Getting To Know The Place

I recently replaced my bezel assembly, which meant getting new gaskets installed. I went to a Rolex repair place (apparently, he was quite okay working on frankens).

I gotta say, he did a great job.

Tested down to 50 meters / 164 feet. The tester could've kept going, but I didn't want to chance blowing the crystal.

Always a scary thing to do, even knowing it'll be fine:

Hey some business is better than no business, eh?
Vac did a test a while back.
If I remember, most rep sub casings are good to 5-7 ATM.
Surprisingly, it was the planet ocean casing that made it to 10 ATM.

Is that second pic the tester? It looks like a regular glass of water :)

Cool receipt tho!!! I wish my tester spit out some report like that!

I honestly believe it's a superior case design and an all around better watch compared to the classic sub. The case is the foundation. Nonetheless, that is one great looking franken sub! Congrats yozers!

I don't see why a TC (gen construction) should be any more or less waterproof than a genuine sub?!

Different materials/expertise. You gotta overthink, Rolex has been doing this for quite a while. They might be on par with water in regular swimming / showering actions but sure as hell not when you dive. You'll need some serious extra work done then.

I would bet a stock TC with cleaned and greased gaskets/ seals will do as well as a gen sub with waterproofing...
A comparison test would be interesting as hell :)

My understanding of the seals is that the silicon grease helps to prevent the seals from binding up when used. So when you unscrew the crown and screw it back down, a dry seal will bind up against the metal and distort/deform. Where the greased seal will have enough lubrication to keep it from binding... it does little in the way of waterproofing beyond that. At least this is my understanding....

The OPs issue with the waterproof test is the crystal. Under pressure, the crystal deformed about 3.5 micrometers (0.0035 mm). I would guess the crystal is the weak point on the Submariner...
