I'm in management with a Fortune 500 company. Funny thing, a female coworker has been eyeballing my PAM and my rolex. The other day she asked me if the rolex was real. I asked her what she thought and she said she couldn't tell if it was or not. She then asked "if you have a rolex why did you buy the other (PAM) watch?" I just told her I'm a watch nut and I would own 20 watches if I could. It's funny that some people don't notice and others get a little obsessed with what you're wearing.

If you don't think people are looking at your wrist and your suit, sizing you up, you must have missed the 80's in the business world... Remember the old drill: Wrist, manicure, suit, teeth, shoes pretty much in that order.

Shoes...then wrist. The crappy intern fwads always get a real nice watch for graduation...but never pay two shits to take care if their shoes... the real ballers rock a shine that will blind any normal person. Even if you're sporting a perfect rep... your shitty shoes are always a true tell.

I would have asked her if her tits were real. :). I am an attorney (corporate restructuring and commercial litigation). I wear reps to work, but I do try to keep the low key, no gold AP ROO's. I like to stick to a work rotation of two or three good "super reps"with gen equivalents costing less than $10k. Most people I work with don't notice and don't care and would assume I was wearing a gen anyway. If I went to work with a gold ROO or Nautilus, the one or two watch guys I work with would notice and ask me how I acquired it. I don't want to have that discussion, so I don't wear those types of watches to work. Those are reserved to meetings out of the office and weekends.

lol not this thread again. Flood gates will open up soon.

Before they do - short answer, if your into reps, and you like this hobby, where your reps and where them proud no matter what you do and where you work.

It's fine to say wear whatever you want and don't worry what any one else thinks, but that really depends on what you do. I work with a partner that wears a shitty rep of a Cartier bb, and if he did ever meet with a client that knows watches, I think it sends the wrong message. In my view, i am selling my legal services and people are hiring me based on first impressions. I can easily see clients being turned off by a lawyer with a fake watch--because if your watch is "fake" what else about you is fake. I personally don't judge people by the watch or their wrist and could care less if a watch is gen or rep, but other people do care about these things and i cant afford to bet my income on what other people think or believe.

Then I'm screwed. About the only shoes I wear are highly polished army boots, the real ones, I buy them on base. I even wear them with a suit.

I have been told that it is a loot that works for me; but, in truth, I do it so that I don't twist my ankle at some inopportune moment. I have messed them up so badly that I am at risk of injury just by wearing shoes.

Army boots are exception. They can pull anything off.

If you're in a field where image counts—and many are—then presentation isn't just about ego, it's about trust. There are actually some decent job leads that take this kind of thing into account, especially for overseas roles.

I’d suggest starting right here, where you can find solid options that emphasize professionalism and first impressions.

Interesting perspective. I guess it really does depend on the industry—first impressions can carry weight, whether we like it or not. It's smart to be aware of how these details might be perceived.
