All I can say is that my 42" plasma blows my brother inlaw's brand new Bravia away. I haven't said a word but every family member has told me that my Plasma is better. His family is ready to kick him out for spending the extra cash for a "quality" set. I think LCD sucks compared to plasma. Fast motion sports is burred and pixelated. LCD color looks too saturated. blacks are too black. I'm not trying to justify my purchase, I made my decision a long time ago when there was no comparison. Every time I look at the newest TVs, I make the comparison but still haven't seen anything close to plasma. I'm not alone either. Other colleagues with plasmas feel the same as I do.

Take a look at the Sony KDL40XBR2 or 3 and the KDL46XBR2 or 3 and get back to me.....they have the Plasmas beat.....I have them side by side in my store on a HDTV 1080i Generator......there is a difference.....they are the best TV's ever produced....even the Toshiba Cinema Series 42" and 47" 1080p sets beat the Plasmas....last year the Plasma was the best.....not now.....Plasma TV will disappear when they turn off the analog signal.... IMHO :D :D :D

Thanks for all of the advice everyone! I'm buying the TV for when I finish building my house in the middle of January so I still have a little time left. After reading every post and a little more research I like thie one!

if it's not too late have them run the wireing and cables in the wall and put a 2x12 between the wall studs to mount the tv on and the wireing will be behind it. i had that done in my upstairs living room. the tv will be on the wall like a picture with no wires showing.

Thanks for the advice, the electrician said he was going to do something like that when I told him the type of TV I was shopping for. He tried to convince me to put the TV behind a retractable panel above the fireplace.... That just wasn't for me.

Good choice, in my books, That is what I would buy if I was buying a LCD today. But everyone will have a different opinion. Just like here, who has the best sub.

Hopefully all that info from the avsforum didn't overload your mind. You will also find info for building, lighting and wiring and if you are really into it, a great home theater setup too. Hk is right, if you are building from scratch, prewiring would be a good idea and better if you put a conduit in, so if you forgot something or want to put other types of cables in later it will be easy to fish it through. You may not want to prewire DVI or HDMI cables right now, as they can be a bit pricey if you don't know what you want. You don't have to spend big to get big results.

Be careful of the TV over the fireplace. You can overheat the set, you should check the temperature where you want to mount before you place the tv there. and don't forget about the soot from the smoke if you burn real wood. It may shorten the life of the set. They are rated at 60,000 hours for half brightness. Which is alot. But much much more shorter in a hot environment. You could be frying it.

I had them put one in. The electrician offered to put speaker wire in but I figure it would be better if I knew exactly what was being used, plus I wasn't ready to decide exactly where everything was going.

i forgot about the conduit, i have it running in that wall and into a centrely located closet upstairs for all of the equipment complete with ac vents and other vents to let the heat escape. all cableing for sat tv, sat wireless computer router and telephone cat 5 cable junction boxes are there. everything can be controled and changed from there.

Even then, they make no sense for movies as you only need 1080p24, which any 1080i60 TV can do with inverse telecine.

Remember, kids. Movies are filmed at 24fps. You never need higher frame-rates than 24fps for Lord Of The Rings or Serenity.

Or "Malibu Ass Blasters".

I just picked up a 46" Aquos (SHARP LC-46D62U) with 1080p from Best Buy for under 2200.00 bucks. I use it as a tv and a computer monitor, it has a computer resolution of 1920x1200...very sweet ! If your looking for LCD check out the Aquos or the new 1080p samsung (Samsung LN-S4696D)...side by side with the Sony Xbr's the picture looks as good and it costs a lot less.

for plasma check out the pioneer (PIONEER PDP-5070HD) it has a lot of excellent reviews.

Malibu Ass Blasters, or any other film in that, uh ... genre is most likely filmed in HDV (1440x1080) at 60fps Interlaced, so you'd need 1080i60 for that. :D

Yes, but what's the pricetag? Any of the LCDs in the $1500 - $2500 price range do not hold a candle to the HD plasmas in my opinion. I did see a set at the Sony store that was quite decent, but I believe it was in the $6000 range? I believe that in the long run plasma sets will be more durable. In fact, even though Sony has stopped producing plasma for consumers, I believe they are still producing them for business and industry clients. Why?

Currently, you don't buy a Plasma; you rent one. When Plasmas promise to retain their image quality for a full five years with no drop-off in quality, I may be interested, but by then LCDs will be handing them their arses on a fine silver plate.

Plasmas are the set of choice in virtually every airport, shopping center, bus station, etc. These sets are on 24/7 and after years of use I see only minor brightness loss. Remember, these sets are on constantly. I have heard the argument that LCD backlights can be replaced, but at what cost? The price of these sets are dropping, and in 5 years is the cost of the backlight going to exceed the cost of a new set?

Its all new technology my friend, and the outcome won't be known for a number of years. By then the replacement cost will be so low that the point will be mute.

I have to say that everyone who comes into my home passes comment on the picture quality of the Samsung plasma i have compared to any set they have seen. I am no techy, and i put absolutely zero research into buying this set so i am not patting myself on the back for being a shrewd buyer....I liked the look of the set in the store and that was it. When i got it installed in the home i was blown away by the quality of picture, i would recommend the Samsung HD 42" to anyone. Wanmadtim

50" Plasma Full HD (1080p) is very expensive... How would I know why... I don't need this luxury yet

Ok... If you decided to go for projectors (front), I won't hesitate to recommend Optoma. Good value for money and it delivers excellent performance but you need long throw for this one. If you are in LCD camp, go for Sanyo PLV-Z5 (this one really rocks). Get very good screen such as Stewart (perhaps not the best value for money but the performance is there... or at least get something pearlscene coated).
Damn... after done with my schools, I am going to take THX Certified Technician class.

EDIT: If you're in high end camp, get those Marantz or Barco or Christie.
