What do you think about "Wrapped gold?

I have about 50 reps in all stainless and thats my preference.

I have one "wrap" - a Noob wrap Sub I bought from Mary.

Its nice looking. From arms length I can't tell the difference between rep and gen.

Now, all that said... when I was selling Rolex we'd get in old "shell case" models that would literally be oozing green crap. Gold shell was over a base metal. So one could argue that if it looks like shit it just looks "gen".

I shouldn't have said that. Next thing you know, the guys here who "age" their dials will be adding green paint to the case to make it look right.

What have I done.

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up guys, I like bling my self, but if this is the case unfortunately then I'll have to do all of this on the silver DayDate only, I'll also get the yellow gold one and keep it as plain and maybe wear it with some icy gold rings, it's really surprising though since I remember seeing on another thread the actual gold wrap around the sstainless steel mid links of a Submariner and it seemed to be pretty thick

Yes that's what I would do if I were you. Just buy the YG wrapped wear it as is and just enjoy how amazing the gold color looks. Then if you want try the bling on a stainless model this way if something were to happen you wouldn't be out 1400 dollars.

The pics I've seen on the gen vs wrapped the gold color is spot on. Both the YG and RG

Yes the YG wrapped is spot on to gen . In fact I was recently in a drs office waiting room wearing my wrapped and a guy across from me was wearing a YG day date 36mm and there's was no noticeable difference at all in the color. I tried to get a pic but I didn't want to be too obvious about it lol.

I have my doubts about the RG wrapped though, in my opinion it looks a bit too pink.

Regarding your comment on the other thread where the guy said his wrapping faded just because he rubbed it, I'm sure he was scammed as wrapping isn't that easy to get rid off, was probably a cheap gold plated version

Yes I initially thought that as well but then I realized the plated version doesn't have wrapped sides at all so there would have been nothing to rub off in the 1st place. Its possible his bracelet may have been defective and wasn't wrapped correctly or something. Like I said I clean my watch very often and I don't have any issues.

With Wrapped gold you get a lot more gold than gold plate. Gold plate is usually around 5 microns ( If it is good) Wrapped is from 20 to 30 microns generally. It should last well enough in normal use. Most significant scratches on a watch won't be more than 5 microns in depth, so it will resist that.
Problem is it is still too light compared with a real solid gold watch.

A micron is 1000th of a millimeter.

Horological interest in the micron came about in 1844 when Antoine Le Coultre (JLC) invented the Millionometer. A mechanical measuring device capable of defining engineering tolerances of one micron. Quite an amazing achievement at the time which also marked the beginning of the use of metric measurement in watchmaking.

Reading on this link, they stated in the details that on the watch it's between 15-20 microns, while you said usually gold wrap is between 20 minimum to 30, do you think their numbers are accurate to the actual watch or is 15- 20 very thing and not good to go?

It is not possible to know what you will get, it is only possible to know what they tell you. With a wrapped watch you will not know what you have until too late, unless you want strip a part and examine it with some sophisticated gear.
This is why I buy precious metal watches only in gen.
I trust the Tds and I trust my own supplier, but they only tell you what they are told. Gold is expensive, I don't think anyone will give you more than they have to. This is not the consumer protected world where you can go running to some government busybody when your shit ain't right. it is a bit more real, ironically.

After I receive it I'm taking it to a jeweler friend of mine just to test and examine it properly, I will expose them if the wrap was too thin while they charge $1000+

Only reason I'm buying it is to give it a look similar to this one, Gold wrapped Day-Date is around $1300 + a custom Moisannite job is around $2000, do you think the diamonds would look better on the yellow gold one or should I do that on the silver Day-Date with the green anniversary dial? that one costs much less like around $400

Not sure how it is these days, but I have my fathers 1959 Omega 10k gold filled automatic. It has some pretty big gouges but you can't see the steel underneath. will show pics when I get home if you please...

Personally I would love to have some gold watches but I really can't trust any plating/wrapping in this kind of hobby provided by suspicious Chinese [emoji12]

just kidding, but I guess all the watches will look like shit after wearing it for a time due to sweat, water, sun etc.

Personally, I stick with two tone models and buy the gold parts aftermarket or gen in a official way like eBay, Chrono, trf because you have a chance to complain if you got ripped off...

Just my 2s

As long as you wipe it down regularly and don't beat the shit out of it it, should last you at minimun 5-10 years

Well, would be good to have a proof of that... but we both don't know [emoji53]

A gold watch is a different level to me. Don't know why but a stainless steel rep is different than a gold one to me regarding exposure in public.

I have a good salary and could afford a 30K watch when do some strict saving but everybody in my environment knows, that I never ever would spend that amount on a watch - on drugs and hookers maybe [emoji7][emoji13]

I would buy 3 watches instead [emoji56]

Also I don't want to care that much with everyday cleaning etc. and I'm sure it won't look the same year by year - even if the plating is still around.

Please don't get me wrong - I absolutely love gold watches (especially a golden day date with black onyx dial [emoji33]...pants dripping)

But imo you need the attitude too...and salary [emoji6]

There is a guy in my country that certifies diamonds and other gems, once I read at their blog (they have a laboratory) how they analyzed a Daytona gold wrapped with a gen movement, it was only possible to spot with RMN tests so, experienced people in the pre-owned watches bussiness, have difficulties verifying this pieces, It is also true that not many are able to keep paying "expensive" tests to certify their stuff's authenticity, my 2 cents.

The font on the day and date are WAY off IMO on the BP DayDate 228206 YG/YG 18K Wrap Gold Roman BP Swiss 2836: http://www.ttw-138.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_452&products_id=15989

QC picture check out the day font: http://www.qcpics.com/index.php/RDD0199/DSCN9434

Here is a gen 228206 so you can see for yourself:
View attachment 12600 View attachment 12601

How hard would it be to source a GEN dial, date/day wheel and xtel for the 228206?

Yes BPs day font is off we have known this for quite some time.

Unfortunately the gen day wheel won't fit bc the movements are completely different. You will also have same issue with the using a gen dial bc you would need to cut the feet just to get it to fit. The gen xstal is the only thing that is an easy fit.
