Who can afford a gen?

This might belong in another thread, but what people consider "being able to afford a gen" likely differs greatly from person to person and is highly subjective.

Someone might have $60k in credit card debt, but have $4k available balance on one of the cards and think, "I can afford that PAM base I've always wanted." Meanwhile they barely make the minimum payments and will either pay off that watch for the next 15 year or file bankruptcy down the line.

Someone else might live in a tiny, shitty 1 bedroom, roach infested apartment in a shady part of town. Drive a beat up clunker, but want that Rolex sub and finds a way to finance it through the AD at 21% interest.

Who knows???

Me? I could likely swing another gen, but I'd rather invest for my future (and my kid's). Sure I could take out a home equity loan and fill my lust for a BUNCH of gens, but I'd rather not. I carry ZERO debt aside from my mortgage and two car loans. The mortgage just started (2 down, 28 to go  ) but I've had a bit of appreciation and I put a nice chunk of money down, so I've got some equity. I also pay extra each month as owning a home outright has got to be one of the best feelings in the world (IMO). The cars will be paid off in the next year or so. Even though that Lexus or Mercedes is calling my name, I'll drive my paid off car for a year or so after it's paid off and sock that money away.

So I guess I could afford a lower end rep fairly easily & pay in cash (low end Rolex, PAM, nice Omega, etc). But to afford a Patek or three - I'd have to dip into investments or a home equity line.

Considering that, I guess you'd have to put me in the camp that really can't afford another gen and that is why I have purchased a few reps. I LOVE watches and this is the only way I can really have the collection I want (at the moment). For the time being, I'll enjoy the gen that I do have and a handful of reps until I can purchase that next gen I really have my eye on (I have a 112 fund). I might purchase another rep or two, but I'm kind of in "un-load mode" right now so I can fund it. It is likley gonna be a PAM, so all my strap purchases are warranted as they will be put to good use on the reps AND the future gen. :D

I make decent money & owning a gen or two wouldn't raise too many eyebrows (my friends do think the reps I own are gens and who am I to burst their bubble? ). I'm sure some here make a ton more than me and I'm sure I make a good bit more than others, it really comes down to priorities. I want to be able to play golf when I want, open a nice bottle of wine most nights, smoke great cigars when I feel the urge, go to dinner with my wife and kid-o, etc. Those things mean a little more to me than picking up that next gen at the moment.

@Klink-
I publicly apologize, as I misunderstood your intent.
I did not intend to defame or debase the brand, just randomly selected it as one of the plethora of makers who begin with another company's calibre.
It doesn't mean I think those watches are of poor quality; it is just one of my funny little quirks. I have actaully been a fan of DeWitt case and bezel treatments.

Again, I apologize for misunderstanding you, and I'll simply pop another cold one and lurk next time I feel (errantly) like popping off.

'DeWitt' was not posted with any correction in mind.. it is just that DeWitt happens to be a favorite of mine, and of my son..

we both have DeWitt reps.. a bit more affordable than the gens in our household.. lol

Cheers,

Klink

Okie Dokie:

I spent $250 dollars on a gen swiss army watch. I wear it every day. It is a quartz. I am a home inspector and I scratch the hell out of any watch I wear.

I spent 2k on a gen tag for my fiance; because she deserved it. awwww

Other than that... all rep for me. I love the reps, I think they are art. The fact that they can take an existing watch and copy it so precisely is amazing to me.
I also like when people think I have the cash to just splurge on a gen. Technically, I suppose I could but I also think it's a waste of money.
I think if I was going to buy a gen... 2k would be my limit.

I saw an Omega something.. it had a small blue dial and it was a stainless watch. I liked it... but just kind of plain. It was on sale at an AD for 1200 after tax which I thought was a very good deal. It was something like 40% off plus an additional 20%. Needless to say I didn't buy it.

I just think that for a lot of us it is priorities. I enjoy my reps and I understand people spending considerable amounts of money on a nice gen. I honestly do not have any problem understanding this. For me I have to pick where I want to put my money. I would love to have a nice gen watch collection, but I put my money in precision rifles. I just finished one that I have always wanted and it will be back from the 3rd and last gunsmith when I get back on the beach this time. I won't be buying jack for the next 30 to 45 days, much less a $5000- watch. This is why I love the option of owning reps, it allows me to feed the watch sickness and enjoy other pursuits.

I'm going with 6-10k because I like the two-tone datejust and I believe it costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $7500. For under 6 grand I'd be looking at an Omega sports diver watch.

No matter how wealthy I was, I don't think I would spend big money on Genuine watches, when you can get a piece almost as good for 5% of the cost. Just because someone is wealthy, doesn't mean they need to be reckless with their money. I can think of way more things I would rather spend my money on. Like vacation houses, fast cars, travel, etc. Maybe some high-end escorts... You know, the necessities.

But not a watch.

Just my .02.

I could easily afford a Gen Concord C1 or an AP ROO and found myself almost pulling the trigger on both a couple of months ago. But whats the point? Especially for someone as fickle-minded as myself. Why have one woman, when you can have it all? Well, almost the same rationale. This hobby is FANTASTIC! If not for RWI, I would never have imagined myself ever owning that many watches...EVER! I love watches, I just love em. I know nuts about the mechanics. It's just a simple innocent love for a chunk of steel sitting heavily on my wrist.

Your point is a good one, but only really true for mid range gens like Rolex, Breitling and Omega.

Once you get up into the realms fo Glashutte, Patek etc... the fit and finish is far superior to any replica.

I guess also it depends whgat you're interested in, plenty would consider spending big money on a car to be reckless, whereas some would quite happily go and buy 5-6 top end watches and have a average but decent car.
