EDIT: UPDATE!

I just received my 176G back from Vaccum!

1. I bought a 176G with asian movement from Ruby - she also swapped out the CG and Crown to a thicker one :) It was a steal at $139 EMS shipped!

2. I sent out the watch to Vaccum and he relumed, cannon-pin fixed, tightened the CG lever, & movement swap to a E series dagger movement (hybrid of Swiss & Asian from my 183). His work is truly amazing!! :)

Now, the pics :) Enjoy

Anoather Edit! Here is a pic of gen - for comparison:

1160032.jpg

Postives:

1. Whiter color numbers & markers - like Gen
2. Thicker TI crown (it has less # of teeths, but oh well)
3. Superlumed & No cannon pin issues!
4. Correct-looking movement

Negatives:

1. Wrong Caseback :( There is no G-series caseback available in reps
2. Crappy looking CG - It's actually flipped upside-down, I hope to swap it out someday.
3. "L Swiss L" is a bit too close to the "6" - for some reason, 176G has more spacing between L SWISS L and the 6 than 112G or 9B - so I guess gen doesn't use the same dial for it.

Thanks for reading :) Next up is 9B PVD! in probably a month or so.

Hi RWI,

Please hear my plan out and provide feedback on whether this is the wisest way to accomplish what I want :)

I. I own (or will have owned) the following watches by the time I am ready for this project(s):

1. 183H dial and case with Dagger (not needle) E (G?) movement (Swiss/Asian Hybrid) with Swan Neck
(The watch itself is not much value to me as I do not wear it and consider this sunk cost & I am using the movement for the project - please read further)
2. 176G from Ruby with Fat Crown with Asian G movement without Swan neck (Purchased for $139)
Total: 139 USD (from Ruby's 176G)

II Parts/watch I need additionally

1. DSN's PVD Case & Saphire Crystal Set - around $200 USD
2. Luminor Base Painted Marker Dial & Hands (will probably end up having to buy a watch) $110 USD
Total: $310

III. Services needed (probably from Vaccum)

1. Putting the E(G?) movement from 183 into 176G from Ruby
2. Take the dial, hands, movement from the additional base watch that I have to purchase into DSN's PVD case
3. Superlume & Cannon Pin Fix on 176G
4. Cannon Pin Fix on 9B (assuming no lume job needed due to being appropriate for a vintage PAM)
Total - Maybe 250-300 USD(? what do you guys think?)

IV. Parts I need to sell or get rid of

1. 183H Case, Dial, and Hands (case is pretty beat up) - ($30)
2. Additional G-series Base watch's case (new case) - ($20)
3. The Asian movement (brand new) that comes with the 176G - ($50)

Total - Maybe (100) USD - "( )" = negative from the Grand Total since I am selling the parts

V. The best part 8) - Ending up with the following:

1. 176 G with Fat TI Crown with E (G?) Series movement with Dagger Swan Neck with no cannon pin prob.
2. DSN PVD Cased 9B watch with no Cannon pin problem with more accurate dial - but with Asian movement. (9b is a closed back, so who gives?)

VI. The worst part :? - lose PAM 183 & out $650 for two watches.

What do you guys think? I think Trevor has a nice 9B dial (good dial & hands only - the rest is off) watch ... for $110 shipped Paypal. Also, please let me know if the $$$ I put next to each item seem reasonable.

Thank you so much in advance! sorry for such long post.

Joe

are you willing to spend the money and time? If yes, nothing wrong going ahead with it. My other alternative would be spending the extra money perhaps to get a new PAM instead?

what i can read in your detailed and precise posting....you have it figured out...and in your head a long time....let me tell you....you need to do it, no way around it ! you can also check Epoch and brand 9 for parts donors watches.....
or just find a sponsor ? I would love to see the outcome ! good luck with it !

Yeah, it'll be a year long project for me :) and just got my annual bonus ^^

Buying a new Pam doesn't serve my purposes, since I like certain parts from certain dealers...
I really want to have a near perfect 176G and 9B.

So, there is no loop hole you see from what I wrote, right?

Thanks Takashi!

Go for it Joe !

In the end it will be worth it, and you'll like your watches even more for all the effort and time you put in it.

...and of course - obligatory photos for the rest of us to see the 'fruits' of your creation :)

cheers,
babola

Would the 9B be a T dial in gen form? If so, that's the only problem I see with your project(s).

I heard that 9B is L SWISS L :D which is what got me thinking.
Supposedly, 4B is T dial. Here is a quote I found from TZ

"9B is rarer than the 1A and 4B

T dials are rarer than L dials, but the 1A design was used up to the D series (then changed to saphire back) and usually when the same design is used. Keeps the prices lower."

If I am reading between the lines correctly, 9B should be "L" dial.

You're right though that if 9B is supposed to be T dial, I am screwed  Could someone confirm this?

Thanks!

Joe

I found a pic of 009 with L Swiss L :)

But then I also see some with T dial too - pic below... must the A series or transitional model to B.

Thank you guys for the encouragement.

I decided to go ahead and do this project. It may take several months, but I am hoping that
I will end up with the best replicas of these two models!

(I had to buy a Blackberry Pearl for my wife, in order to get an approval from her ^^)

Hi JOEJOEJOE,

your second picture is a pre-A PAM009 with T-Swiss-T. The main difference are the fat tritium numbers (which should turn yellow by now) and a "flatter" 6 on the top of the 6 is a bit flatter, not that curvy.

Let me explain. 009 exists in a small batch of pre-A, A series and B series. pre-A only with fat tritium numbers and T-Swiss-T, A series always with T swiss T and tritium numbers and 2 screws buckle.
B series have both transitional T dials (from leftovers of A series) and tritium dial. Majority of B series are L dial, with luminova numbers.

Thank you so much for this information. So if I understand this correctly, gen 9B should still have good lume to this date, right? I heard Tritium is the one that only lasts about 3 years or so.

Joe.

Tritium should have more than 10 years since those pre-vendome back dated 1993 still have lume, though weaker on the dial.

Thanks!! I will leave the rep dial as is.

I just need to order the DSN case now :)

A Quick Update - All parts are either ready or in-transit

As promised, here is a quick update for y'all~

I purchased the following parts/watches:

1. 009 dial (had to buy the whole watch) from Trevor - Great guy with great service
IMG_4238.jpg

$115 USD

2. 176G with THICK TI crown from Ruby - so helpful and devoted
No Pic yet - in transit - however, I understand that there is no rep caseback for G-series... so it's going to say H on it. I am planning to scratch out the serial numbers.
$139 USD

3. PVD Caseset from DSN - so far so good. He sent me tracking # within 3 days of purchase
No Pic yet - in transit
$184 USD (170 + 14 WU fee)

*** I have some additional questions though - experts, please help me out ;)

1. Is gen 009B supposed to have A/R?

2. When you purchase a gen watch from a non-AD, they scratch out the serial numbers (right?) Do they do this on PAMs too? If so, how would I go about achieving this effect? I hope Vaccum knows how.

3. For those of you who have base "L SWISS L" dials, do your dials have a 3-D effect on the "LUMINOR" and "PANERAI"? I was comparing the dial from Trevor and my 111 from Ruby and they're quite different. Ruby's has a bit of shine and it sticks out (very little) from the dial, while Trevor's 009 dial looks just printed on. Please let me know if my dial is good.

Thank you for reading ^^

Nice project Joe !

1) No A/R on any A or B series...Panerai introduced A/R on their C series from 2000 onwards - so you're safe, the PVD rep you've got doesn't have one either.

2) They never ever do that on gen Panerai watches, being ADs or non-ADs.

3) You're correct. Dial txt on sandwich reps seem to have slight 3D effect. I've got number of old reps with 'sausage' dials and although dial txt on those still has some 3D raised effect, it's not even near the 111H for example. Don't forget the sandwich dial txt on 111/177H is actually much larger even on gen, so the overal 3D effect is more accentuated.

cheers,
babola

Thanks again ^^ I think DSN's PVD case comes with A/R coating - I should swap it out or have the A/R peeled - not sure if this is possible. But you know though, Gen Pam 036 came with A/R and it's from 98 (B series I believe). Regarding the case #s, ah hell, I will have to live with it :x
