Thinking of selling my gens....what do you think?

I've had my Seamaster Pro GMT for about 12 years now. For a long time I wore it every single day until it needed a cleaning and then went into a drawer for a few years. Now that I have had it fully serviced, it's just not getting wrist time as I'd rather wear my SSD or TC 16610LV or some other new acquisition.

The other motivating factor is that Seamaster is now worth around $1800+ (per ebay sales). I also have about $800 tied up in some vintage gens that I never wear. The thought is to free up that money.

It's kind of sad though. It was my first high end watch and it was a splurge because I had a great paying job in a new career at the time. I do enjoy wearing it when I put it on. The bracelet feels absolutely luxurious compared to any Rolex bracelet.

In my heart though I think I might be more of a Rolex guy and I also wonder if the GMT was ever my favorite Omega. At the time, I thought the blue Bond Seamaster was too common place and the black GMT looked classy. I still feel that way with regards to those two watches but I'm also being seduced by the 5th gen Planet Ocean. Maybe I should get the PO first to see if that feels like an adequate replacement for my GMT.

And it's not like I'll never be able to buy a gen again. My wife will be a doctor in a few years and with our combined income I know I'll be able to buy another gen or two though now knowing what I know about high end reps, I'm not sure I could spend $5K on a Sub when I can get a spot-on WM9/TC for around $600-700 with a swiss movement.

I have been pondering selling my GENS too; however, I figured that I am in no real need for the money, so I think I will pass them on to my sons (then they can sell them).

I said that to say, if you can use the money now, sell them - you can always buy another one, but if it is not a real money issue, keep them, you never know what may happen...

Im going the opposite way, I just got my AP Diver V3 and it is a true super rep, absolutely stunning, so stunning that its made me start planning to buy the gen, and believe me that takes a bit of planning.

It comes to your sentimental value on the watch. It was your first high end gen watch and that can never be changed and replaced. In 5 years time would you like to look back at the watch and ponder where you first started vs. where you are now?

Some people don't like looking back to the past whereas some people like to have these moments. It depends on you.

Unless you have a need for money right now then there's no rush. Take your time, think about it and then decide to keep or sell the gen.

I wouldn't sell a vauled gen to get a rep. The gen you have is very well made and can't be compared to even the best rep, keep it I think you'll be more pleased in the long run.

don't think it would be a good idea to sell a gen watch that has been part of your life quite a while and buy reps. you admitted yourself :it's kind fo sad. rely on your 1st feeling:)

I sold all but two of my reps to fund the purchase of gens.

Never regretted it. Reps became a pain in my a$$.

Do what you feel like doing. What we think/feel about our watches should be of no real consequence to you, regardless.

Keep the gen bud. Not being rude but you've had it a long time, you just got it serviced.
Its not a million dollar watch. $1800 isn't enough to change your life. Keep it. You'll regret selling it one day if you do.

I wish I would have kept my GMT 2 C that I bought in 2008 & sold it months down the road because I was working in a restaurant & always had my hands over hot pans & grills. Im the kind of guy that wears a watch every day no matter if it cost $50 or $5,000.......point of my rant is Rolex prices went up about 20% since 2009, grr............:frusty:

I didnt need the money & the PCL after a while was starting to turn me off, kind of too much bling if you will & since I have OCD when it comes to expensive watches, I would freak out if I bumped it or scratched it in some way............hence the sale of all 3 gens & now im here buying as close to gen reps as possible & it wont bother me if I lay a scratch or 2 on them.

Of course I wont beat them up & now I dont work over a hot stove or grill, they are kept in great shape.

Get rid of it. It's just a watch, not a family member! in my experience I have found that whenever I have entertained selling a watch, in the end, sooner or later, I got rid of it. If you don't wear it and don't really like it all that much, flip it and get something else.

After finding RWI. I sold off my GEN Tags and Breitlings. Took the money and put together a nice rep collection. It is a no brainer.

I am keeping my gens as heirlooms for my two boys. Two PAMs a Planet Ocean and an IWC. I'm never selling them.

Reps were exciting for a while, but I always know they are not the real deal. So I only kept a few really nice ones, or ones I just really liked, and will mostly be expanding the gen collection in the future - though much more slowly. There's just nothing like the solid quality feel and confidence that it will keep running, not leak water, and not get you called out (I know it almost never happens).
Recently a friend came to visit with some of her friends we did not know. One guy was a real watch guy - wore a GMT2 (definitely gen) and had a Breitling SO and a DJ1. We talked watches a bit (I was wearing a gen Oris which started the conversation) and he knew his stuff. My wife invited him up to see my watch boxes. I panicked! Most are gen, but there's a few reps in there. I was pretty sure the WM9 Sub and the WM9/BK TT Sub and the DSN089 would pass muster, but what about the IWC3717 with poor AR? What about the Fakey SMP beater?
Luckily he fixated on my vintage stuff - the Wakmann Triple Dates and a converted pocket watch from the 1920s with a porcelein dial.
But the fact is that gens are "worry free". And I like that better.

But let me know if you want to unload that old, beat up gen of yours. Just think of all the brand new, pretty reps you could buy with an extra $1500! :)

I will definitely sell off my gen TAGs and Montblancs, especially since I accumulated them when I was barely out of high school (doing some questionable jobs); I realize that the reps I have compared to the gens barely have any faults at all, and I don't have to worry about banging the crap out of em...and I could use some extra spending money. It's ridiculous how accurate these reps are nowadays; I have an Aquaracer chrono (both rep and gen) and the only fault is that the 10 on the bezel is slightly a bit more crooked on the rep, but it's crooked on the gen too!

In your case I would say definitely sell it if it has no value to you, sentimental or otherwise.
Gens are gens but they are still just watches at the end of the day, if it is just stuck in a drawer and you don't like it anymore and it doesn't bring back any happy memories when you put it on...get rid of it. ...and get something you do like!

On the other hand, if there is even a hint you might regret selling then don't do it!
I have 6 gen omegas, I like them but wouldn't hesitate to get rid of 5 of them if push came to shove....all except for the speedy, you'd have to extract that from my cold dead wrist :D

I agree with rooster that if you don't want it anymore and are feeling something else... Sell it. But make sure that is what you want to do!

I would probably sell it to help fund a gen, not buy more reps though.

I'm with tommy on that... He has a couple reps left and I have... Zero. I plan on a build later but I burnt myself out quick in this hobby, I needed a change.

If you don't need the money I say keep it. I would sell a gen to fund another gen, but not reps.
