Why are Quartz not recommended?

After going through the 3rd watch of movements - 21j, 6497, and another 6497, they've all become broke and it's money that has gone down the drain.

My brother has a Breitling Quartz movement watch, and it runs just amazing. However, I see people stating that a Quartz movement for a Tag is cheap and not recommended. Any reason for this?

Don't know who you're listening to.
Most if us have quartz watches and respect/appreciate them for what they are - cheap, accurate and reliable.
The only real objection to quartz around here is to buying a quartz rep of a gen that isn't made in quartz.

I know that quartz is reliable but i too got the impression it was looked down upon for a rep. Dont know much about movements so learning but thought it was due to the fact the hands dont move in a sweeping motion like the gen so a easy give away it's a rep no???

Avak101, how long did those watches last u before breaking? I too am concerned about my watches breaking... Most of them are automatic, one is high end TAG 7750 from TD. Paranoid how long they will run without issues.... I would like to hear more about this topic as well.

BTW- sorry to hear your watches broke:cry: its no joking matter. Our reps mean a lot to us. I love my reps more then the gen. Couldnt u get them fixed???

21j - 3 weeks
6497 - 3 months
6497 - 6 months

I could get them fixed, but the two 6497s require a new movement. This costs around $50 for a 2nd hand movement. To get it shipped to a member here is around $15. They're charging around $40 to replace the movement. They also mention that these pieces and other pieces of the mechanics can break easily. It seems like it's better to salvage the watch for around $60, and just get a new reliable watch instead. Forking out $105 to get the watch repaired, in my opinion, is a waste of money?

What do you think?

What!!?? That's so short! How much did u pay and which watches? Does this mean we need to stay away from 21j and 6497?? Please your feedback RWI pros. Also I would leave the advice on fix or salvage to the pros as well.

Nothing wrong with quartz!
Remember, most gen TAG Heuers are quartz which is an advantage of not being called out if someone sees the seconds hand tick. And most TAG Quartz reps are really nice! Dependable, cheap, and easy fix. I have a watchmaker that can source quartz movements and do movement swaps. I rather get the Quartz instead that an 7750 due to the fact of the cost of overhauling a 7750, which is around $250-300.

To each its own.

Quartz is of the devil!! It will steal your soul and cause boils on your skin...other than that they are fine movements

It's not the watches - its you.
The 21J movement though cheap is known to be quite robust.
And the 6497 is considered one of the most fool-proof out there.
In my many active years here I've known Pam nuts who have dozens of 6497s and I can't remember any of them mentioning 2 dead 6497s ever - let alone 2 dead in 6 months.
You're either the unluckiest guy on the planet, or you are doing something wrong and tearing them up.
Try a quartz Tag or Cartier (both make many gen quartz models) and see how it goes.

$300 to service a 7750 that's a cost of a new watch...

But there is a certain beauty of the mechanic watch you don't get with quartz. Fine craftsmanship, the art of mechanics as a science, knowing that regular service will make it last a lifetime (I have an Omega from 1938, just had it serviced and runs fine), and the sweeping seconds hands. Mechanical movements are the quintessence of fine swiss watchmaking, while quartz is symbolic of cheap mass produced watches.

Quartz are also hassle free, no winding, resetting time (with the exception of daylight savings and dead batteries) They just don't have the soul of a well engineered intricate mechanical movement.

I was wondering the same thing.. I was looking to get a 7750 movement Day-Date and it runs about $330 from pure time..would the quarts version be a better buy?

There is no 7750 day date and I've never seen a quartz one either so don't know what you're talking about.

Re; the OP. You are either doing something really wrong with your 6497 or you are buying crap reps with really bad low beat 6497 movements and I'm not even sure who sells those anymore. Either that or you are the unluckiest guy in the world. It's almost impossible to break them.

"DayDate" refers to the Rolex model of the same name.
It is not repped in quartz (at least none of our TDs would admit to having it) and would never run a 7750 movement as it has the seconds running from the center.
The watch you linked is a Tag Carrera Calibre 16. You may find it in quartz if you ask the TDs (not sure the subdial layout would work). But as the gen is not offered in quartz, it'll scream fake.

I think you need at least one Quartz movement, nothing like having a handful of automatics and only one watch winder (or none at all). At least i know i can always grab my breitling quartz without having to set the time if Im in a hurry out the door.
