In the late 90s when I worked in lower Manhattan I was approached by a guy on the street who wanted to sell me a TT sub. It was in a Rolex box, he had a receipt from Barthman Jewelers (the AD for the Wall St. area.) It all LOOKED legit. In the box the watch looked gorgeous it had what looked like all the right stuff. Although at that point I had already owned three new Rolex, I was far from what you would call an expert at identifying reps.
He gave me some BS about why he had to sell it a huge loss, showing me the receipt which was for several thousand dollars - yeah I knew even then a TT sub should have been over 5, but as I said - I'm no expert. In fact I was kinda complimented that this guy thought I looked like the kind of mark that would make his day. Maybe it was the TT DJ on my wrist?
He started out at 1500, but soon he was down to around 9. I was just playing, as even if it was real (which to be honest it sure looked real to me) I did not have 900 discretionary spending dollars. Besides I'm gonna buy a 900 dollar watch from some guy on the street??
I knew that this guy was a scammer but was fascinated by the scam.
Now if somebody did buy it, and I'm sure somebody would, they thought they got the deal of the century, a $5000+ watch for less than a grand.
With the box, papers tags and all the stuff why would they thought it was fake?
Until one day they walk into an AD...
