Who can the RWI reps fool?

Even people who know what they are looking for will hardly get a good enough look at a watch on your wrist to begin to know if it's real or not. Try it for yourself... unless it's a quartz Rolex or the like, you'll be surprised how little you can see when looking at someone else's wrist - even when you're trying.

I'd say that you chances of being called out is really slim IF you look the part. One time I was on a South American cruise and I was wearing a cheap TT Datejust. My table mate who was a Rolex salesman pointed out that I was wearing an expensive watch whereupon I told him that it was a fake. He grab hold of my wrist and took a closer look and declared that it was real.

I think the people on this board are extremely knowledgeable and can tell a gen from a rep without too much trouble. The general public have no idea of what a gen look like. If you look the part of being able to afford an expensive watch, you will have no problem IMHO.

BTW. I didn't wear my Datejust when I go on shore excursion because I was afraid I may be robbed for wearing my "Rolex". I worn a Citizen Eco Drive which is a much better quality watch than my rep. I thought that was hilarious.

well, as far as rep vs gen goes, its really kind unfair to fool someone who doesnt know what to look for. Thats kind of like taking a rabbit out of a hat in front of a 7 year old girl. As far as quality, well, even someone who doesnt know what to look for can spot bad quality. That's why i sent my Cartier back. I saw glue residue beneath the bezel. Didnt take me long to figure out how cheaply it was made. You can easily deduce its a rep since gens arent made like that

Apart from the obvious, for instance if you let someone handle a watch with non-functioning sub dials, or with spelling mistakes on the back (they are out there! Monaco Concept reps as an example), then a watch will fool almost as many people as you can fool.

I do take some pride in my appearance, and my manners, and while I was unemployed a few years ago a lot of people took offence when they asked what I did, and I told them I was unemployed, as they thought I was trying to have them on. I had to pretend to be a lawyer on one occasion as one chap was adamant that I couldn't possibly be unemployed, and that I was mocking him by saying I was. It was the only way to calm him!

Being a regular in a few pubs as well, people have often mistaken as the owner or manager.

So I think, people probably would assume my watches are real, especially those that know me, as it's no secret that I treat myself to extravagant purchases if I like something, and there's anyway of affording it (without getting into debt though, I've never even had a debit card). People that know me know do know that I collect replicas though, and I'm honest with anyone that expresses interest.

I do know people with genuine Rolexs that wear a replica during the week and the genuine only when they're out.

I must seem much older than I am though, as I really don't know how anyone could mistake a 21 year old as the owner of a hotel, or as a lawyer.

I would like to point out that I don't set out to project the image of being someone I'm not, I'm just happiest in a suit, and I appreciate nice items. I have now branched out slightly into wearing Safari Suits on the hottest days (oddly I get a lot of traffic to my website from people searching for safari suits. I really should start selling them). I'm not sure what image that projects. This is me anyway

If I had my way suits would be standard dress for all.
I'm really just vaguely Victorian.

P.S. I didn't set out to make such an unusually long post (long for me anyway), I just don't like to leave anything out, for fear of being misunderstood.

Fear????!!!! There's no fear. Why get afraid of some schlock behind a counter. What are they going to do? throw you in jail :)

Okay... maybe "fear" was the wrong word. How about "anxiety about getting called out in public"? You might be different, but I am fairly certain that a majority of people would be at least a little embarrassed to be exposed as wearing "a fake watch" in an AD.

Oysterquartz were made in the 70's. Yes, most people will only get a fleeting glance at first, but the double take will be a scrutinized look. Still no fear if you are wearing a good rep.

Go out into public where there are a lot of people -- a mall, a sporting event, a concert, etc. -- and try to look at people's watches without gawking like a pickpocket. If you recognize the brand, let alone the model, it's probably because you are intimately familiar with that particular watch type. Most people don't hold their wrists in a position where you get a "scrutinized look", and if they do, it won't be long enough for you to really get more than split second glance from 5+ feet away. Can you tell the difference between a Citizen and a Pulsar and a Seiko and a Fossil? Most of the time, I can't unless I can get a good enough (and long enough) look to actually read the dial. I certainly rarely get a good enough look at a Sub to see if the crown guards are the right shape or if the pearl looks bad.

My point is that it's going to be very hard to quickly recognize a rep at a glance even if you know what you're looking for. Even the worst people on this board are still better at recognizing reps than 99% of the general public... and probably 85% of the AD sales people. Plus I find that a vast majority of people I know who have gen Rolexes, Tags, Brietlings, Omegas, etc. just went to the store with their money and bought the prettiest one that caught their eye. Even if they OWN the exact model of the rep you have, they STILL probably wouldn't begin to know what the gen vs rep differences are.

If that is the case then, then why bother with reps in the first place. Just go out and wear the Citizen, the Seiko, the Invictas then. If fact, I am wearing my Citizen right now. I currently ride my bicycle to work now (instead of the motorcycle) and it is the only reliable watch (other than my gens) that I can trust to all the bumps and vibrations on the road without fear of a screw or lug nut falling out of the case. That happened to my B&R, my Sub, my Bvlgari, my Cartier, but never to my Citizen or my gen Omega.

That's a valid point, if you just like the style. Case in point: Invicta Speedway.

Why not just get this instead of a rep Daytona? Do you really want that little crown so bad? I would. :) It's not just about the general style for me.

that's because, deep down inside, we all want to be part of the glamourous life and pretend in the make belief world that we own a gen when it is really a rep.

a big tell for me is that if you come rollin up in a 1982 ford escort wearing a Daytona its pretty much a give away. might want to try a rep Seiko instead.

Here are my 2 incidents :

1) Mate likes my link 16 faux chrono, takes it off, examines it, contends its an original. When I tell him its a rep he says yeah I though so, the finishing on the back wasnt so good. The finish on the back is the actually the best part of the watch, haha. The faux chrono's werent tested ;)

2) Mate who recently bought a gen Carrera as a pre wedding purchase gushed over mine and tried it on even. Classic. Didnt have the heart to tell him.

3) At a party 2 weeks ago another mate noticed and asked if he could take a look. Lots of oohs and aahs for the caseback display :)

Mind you all of these guys arent informed, some are moneyed and would buy an exotic gen at some point... not me (if I can afford it, of course I would).

I think you'll be surprised by the amount of genuine watch owners, who don't drive super luxury cars. I've seen hundreds of men (and women!) who have a Rolex on and are sitting inside a Mercedes or a BMW. But then I've seen genuine watch owners drive a Mazda or something like that!
