Dials are an important ingredient to a quality build. It's usually worth to spend 50% of the build on a good dial. At least that's in my limited experience [emoji23]

I believe that too. 50% on dial 50% movement - no money left for case hands insert assembly or service. Hahaha...oh yeah joys of vintage builds!

I think dials are the most important. I do know also the Dark lord it's the one to go for gilt dials. (Expensive though)

@NCRich haha sounds like every vintage Rolex I see on the bay! Always something is off - or sometimes they just look like they went through WWII and then a blender afterwards.

@jaspert - luckily I get my dial from the source and hand pick them. And that's also why I pay more for some dials than others. Different grades. I see the prints on the cheaper grade dials and its just not quite there. The example of my DRSD I posted above you can see how amazing crips the dial is. I had to go through a lot of dials to get that one.

Here's another tough one, a Milgauss 6541. Honeycomb gilt chapter ring. Red Milgauss faded to pink. Vintage lume to match gen hands. Every little detail makes the dial more and more expensive.

@TheSociety, man that's a beautiful Milgauss, hard to find a flaw one that one.
Just wondering if you would consider using your contacts with the uber- high-quality dial makers/printers/sellers to allow us mere mortals here on the forums to have a shot at buying those dials at your price-point and quality by purchasing thru you/your contacts, on this forum or another?

I know there has been a lot of contention lately with the focus on non-profiteering, price setting, and taking care of (or exploiting financially and insulting) our fellow members, esp. when dealing with these hard-to-source and/or high-end parts.
For this to be an honest-to-goodness community of avid watch enthusiasts, that see themselves as equals and comrades, don't you think everyone should have access to all parts for sale, vendors, and servicers, even those that are producing specialty dials, cases, etc in limited numbers?

I would hate to think a member who was lucky enough to secure a connection to a high-end suite of parts would think it acceptable to limit other member access in order to keep it to himself/herself.
I mean, if I stumbled across an exceptional parts supplier, I would certainly give my friends the hook-up on those sweet parts!

Anyway, just a thought!

Thanks

From what I've gathered:
MQ = Minh Quy = http://vintagewatchesmq.com/minhquy/index.php
HR = Helanarou = http://www.helenarou.com/index.html
Phong = www.jewelleryandwatch.com
DW = David Wong (no longer on the scene)
Dung_chrono on eBay (no items for sale)
Tonnywatches on eBay (no longer an 'active seller')

When I contacted MQ and Phong for 1680 dials they quoted me over $500. Where can I get them for $150-200?

You forgot vintagewatchmaker (Phong's son)
and there is some nice dials and parts from gan_antique on eBay.

As my own experience, gan_antique is tonny, when I buy the dial from this eBay shop, it comes with tonny name card.

Not all dial makers are the same for sure. There are definitely higher grade dial that costs $$$ more. Some comes aged for years (that's how they get natural patina). Why do I know this? Because I'm friends with 2 of the best dial makers [emoji4] and I have seen the dial plates first hand. In fact I'm making the prototype Daytona yatchmaster dial right now with . I have all the vector files and we are working on it (he's very old so he doesn't use illustrator etc).

It's expensive especially for 5-10 pieces run. To make the films and plates. Dials are very consuming to do right and this these techniques. So we are lucky that there are some decent quality being sold for $200-$350. If it was me I wouldn't be able to do it for that price.

And trust me when I say you can see a difference with a $750 dial. The prints are finer, crisper, better quality control - every detail is made as close to gen as possible - that's the different between 80% there or 95% there.

Things to note:

Most gen "refinished" dial means they're printed on metal singer signed plates - however, this most of the time means the plate has singer stamped on it - its not genuine.

The top grade stuff is printed on actual genuine plates - they sometmies use old datejust plates, etc. Now this might not make a difference but it's noted in the pricing. They also use genuine rolex coronets - my Milaguss and Daytona has this (usually taken from old datejust, etc) and that is about $100-$150 alone so it gets added to the price (and quality) of the dial.

I reckon for most people out there, 80% quality for $200-$350 is more than enough - but I also know some very OCD members (myself included) - we're hunting for the "best sub" lol

Bullshit.

Rolex dial coronets cost $20 a piece on Ebay.

'Ageing' dials for 2 years is the most laughable thing I've ever heard - utter fucking nonsense. You buy dials for $100 from the same suppliers as everybody else then try to pass them of as something worth $750.

And if you paid anymore than $150 for that DRSD Tiffany dial - call the cops, cuz you wuz robbed.

wasn't that the one you once offered? Or different maker?

Same dial - look at the 5 on 45, the 6 on 60, the trailing tail of the 2 on 12, the 9 , the off centre lines on the 6 o'clock marker and the 12 o'clock marker. . . . printed using the same pad, at the same printer - guaranteed.
