What is a Franken?

For me a Franken is down to the movement and casing
Just adding a genuine datewheel or dial doesn't make it Franken
But turning a a movement to hybrid with gen parts and then adding the other genuine stuff will make it Franken
Like this
Everything is genuine except the movement which is hyrvid VR3135 with gen parts

In reality, the term franken originated from vintage pieces that were built from scratch and genuine parts were added to it. The whole term is totally subjective and “urban” in the watch community. Anything with 1 or more MAIN pieces in the watch such as dial, insert, crystal or movement is and can be called a Franken period. It is not a modded watch is a franken with one genuine part or more.

really 1 main part on the head or multiple smaller parts being replaced makes it a franken in terms of the rep community.
if your dial or bezel assembly is gen, its a franken. if you did a combo of any of these (dw, hands, xtal, insert) its a franken.
adding a gen bracelet or strap doesnt make it a franken. Id also go as far to say adding a gen movement only wouldnt necessarily make it a franken, but why would someone only replace the movement?
In the gen world, anytime you change 1 part, even if you are changing it with another gen part, makes it a franken

Remember Frankenstein? He got his whole body sewed up from different parts.
I believe that’s how it should be. Different parts from gen into a watch = that’s franken.
It’s not like you sew up a finger and call that body “franken”.
