Those are the American Optical ones, which, in theory, are the original ones.

I have vintage ones that I bought in July 1990 (so I guess production date could 88/89) during my glider club days. Never actually finished the license, but at least managed to log around 100 solo hours between 1990 to 1994, most in Grob and a few in S.-Hirth one-seaters. I'll see if I can find them and post a few pics... 😆

Yes, correct. I had to refresh on the history, but that is absolutely true. AO was the first USAF contractor to supply them for aviator personell issue in the 1960s. RE joined them not before the 80s. Both are built to the same spec...

I found my mine:

Back then, I was too young (in my late teens) to realize or appreciate how incredibly well built they are. 100% American made during the Reagan years. 🇺🇲🦅 And I can absolutely tell if I compare them to my mostly Asian-made Hugo Boss or Puma frames. 😆

I really enjoy the quality, bracelet has the quick swap system, the main issue I have is that it like 20+ s a day :s
I mean alternative is a ZF Mark XX with a very accurate Miyota, but a loud rotor. Pretty sure you went the right direction.
