I'll support a group buy on a U-boat, but the problem will come with the model selection.

I am interested in the Flightdeck range.

I've only found one AD in London and the sales guy there told me, in confidence, so don't trell anyone

that they haven't sold any since he's been there (he didn't tell me exactly how long that was).

The main complaint seems to be that it looks fantastic, but isn't practical!!

Rob

I read an article recently about collecting watches in English Esquire magazine, and the writer spoke to a London dealer who said that footballer David Beckham was very influential in watch fashions, and whenever he brought a new watch, then you could expect an 18 monh spike in sales for that brand and model in the UK afterwards.

This was apparently true with the Rolex Yachtmaster his wife gave him, then Jacob & Co who he endorsed, Pam 217 Destro and then U-boat.

It may be that U-boat has had it's day as a fashionable item.

The writer also stated that he believed the big watch trend was also fashion driven at the moment, and that he expected collectors would not support a market for big watches in the future once the fashion changed.

Not sure I agree with that part. I think Panerai is pretty well established!

It's not just David Beckham, A big influence is also the Black Music scene, apparently Snoop Dogg is meant to have one of the best watch collections in the world!

You say Panerai are well established but in the UK they are hardly known, the same with Bell & Ross. The only AD for B&R is Harrods which is not really a store selling to Londoners!! :D And tThere isn't a high street AD for Panerai at all :(

The only other PAM I've seen was last week in a restauarant in Canary Wharf and it was also a rep, but a really cheap one :D

If you asked most Brits the name of a 'prestigious' watch most would say Rolex. Many I know would say Swatch :D

He's more of a 'Hollywood Brit' though isn't he??

Most Brits are not so easily led by films stars, and most are appalled by how much the average football player gets paid, so they almost act as a repellant! (most have no style, just money!)

But if some of the 'Soap' stars started wearing Panerai

One brand that seems to be sneeking in at the moment is Skagen, I know they are not 'prestigious' but suddenly seem to be everywhere :D

U-boat knockoffs are showing up. Do a Google search for TW Steel watches. They have knocked off the case and used a different name. I will start a new thread with some links for the knockoff. It does use a quartz movement, but the case is a good starting point. I think we should start to get serious about trying to put together a group buy and get this project going!

Here's the new thread:

This AD has now paid off its AD Status(!) and has returned all watches as they hadn't sold any since taking on the dealership. They are in the heart of Soho and have no problem shifting large quantites of everything else!

BIG and LEFTY how can it not be a great watch! I've been waiting for a rep of this for some time. They are a little pricey considering the quality of the guts, but hey that would be true of a lot of Gens. Very interesting history, kind of a Panerai (competitor?) that never developed, brought back to life for the modern era.

Here's the link: http://www.u-boatwatch.it/en/index.html
