We have trusted dealers, what about a list of trusted repairers?

Why not? I know there are a lot of people on the board that work on their own watches or know a good place that's willing to work on reps...

I don't trust myself to fix a watch; I am not mechanically inclined and would probably get frustrated and break something if I tried to fix it.

+1, I like this idea, I know there are several people on the forum who can fix/repair and mod but a concise list would be great.

This has come up before, and it'll never fly because watchmakers don't want their name and the fact that they work on reps posted on the Internet, which is totally understandable.

This is why I'll never have a huge rep collection. Too much uncertainty whether the watches will hold up and if (and where) they can be repaired. I might scope out a local repair shop that will at least handle them.

My favorite local repairer won't touch them—not for any ethical reasons, but simply because he does not want to put any time into them.

There are many reps that are fine watches. It seems to me, that someone who claims to be a person of experience repairing automatic movement watches would be proud to be PAID to work on them.

At least in my field it works that way.

Is the money you pay to repair a gen and the money you pay to repair a rep different? I don't understand the mentality. If you are getting paid who cares what the watch is.

Mostly, watchsmiths don't want to get involved because it's illegal. And advertising that on a rep forum would potentially screw up their job. That is the mentality. My ws would dance mambo for me, but if I spread his personal data he will chew my ass. And I fully respect that.

Working on rep 'guys' watches is a lot more difficult than working on 'gen' guys watches.

A lot of them still see all reps as junk. They know you're not going to pay big $$ to repair what they see as a $10 watch, so they don't even want to 'waste' their time.

Illegal to sell, but it is not illegal to own and service them in the USA correct? I can understand your point though Fakemaster.

Repairing reps is not illegal in any part of the world, owning them is not illegal either.

Their "normal" work does not have to suffer, they can work under an alias...

My watch repair guy goes to great length to protect his identity. He now wears a disguise whenever working on watches and he calls himself Wotchthor.

However, the quality of his work hasn't been up to scratch recently.

Interesting thread, it would be great to have a list of repair guys. Plus I think demand is there. However, I do understand the risk involved.

Just an idea, do you think RWI could act as a hub? For example, RWI would be an intermediary.

Members that need repairs carried out could submit a request via RWI. RWI could then forward on to a willing repairer to review and either accept/reject the request. Obviously they would have to be trusted repairers as their identity would remain anonymous to the individual members.

Like I said, just an idea. Though, let me know what you think and if it’s possible.

Thanks

Members could help you too...it always depends on which country you're coming from...
So when someone needs some help, just post it in the adequat thread with the home country and I'm sure you will have an answer...

Thanks will do.

Does that also include mods, like sending your watch off to another member to mod it???

Well, this is a forum, not an intermediary. Just stick around, read up, ask questions, contribute, make friends, get to know people... and things will happen... you'll have access to the right people at the right time. It takes time, but that's what a network of people sharing a hobby is all about.
