In before wat :)

The secret phrase is: "That's a nice watch. I'm thinking of getting one just like it."
The counter sign is: "From the forums?"

Jeez, and I thought the secret phrase was a punch in the face. No wonder that guy was pissed.

Kinda funny story.

Does not really show the OP in a particularly good light though.

Why did he feel an urge to embarras his freind's boyfreind? It was not like the boyfreind tried to sell him anything. Other motives??

Sounds like you live in a world everyone has to show off in one way or another.

Sounds slightly pathetic to me.

So let me get this straight... You're on a rep forum, presumably have at least one rep yourself, but you feel the need to rain on somebody's parade for wearing a rep....which you yourself must surely do also. Why?? Either you're ok with reps or you're not.

Well i am totally ok with the reps as i am collecting them...

I am not ok thought with the people that are trying to pass their reps for gens just to show off and even more i am not ok with people like him, that when i give them a compliment about their watch they return to me with that costed a lot of money phrase... Did i asked you about the price??? And when you are asked is that a rep dont deny it cause if you do deny it, then you want to fool me and in the particular case he couldnt.

He was lucky enough that i am not a show off like him cause i would have exposed him when the ladies where in front, and i would like to see his face again in that case...

He could have accepted it was a rep when i asked, he could have told me also when the ladies left without asking him and even better he couldnt come up with the answer that is expensive when i just said nice watch... We could have a nice chat, but the only thing he wanted was to come to show off to a company of total strangers and his girlfriend...

I assume generally people love to show off, im fine with that.
However Im not ok with people who show off to an extent of nearing arrogant, the more when one do not have the substance.
I personally will not pass a rep as a gen to a stranger.

Paparas is right to this point..If someone compliments your watch you say thank you..If he wears something you like you can say also nice watch etc...
But man that wasn't right..Hey nice watch!!OOOOO thanks it costed like 2K..I am rich!!Also show off!!!
This is an everyday story in our country..People want to show off a lot and wear t-shirts with the brand name all over or Rolex(gen or rep doesn't matter in this case) just to show off..
It really bothers me..I know guys who like Rolex and this kind of attitude makes them not to buy one..I say to them: "if you really like buy the D@m Sub and F the others..."

I had some comliments about my Rolex or Omega but for example, for my Panerai never..

One guy with that kind of attitude had a lughole sub, about 1999-2000 range, he couldn't believe i was wearing also (my BK one) and said like 100 stupid things but couldn't call me out, luckilly not a Rolex Wiz...I almost made him feel uncomfortable with some comments, ooo why your bracelet is so loose, look at mine and man, so many scratches,Rolex don't scratch so easilly(total lie i know but he should be more gentleman..)

I would just keep discreet. When asked and when getting the answer.

When I hear of someone making a fuss like this, I unfortunately end up looking down on them.

In this case both of them.

Gen watch forums as rep forums can be equally arrogant, only in different ways.

His reply about "it was expensive but worth it" was arrogant. It's funny that he had no idea who he was trying to pull that on.

I always smile big and politely say thank you VERY much if someone compliments my watch. Why offend someone who just paid you a compliment? Such a douche bag thing to do.

OP was indeed nice about the way he handled it, I don't think it was his intention to show off. Most of us like RWI because we are a cool community, unlike others who like to have pissing contests without really knowing or taking the time to know the innards of a timepiece.

If dude would have been humble, he would have at the least made a connection to here if he hasn't already, and possibly learn about the positive side of reps. I actually think it's ok to get them from their high horse, it's puts in their mind a bit of insecurity and helps them save themselves from a really embarrasing moment. Imagine the same conversation but it's his boss or a client... Why lie? or be arogant? It clearly shows your character or lack thereof...

Back to lurking and learning...

I would actually say that. But most may just probably reply, "What year was that made?" and thought it's a gen numbering system or something. :biglaugh:

Yeah, I would have been fine with him saying it was real, I don't really care about that, but when you start talking about how much you paid for it, that is too much.

Thinking about it now, if I meet someone who can call out the tells of a franken, I would be more thrilled to have met him. It's like finding a kindred spirit brother! :)

Nice! I also was fortunate to visit it and it was one of the nicest places! Very different from where I came from.

I just came back from the replica stores here, looking around and trying to study various models. Then I chance upon a businessman I know checking out the new sub Cs. I was about to say hi but he totally ignored me, handed the dealer back the sub C, then left as if he didn't see me. Well, that tells me a lot. It means he has been wearing reps all those years maybe..

If I was in his situation, I would definitely say hi, then invite him to check the rep together. That way, I can say that I was studying it and try to mix it with my gens. Totally avoiding the other person says you are ashamed of being there even if you can say that you're there for the sake of "research". Oh well...
