Using WU in UK is also an easy and painless process, much more so than CC or bank transfer. I guess the staff who use WU at our corner shops have more experience with the procedure!

Perhaps you just happened to be served by wrong guy, in the wrong place.
Aren't there others in your areas you could try?

In the UK it's very expensive and impossible on line. And like the OP, the UK WU places are all in very dubious areas.
I always use direct bank transfer, done on line with no issues and the banks normal commercial exchange rate with no markups...
