.

I'm just the opposite

As a kid i loved watches, but every quartz watch i WA given would stop whenever i strapped one on my wrist. Sometimes after several hours, some within minutes. My mother always had a difficult time with anything with batteries a well. Her digital cameras, cordless phones, cell phones, etc always had issues.

I was forced to choose mechanical watches as they were the only ones that i wouldn't stop. The quartz watches would start up on their own after i removed them. Anyone else ever experience this? I haven't had this issue in adulthood, not sure when that changed.

Are you related to AHW's sister?

A good quartz starter rep would be a Tag Heuer Formula 1 Chrono at around $140 or so. This rep is practically indistinguishable from the gen, the only real giveaway is the second hand on the rep is a mm or so shorter.
The rep even uses the same ETA movement (G10.711) and at approx. 1/10th the price of the gen.
Check out the TAG rep forum, there are some good reviews of the F1
Good luck with your endeavours.

Pictures of F1

Sorry for not getting back sooner, Since I last posted here I have picked up a couple of F1 chrono's:

I bought this genuine F1 off ebay for a really good price
View attachment 18911

This is a rep that I recently purchased from Watch International
View attachment 18912
This is an updated model with none of the "tells" of the earlier model. Notice how the second hand is longer on this version

This is my newest rep of a 2012 F1
View attachment 18913
The 2012 gen's no longer use ETA movements and now use RONDA quartz movements. This is probably the most accurate rep of the new line of F1's IMHO

Each of my reps actually use the same movements as their gen counterparts so all functions operate in exactly the same way.

Can I ask what you paid for that black formula 1? That is the best replica I have ever seen. Date font sucks but everything else looks good. Also interested in where you got and what you paid for that f1

Where did you get the 2012 f1 ? And how much did it cost? Does it have the 1/10th sec function? I almost ordered one of thos from watch eden it would be very nice if you answer me these questions...
